Random takeaways from editing Top 10 Horror Movie Monsters:

10 - Bioraptor - Did it feel weird downloading a sex scene at work? You betcha.

9 - Krampus - Both happy and confused about the inclusion of Krampus.

    8 - Sharktopus - Wow.

7 - Pinhead - Combing through these movies made me feel sick to my stomach for real. They should call it Foodraiser. Get it? Like I'm throwing up.

6 - Babadook - Need to see it.

5 - Freddy - Oh yeah, Johnny Depp.

4 - IT - Need to see IT.

3 - The Thing - Love this movie. Although, is it the exact same movie as Alien?

2 - Jason - More like Jason BOREhees.

1 - Alien - So gross and scary!!

11 - Cabin in the Woods - Looove this movie.

    jack I Like Lego

    Aloha folks!

It is my favorite time of year... Extra Life time! This year we are leading the charge into a MILLION DOLLAR GOAL.  That's right, we are looking to raise over $1,000,000 for the kids during our Extra Life streams this year.  Last year we topped out around $940,000 and I know in my heart that our amazing community can surpass that mark.

We kick off the entire thing THIS WEEKEND with our epic Extra Life Community Stream! We'll be showcasing some amazing talent from the RT Community all over the planet!  These teams will be streaming all day, and we'll be shining a spotlight on them, one hour at a time.  So, join myself, Caiti, and Chelsea as we take a look at 25 (!) groups in the Rooster Teeth community and support them as they raise money for Team Rooster Teeth and their Children's Miracle Network Hospitals of choice!

And then, the next week, starting at 8am CST on November 11th, it is back.  The Rooster Teeth Extra Life 2017 Stream kicks off and doesn't stop for a full day.

The schedule is PACKED this year with tons of your favorite Rooster Teeth family members, shenanigans, games, a brand new WHEEL OF VENGEANCE, and lots of other legally and morally questionable shenanigans.

Seriously, the schedule is bursting at the seems.  I'm working on it now and I cannot wait to see what all the different groups bring to the table.

Our line up of raffle giveaways is going to be pretty crazy as well.  We're still working on the final lineup of stuff you'll have a chance to win, but it's looking incredible.  You'll have chances to win RTX VIP tickets, seeing a podcast recorded LIVE, some impossible to purchase Lazer Team 2 gear, and even a piece of furniture... you'll see.

Not only that, but every single year we have some awesome exclusive Extra Life merchandise, this year is no different.  This weekend we'll be putting up for sale our brand new Extra Life t-shirt (available in unisex and female cuts) as well as our single FOR THE KIDS pin! Proceeds from the sales of this merchandise goes to the Rooster Teeth donation to Extra Life!

And then the next weekend we'll put the shirts back up for sale as well as the exclusive Rooster Teeth Gym Badge pin set and the most incredible Rooster Teeth Land poster.  Same deal as before, we do not profit off the sale of these pieces! The proceeds go to our Extra Life donation!

These pieces will only be available during Extra Life and once we shut down the stream they are no longer available!  So get a bunch for yourself and friends!

The exclusive poster this year is absolutely incredible.  It's packed with details and Easter eggs galore.  I can't wait for you to see it.  We'll have higher resolution looks at it soon.

Of course, with all of this comes the stretch goals. I won't tell you all of them yet, but I'll let you know one.

After listening to feedback and all over the net, us here at Achievement Hunter have decided if we hit $1,000,000 during our stream we will bring forth ACHIEVEMENT HUNTER: THE MUSICAL.

    That's right.

I hope we hit our goal.  I want to make this thing.  Jeremy and I are already coming up with ideas.

So, that just about does it for now.  We'll have more information coming very soon including links and everything you'll need to watch the stream this weekend and next.

If you would like to donate right now or join our Extra Life team, you can do so right here:

We can't wait to get started.  This is going to be a very special event for us and we hope you'll be a part of it.  See y'all this weekend for our Community Stream!

    Love you!

  • An Introduction

Greetings and salutations, people of Rooster Teeth! My name is Eric Vespe and I'm a new member of the RT family. I'll be joining the awesome people at The Know and will be bringing a lifetime of movie geekery with me.

My very first memory in life is a horror movie scene. I'm not talking about my first movie memory, mind you, but my first memory period. I must have been about 3 years old when I woke up in the lap of my babysitter. The room was dark and I was awakened by the sound of JoBeth Williams screaming for Craig T. Nelson's help. My eyes opened to see a coffin rise up out of the ground, the door flying open and a grody skeleton appearing. My babysitter was, of course, watching Poltergeist probably right around the time it debuted on HBO.

    That was my first memory.

Poltergeist in some weird way started me on a path I've been walking ever since. I've been fascinated by movies as long as I can remember... the varied stories they tell, how they are made and how they impact our culture.

I wore out VHS tapes, memorized whole movies, large sections of which still take up (probably too much) brain space. I argued the benefits of the wider letterbox format with my mom, who just couldn't understand why I wanted a smaller image. I rode my bike a mile to the nearest cinema just about every day over the summer, seeing whatever was playing, even if I had already seen it three or four times already.

In short, I'm obsessed with this art form and that obsession hasn't lessened over time. If anything it's grown deeper.

When I was a freshman in high school I went to a George Carlin stand up show and somehow talked Carlin's manager into setting up a phone interview with me and ol' George for my high school newspaper. The fact that I wasn't actually old enough to be writing for my high school newspaper didn't stop me from pursuing that and sure enough I spoke with one of the most legendary comedians of all time and published it in Bowie High School's newspaper, The Lone Star Dispatch. My first byline at the age of 14.

At the age of 16 I ended up a part of the Ain't It Cool News team just as that site took Hollywood by the throat. It was the wild wild west days of the internet and AICN was at the forefront of geek culture. I took the nom de plume “Quint” after my favorite character from my favorite movie (Robert Shaw's Quint from Jaws) and proceeded to live out my nerdy version of Almost Famous, interviewing actors and directors, visiting movie sets and developing my critical voice on the fly.

Over the years I've gotten to meet most of my idols, from Steven Spielberg to Stephen King, and I've seen movie history unfold before my very eyes. I was there when Sam carried Frodo up the slope of Mount Doom. I walked through the caves where Tony Stark would build his first set of armor. I was in the director's tent when Tom Cruise looked on in horror as his son ran towards the battle between the army and the invading Martians.

I've seen all those things, yet that insight hasn't diluted the mystery of cinema for me one bit. I get just as excited for a new Star Wars trailer as I did when I was growing up.

The '80s was a great time to grow up a movie geek, but it pales in comparison to the world we're living in now. Every year we get multiple superhero movies. There's a brand new Star Wars movie single year. Geeks have taken over pop culture. This is our time.

In the coming weeks and months you'll see entertainment coverage grow at The Know, both in the written form and in video form. You'll be getting in-depth set visit reports, interviews with actors and filmmakers, reviews and rambling rumblings from yours truly as well as some bigger ideas that I've been kicking around with Ashley and the rest of the awesome people at The Know.

I'm incredibly excited to join this community and I look forward to getting to know many of you and hearing your feedback.

    Oh, and Happy Halloween!

  • Welcome Eric Vespe to The Know

    Ashley The Know

Since launching The Know I've had the privilege of working with a number of talented writing voices. Coming in to the office every day to digest and debate through the events of the video game world is like coming home.

Today, I'm lucky enough to be able to add another name to that list (and one I've had my eye on for a long time): Eric Vespe, known to many in the entertainment world as Quint. Eric, formerly of Ain't It Cool? News, has been one of the foremost writers in the entertainment space for 20 years, and has agreed to join on with The Know to lead the charge deeper into movie and entertainment coverage for us.

This is really huge for us and we're lucky to have him. I like movies. Most of us do, really. But when I see how passionate Eric is for the medium, and just how much he knows about every element of every genre, I realize just how much I have to learn. His enthusiasm is infectious and makes learning more about movies FUN, which is exactly what we need.

Over the next few weeks you'll start to see Eric's work appear on the website and in videos. We're also going to be working together to develop new content that takes advantage of Eric's unique strengths, and I can't wait for you all to see it.

Until then, please welcome Eric to the family!

What if this week we took a happily married couple who just had a baby together less than 6 months ago and we separated them and had them fight each other? What if?

    • Finish the sentence: How to...?
    • Feel free to submit more than one idea.

    • Come up with a category for the guests to list off possible answers for (i.e. Things not to say after someone says "I love you" for the first time.)
    • Category with a lot of possibilities for answers are the best.

COME AGAIN? You give me a prompt for a scene and I make them act it out. This week I'm looking for prompts involving:

    • Things that normally DON'T happen at a strip club.
    • What happens when you find a Genie and things go wrong.
    • The missing Shakespearean play for the modern millenial.

BONUS GAME: BECAUSE I SAID SO... This is a new one. All I need is:

    • Questions kids might ask an adult
    • Don't get caught up on the standards, get creative

I want to say thanks for everyone tuning in live for the show. In my opinion, that's the real way to watch the show and it seems a lot of you think so too. xoxo The Risemonger

    Chelsea RT Community Manager

    Hey everyone!

It’s been a crazy couple of weeks since the RWBY: Combat Ready Kickstarter Campaign launched on September 27th. Thanks to all the Backers and vocal supporters, the game and campaign have taken off faster than we could imagine.

It’s only been 30 days, but the game has changed drastically since launch due to the unlocking of Stretch Goals. Those unlocked goals offered game component upgrades, additional content in the game, or additional content to be purchased!

For those of you who haven’t been following along (or those who have but really want to know what you’re getting... ) here is a brief “The Road So Far” of RWBY: Combat Ready.

September 27: RWBY: Combat Ready was launched!

September 29: We clarified that shipping is INCLUDED for people who live in the USA, EU, AU, or NZ!

    September 30: We’re funded!  fireworks

After being funded, it becomes a whirlwind of updates nearly every day as we started unlocking items. Here’s the quick low down with some links to their specific updates (as necessary).

Add-On Items Available to Add To Your Pledge (Here’s How you do it!)

    • Villain Miniatures for USD$20.00 (Includes a 30mm tall mini of Cinder, Adam, and Torchwick - Collectible Items Only, Not Integral to Gameplay)

    • Additional Copies of the Game for USD$45.00 (Each additional copy purchased through the Kickstarter will have all the Backer Included Items)

    • Emerald and Mercury’s Sub Boss Deck for USD$10.00 (Includes an 18 card deck and 1 objective card)

    • RWBY Starter Pack #1 for USD$60.00 (Includes the first four volumes of RWBY on either Blu-Ray or DVD.)

    • RWBY Starter Pack #2 for USD$40.00 (Includes the first four soundtrack CDs of RWBY)

    • New RWBY Character for USD$10.00 (An unknown new RWBY Character that will be premiering in RWBY: Combat Ready before they appear in the show, RWBY!)

    Developer Updates Explaining the Game:

#1 - Objectives and How They Work

    #2 - Card Play

    #3 - Combos and Assists

    #4 - Experience

I know, a lot of information to take in at once. Take a deep breath. Take a look. RWBY: Combat Ready has grown drastically since we launched it only 30 days ago. We’ve got just about four days left in the campaign so now is the time if you have interest.

We’re expected to ship this game to Backers in July 2018 and then ideally it will go into the RT Store after the Backers have it in their hands. But remember - there are certain items here that Backers have included for their pledges that will be separate items when it's in the Store!

We hope you’re as excited as we are to get our hands on it and play it with our friends!

  • Lazer Team 2 Is Coming to Theaters!

One of the best times I’ve ever had a Rooster Teeth was getting to watch our first movie, Lazer Team, in theaters with all of you. After all, it wouldn’t have been made without the support of the community, and being able to watch it on the big screen together was an unforgettable experience.

That’s why we’re super excited to announce that Lazer Team 2 will be coming to theaters in November, and tickets will be on sale tomorrow!

Lazer Team 2 screenings start the week of November 13 across the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, and begin November 19 in the UK. You and your boot group won’t want to miss this, so get ready to pick up some tickets before they sell out. Maybe I’ll see you there!

Keep an eye on the site and on Rooster Teeth’s social media tomorrow for more details, including links to buy tickets. And don’t forget, Lazer Team 2 will be coming to YouTube Red on November 22!

Update on 10/27: Check out Daniel's Journal for ticketing links!

Another fun one to edit! Here are some random takeaways:

    - The Blade movies look awesome. But are they? Either way I should rewatch them.

    - #8 has to be an all time favorite Top 10 entry.

    - I also definitely need to rewatch Buffy.

    - Alucard seems like a super lazy name for a vampire.

    - Have I ever actually eaten count chocula cereal? I don't think so.

    - Finally, this Top 10 gets me one step closer to squeezing in clips and references from all of my favorite sitcoms.

Glad you guys liked my four dads. They are good dads. It's looking like next week's episode is going to be filled with some ladies. Help me come up with some games for them:

    • Submit the opening line to a short story that guests can complete as a team
    • Ex: One day, a small boy was walking in the woods and happened upon a magic talking rock...
    • Keep the prompt short but details will make it better

    • Go to and find a word or phrase for guests to guess a definition for.
    • Pro tip: try and find words/phrases that are not just weird sex position descriptions.

    • Come up with a 2 person scenario where the characters interact with each other a lot.
    • Be as descriptive as you want, this is a scene the guests have to play out.
    • Scenes that work best for this game have a high potential for rapid dialogue and confrontation.

We just need a scene for this one to get started so please submit suggestions for:

    • Unique problems at odd places to have a job.
    • Conversations only had in the after-life.

    Stab RT Broadcast

I've seen this question a lot since we launched Theater Mode, so I'm making a journal post to answer everyone's question: How do I get [insert name of film] in Theater Mode? The truth is, we can't. Licensing a film for world wide distribution is very, very expensive. So no Jaws, no Mars Attacks and no Pixels (as much as that last one would be awesome). What we can do is license select films from our friends at Troma Entertainment and Gravitas Ventures for future productions. Films like Father's Day, Future World, Night Beast, and Psycho Sleepover all come from them. So if you know films that are distributed by our friends and really want to see them, post a reply here and we'll take a look.

    Hey, everyone!

We’ve been working on something that you all have been asking to come back for a long time. You know what that is?

PayPal is once again a valid method of payment for Rooster Teeth FIRST and Double Gold members!

To help ease the transition to us accepting PayPal, here is a brief FAQ addressing some of the most common questions.

Q: I’m currently on PayPal with the old grandfathered rate. Does this change anything with my subscription?

A: Nothing with your subscription will change as long as you stay on your current plan and do not cancel. (Remember, if your account lapses for any reason, you will NOT be able to re-subscribe with the grandfathered rate.)

Q: If I’m paying with PayPal and I have an issue with my account, who do I contact for help?

A: Email for all your customer care needs.

Q: I’m currently already paying through another method but I want to switch to PayPal. How do I do that?

A: You’ll need to cancel your plan and wait for the time to expire. You can then sign up using PayPal.

Q: Can I pay with PayPal without creating a PayPal account (i.e., using a PayPal guest account)?

A: Nope. You have to use a “real” PayPal account. It helps cut down on fraud. Are you a fraudster?

If you have any other questions, leave ‘em in the comments section.

This season has been a lot of fun already and we're only a few episodes in. We're gonna do something extra strange next week. It's either my dumbest idea yet or my greatest. Or Both. So with that in mind, help me make it even dumber/greater.

COME AGAIN? You give me a prompt for a scene and I make them act it out. This week I'm looking for prompts involving:

    • Deleted scenes from Star Trek The Next Generation that didn't make it past the censor.
    • Something strange that neighbors would argue about.

    • Find an odd story from the recent news with an equally odd headline that we can remove a word or two from for the the guests to fill in the blank.
    • Look for headlines where a blank space would leave the story open to a lot of different interpretations. Ambiguity is key.

JUST A QUICKIE! What always makes a joke better? Making it shorter. And shorter. And shorter. I need prompts for a scene:

    • Arguments that happen behind the scenes of the makers of the Muppets.
    • What happens when two monster movie characters collide...

We just need a scene for this one to get started so please submit suggestions for:

    • Brainstorming sessions at Nintendo on what to do next
    • Unusual conversations overheard at the retired living center.
  • We Want Your Fan Projects! Here’s What’s OK and What’s Not.

    ebregman Programming/Distribution

RWBY is a mere three days away on FIRST! Just a reminder, Volume 5 Chapter 1 premieres Saturday at 10am for FIRST Members, and then on Tuesday 10/17 at 10a CT it’s free to watch for anyone with a registered account on And don’t forget to join us for the premiere of RWBY Rewind with Chad and Yssa, live for FIRST Members on Tuesday 10/17 at 5p CT!

RWBY’s premiere means we’re approaching the most intense time of year for my team, who, as part of their responsibilities, helps to review fan projects to make sure they follow our Content Usage Guidelines. To give you a glimpse of what’s involved in this task, we typically receive about 30-50 YouTube ContentID claims per week, and that figure will more than double starting next week. That doesn’t include stuff from unauthorized third-party websites, which can be huge.

We absolutely love fan projects, and encourage you to keep making them! Technically, Rooster Teeth was founded as a fan project. Since Microsoft and 343 are kind enough to let us keep making Red vs. Blue even 15 seasons later, we feel a deep responsibility to pay it forward by allowing our community to participate in our content, transform it, play with it, react to it, and generally have fun with it.

To support this goal, we wrote up these handy Content Usage Guidelines that outline our approach toward fan projects. I’m proud to say we have some of the most lenient usage guidelines of any company I’ve ever seen.

Like I mentioned at the start, actually enforcing these guidelines is complicated and very manual. It’s impossible for a computer/algorithm/machine to reliably understand the difference between a reuploaded episode of RWBY and a reaction video where the reactor doesn’t say much, for instance. Because of that, if you feel a machine/computer/algorithm has flagged a project that in fact follows our guidelines, we have a process that makes sure you can let us and/or our partners at Fullscreen know when you want a human to review your project. We review these as quickly as possible during business hours (Monday through Friday, 10am - 6pm CT).

When you use our process to route your project for manual review, whether that’s in an email, on YouTube, or otherwise, we have our staff (actual, human people - not robots) handle your correspondence. We recognize this could be a very stressful situation, and we really appreciate your patience and kindness when it comes to this communication. This team works very hard and loves RT as much as you do, and they want to help you.

If you have questions about what’s OK and what is not, please take a minute to thoroughly review the Content Usage Guidelines. I’ll surface a few key points here for the TL;DR crowd:

    • In general, you’re allowed to use Rooster Teeth characters, worlds, video clips, or game play in your fan project, so long as your project is free to watch for everyone and/or you are not selling your project to any third parties.

    • It’s not OK to use our trademarked logos or words. This can confuse viewers into thinking your project is an officially endorsed RT project, which we want to avoid. Trademarks include the RWBY logo, Rooster Teeth logo, official illustrations of RWBY characters, or any designs featured on Rooster Teeth merch.

    • On YouTube, we use the ContentID tool to help us detect piracy. If your fan project contains a large amount of a Rooster Teeth video, it will most likely be claimed automatically when you upload it to your channel. The first policy we automatically apply is a “block” policy, which means your video won’t be visible at first. When this happens, all you need to do is dispute the claim in your Video Manager (here are more details on how dispute a claim). Within two business days, we will review your video and will either remove the claim or change the policy. If we don’t remove the claim or change the policy, that means our staff member who watched it decided it does not follow the Content Usage Guidelines or fair use provisions of the US Copyright Act, and our claim and/or policy is correct.

    • If your dispute was rejected and you still think your fan project follows the content usage guidelines, you can appeal the rejection and we will review the video a second time. At that point, we will reach out via email with three options: 1) If we agree on second review that your video should have a different policy applied, we will ask you to remove your appeal in a specified timeframe so we can apply a new policy to the video. We can’t apply a new policy unless you remove the appeal first. 2) If on second review we still think your video should have the same policy applied, we will ask you to remove your appeal in a specified timeframe. 3) If you do not remove your appeal within the timeframe we specify, we issue a copyright takedown and a strike will be issued to your channel. We hate doing this and rarely do it (about 1% of disputes end in takedowns, and I want that to be lower).

    • We will not review your fan project in advance and give approval ahead of time. Our process begins when you post your project to the web.

    • When we post content early on FIRST, we generally appreciate if you can limit your fan projects on other platforms, but we will apply the same guidelines to all fan projects no matter when/where they are posted.

    • Last but not least, we always reserve the right to handle your fan project as we see fit, or change these guidelines if we feel it’s necessary.

If you have any questions about this process, now is your chance to ask! We’ve spent a year adjusting and honing our guidelines based on specific cases we’ve run into, and we always want to find ways to make it better.

I've been meaning to use this space to make note of the unique events that tend to happen working at Rooster Teeth. This seems like a prime time to start!

Thanks to the whims of scheduling I ended up as the main/only active lighting artist on the final two episodes of RWBY Chibi Season 2. What luck then that it included the Halloween-themed episode in which I happened to have co-written and directed a sketch!

Getting to be so wholly hands on with a bit from start to finish is a rare opportunity and I'm pretty happy with the results, in no small part thanks to my fellow ChibiCrwby. The camera, animation, compositing, V/O and audio artists all came together to make things excellent indeed!

I also unleashed a little DIsturbia inspired spooky & colorful alternative lighting through the episode, all of which was fun to craft.

  • On The Spot Submission Thread #112

    Jon The Risemonger

We had some fun last week and I suggest we do it again this week. It's for our health.

    • Finish the sentence: How to...?
    • Feel free to submit more than one idea.

    • Submit the opening line to a short story that guests can complete as a team
    • Ex: One day, a small boy was walking in the woods and happened upon a magic talking rock...
    • Keep the prompt short but details will make it better

    • Come up with a 2 person scenario where the characters interact with each other a lot.
    • Be as descriptive as you want, this is a scene the guests have to play out.
    • Scenes that work best for this game have a high potential for rapid dialogue and confrontation.

BONUS GAME: COME AGAIN? You give me a prompt for a scene and I make them act it out. This week I'm looking for prompts involving:

    • Bad times at boot camp.
    • School dance shenanigans.
    • That one mystery Sherlock had a serious problem with.

  • Alien Isolation Re-Uploaded and 2Spooky October

    Hey guys,

As Miles already pointed out on Twitter, all episodes of Sponsor Play: Alien Isolation have been re-uploaded! That means you can once again watch them in HD or  maybe see them for the first time since the low quality bug may have been what was keeping you from watching. What's more exciting is that the episodes now have a new place to live but more about that later. First a little explanation about why it took so long to fix and the motivation for moving and re-uploading the episodes.

Every time a question is posted here or on Reddit about what to watch as a new FIRST member I always see a lot of suggestions for Sponsor Play: Alien Isolation. In those same comment threads I would also see a lot of responses to that suggestion and they were almost always about two things, how hard the episodes were to find on the site and how none of them were playing in HD anymore.

The low quality playback was a glitch caused by switching video players/hosts and was something I knew about for awhile. During the video host migration only a very low quality file was grabbed for some reason. I eventually figured out the only solution for this was to just re-upload the episodes with old exports but there was a problem. The location of the old exports had become fragmented over the years. Worse still was that I later found out a few exports were gone completely so that meant a totally new export had to be made. Now I had to find all of the exports AND project files across a few years of office moves, server changes, computer upgrades and backup drives. The biggest hurdle to all of this was the same hurdle that caused all of the files to become fragmented in the first place, time. However after a lot of searching and file
consolidating I was finally able to go back through and re-export the missing episodes of Alien Isolation. I handed everything off to our Programming Director, Melissa and she got everything re-uploaded last Friday so it will now play in HD rather than the low quality versions that were there. The re-upload also gave me a chance to address how hard it is to find the Alien Isolation episodes on the site.

All episodes of the Alien Isolation let's play Miles and I did for Sponsor Play can now be found under the Backwardz Comatible show tab! Just scroll down and click on "Episodes" and under that all episodes are sorted by year. You should find them under 2014 and 2015. Hopefully this makes it easier for new FIRST members to watch these for the FIRST time and for old members to re-watch them as much as they want.

Finally a little bit about the plans for Backwardz Compatible in October. There were a lot of great game suggestions in the comments on the last episode and I thought it would be a shame to just pick one. So for the month of October there will be a different spooky game each week. Obviously Alien Isolation is one of them since we did it last year but as for the rest you will just have to wait and see.

    Enjoy everyone.

I am not sorry for the pun.
