  • Tribalism and Cultural Outrage

    Deztine

With the modern age of social media driven outrage and the pretentious use of 'words equal power' comes a false love of importance through grouping together in ruining careers of people based off the weird or controversial things an individual has said over these social networking platforms.

Most people would rather justify themselves as doing the right thing as long as others are also in agreement with them, which inevitable results in totalitarian dogmatic witch hunting till a potential 'offender' is completely without a working career or even is safe from these 'I'm a victim for you' trains of hypocritical 'wokeness' baiting.

It's a sad world where 'I'm right, and you're without an job' becomes almost a normalcy towards people that simply may have it better than you do, or have gotten a lot of viral traction over a single tweet, although some argue both can go hand in hand at times. It's obnoxious emotion driven hate spreading that leads society into a socialistic and eventually communistic hive mind that goes back to witch burning and crucifixion as a way of dealing with someone you simply don't agree with.

Now that society is loving to silence opinions no matter how outlandish instead of understanding the importance of freedom of speech anymore, all the while using that same freedom to try and turn around and say 'you can't say this' to a platform made for bullshitting and attention seeking, I resign to say these people either are smart and know what they're doing or are completely unaware of their surroundings enough to think what someone said to them over a text box on a popular website somehow should effect you enough to get angry and resort to a high of self importance through belittling that person.

Really though, I can really see why our society has been shutting their doors more to social situations every year. From basically dismantling freedom of speech in EU to it not seeming that impossible to happen in other westernized societies.

Anyway, 'stay woke' and hope you eye doesn't pop out from how woke you are.

WOW. This place has changed. I haven't been on this account for 7 years!

Haven't they done well! Love everything you do Rooster Teeth. You never disappoint.

PS. FUNHAUS are amazing. They're immense.

  • I Only Like Funhaus Anyways

After being into Rooster Teeth content well before they even split into Achievement Hunter and Rooster Teeth, I find a lot of what they do completely toned down their personalities (dependent on political subject matter) turning my favourite 'I'm going to say something crude and controversial' group into a facetious single minded perspective of patting each other on the back to attribute to things I can tell they simply don't agree with.

Their occupation around animation, acting, production really shaped them to that cultural hemisphere of 'If it ain't liberal we'll not work or acknowledge you',hence why people complain because Joel never got the attention he deserved only them pretentiously going 'this is what you guys wanted right' to include him in things as a way to avoid the actual acknowledgement he was looking for.

I sense an ongoing shoving of PC culture down the throats of my last remaining favourite crude humour loving YouTube channel (as you guessed it, Funhuas) from those 'checking up on them' visits the Rooster Teeth higher ups keep paying them, making me believe they're doing a lot of finger waving when it comes to them saying anti-PC jokes.

There is a lot of undertone pressure I feel in this community to conformity and not to truly openness, which I saw very blatantly from the last ever Off Topic video I watched with the spewing of vitriol towards religious or other views just to make basically a contradicting point about inclusivity while alienating part of their much longer lasting fanbase with saying (paraphrased) 'fuck you and if you don't like what we say don't watch us'.

All in All, Rooster Teeth lost the touch that made me enjoy them and from the steady declination in their Podcast videos enjoyment of humorous crude fun they now seem to suck dry stirring the pot and making everything having to do with a poltiical perspective or gender politics. I watched them for the fun and talks about strange things they read online, now I can't watch them at all.

I joined the community over 5 years ago, and yet, I never felt a part of it. I never wrote journals, I didn't comment on videos, I just sorta ghosted the company and community, but I want to change that starting today. I want to be more involved with the lovely people in the community, the incredible people at RT, and make friends in the process.

I should probably introduce myself then. I'm Jordan, I'm 20, from Birmingham, UK, but now live in Cardiff, Wales. I love comics, PS4, archery, pop punk music, RT (obviously), Mr Robot. I'm sure there's more but I can't remember

  • Hardcore Tabletop Ep. 1 Review & Impressions

    JeovanyZaval Jman9877
We've all seen the guys and gals of Achievement Hunter take on what is the gargantuan task of completing a game of Monopoly several times. Each subsequent play through was met with increasing levels of apathy, disdain, and salt. But now with the added incentive of glory to be had and mad stacks to be made, how will an all out real estate war between our favorite Achievement Hunters play out? This is... Hardcore Tabletop.

I've been a longtime viewer of the Achievement Hunter crew since the days of Let's Play Minecraft Episode 1. As a Freshman in high school and a longtime player of Minecraft I was so excited to watch some of the funniest guys on YouTube blindly stumble over the cliff that was Xbox Minecraft, seeing them explore the environments and experiment with what was seemingly unlimited possibilities as long as they could think of it. The series eventually gave way to some of the greatest moments and episodes of any Achievement Hunter Let's Play, ranging from the birth of the Tower of Pimps in On a Rail, to the discovery of Gav's Trophy Room of Victory in Enchantment Level 30. These videos were a testament to just how versatile and engaging Minecraft could be, but nothing would compare to the utter chaos that would become the first episode of Episode 95, Let's Play Monopoly.

Albeit chaos may not be the best way to describe the eventual 3 part series, note that the players eventually got so fed up with playing the simulated Board Game that they opted to instead melt their hard earned Iron, Gold, and Diamonds into Weapons and Armor and fight to the death instead of play until the usual Bankruptcy rules. As stated by Michael in the 3rd part of the series they had spent a majority of their recording time for the day spent on a single game of Monopoly, and the series took almost 7 months to be completely released. Maybe ending in total bloodshed was the only way the torment would end. Although they had technically killed the beast that was Minecraft Monopoly, like any good villain it will never truly stay dead. Enter stage left, Dark Monopoly.

With the unfortunate yet amicable departure of fan favorite Ray Narvaez Jr., it was Jeremy Dooley's turn to enter the game and try his hand at being the Real Estate Magnate we always knew he could be. With the board being vastly improved thanks to the creative mind of Matt Bragg and with a much more concise and clear rule set, the Dark Monopoly series was a huge creative overhaul and improvement. Of course that didn't stop the general amount of disdain for the game from showing up, with players quickly and sometimes deliberately getting themselves knocked out of the game to go and explore and dick around to their hearts content. It seemed as if Monopoly was cursed to be this black sheep of the Achievement Hunter crew, a spectacle to behold but not to be enjoyed, fun for a moment with the feelings of joy fleeting at best. But no, this wouldn't be the last time Achievement Hunter would foray into the Parker Bros. harsh and cutthroat world of property management. At last on August 2nd at the Paramount Theater, RTX presented a new Achievement Hunter show which got this attendee and the surrounding audience to ooh and ahh with glee. Finally, Hardcore Tabletop showed us everything Monopoly could be and more...

General Review - Hardcore Tabletop Ep.1

When shown the premise of the game and the prize at stake, it's immediately clear just how engaged the participants were in making sure they were playing as optimally as they could. With the players introductions, Alfredo Diaz, Michael Jones, Jack Patillo, Jeremy Dooley, Matt Bragg, and Ryan Haywood, it was glaringly obvious that each of these players were there to win, and the apathy seen in all previous installments of Monopoly was long gone. Additional participants were also present, with father of the original Minecraft Monopoly Geoff Ramsey as "The Banker", Lindsay Jones as "The Bailiff", and guest star Elyse Willems as "The Referee".

This was no slapped together production as well. With previous installments of Monopoly being produced in Minecraft, most production value went towards the equipment used to run and capture the game, and the copious amounts of junk food Matt Bragg consumed while constructing the board. In Hardcore Tabletop the name gives credence to how serious this game is going to be, with a fully customized game board featuring an assortment of references and nods to previous Achievement Hunter Let's Plays. Some of the funnier moments will be lost to those who haven't watched certain series, such as references towards GTA V Let's Plays and the induction of Jeremy Dooley's famous character "Rimmy Tim".

Despite some perhaps missing a laugh or two at the fact that the two cheapest property spaces on the board are listed as "Gavin's Desk" and "Lovely Ryan", the character performances given by the cast more than make up for these lost moments. Each member of the game express themselves in only slightly exaggerated mannerisms similar to their normal personalities, Michael and Jeremy yelling in anger at inopportune moments, Ryan calmly scheming and conniving to overtake his opponents, and Lindsay behaving as the no nonsense if slightly bumbling dork we've all come to love... right YouTube comments? No character feels over exaggerated to the point of parody, and years of experience of playing and riffing off of each other makes the back and forth feel natural and organic.

Another small yet very important note I made about the episode was the inclusion of the CORRECT RULES OF MONOPOLY. For some unknown reason, many households across the world adopted these strange "house rules" for Monopoly, with absurd additions such as "money from income and luxury tax being collected and given to whoever lands on free parking" and "choosing not to buy a property and simply ending my turn". These rules have huge damaging effects to most monopoly games, and are the culprits behind the common belief that a game of Monopoly last for hours and are never ending. Hardcore Tabletop eschews these rules however, with Income and Luxury Taxes simply going back to the bank and Free Parking simply being what it reads on the tin. Free Parking. no money gained, no money spent. Enjoy your consequence free turn. Properties are as well managed correctly, where if a player chooses not to purchase a property they land on it doesn't simply end their turn, it instead goes up for a public auction where anyone can bid whatever they choose. This keeps the game from stagnating and instead moving forward and flowing, and while a game might still last for a few hours it won't become the never ending slog Monopoly has been known to become.

Hardcore Tabletop Episode 1 has premiered for the general Public on both RoosterTeeth.com and YouTube. FIRST Members also have access to Episode 2, and it is probable that the remainder of the series will remain FIRST Exclusive. But should a General Member of RoosterTeeth.com upgrade to FIRST for a single show? Please allow me to give my final verdicts.

    FINAL VERDICTS

This show is a Production I didn't know I needed, with my love of face paced and high stakes games combined with Achievement Hunters incredible chemistry culminating into one of the most entertaining new releases Rooster Teeth has put out in months. If you are on the fence about upgrading your account to a FIRST Membership, then this is a show that should be the push over the fence you've been looking for.

But if you are unsure about a FIRST Membership, or generally not a fan of Achievement Hunter, then this will not be the show for you. Some of the humor relies on being aware of AH callbacks and references, and paying a premium for a single show is not something I would recommend.

And finally, for those who are already FIRST Members and love Achievement Hunter, then this show is an absolute must watch. Get some friends together and drink every time Jeremy or Matt complain about not owning any Properties and prepare a ride to the hospital, you're gonna need it.

Thank you for reading my first review! Please feel free to give any and all criticism in the replies and comments. See you all next week!

Finally back home from visiting family, and hyped as hell, because a week from tomorrow I leave for RTX! Not looking forward to the 19 hour drive there, and the 40 hour round trip, but it's all gonna be worth it!

    WEEKLY UPDATE

    Completed Series

Alternative Lifestyle: Maybe it's just me, but after Akrasia and the killing of Parker, this series felt a little too into its continuing storylines. I know that I was praising that last week, but this kind of half scripted, half off the cuff just became grating after a while. Don't get me wrong; I've started to love Sugar Pine 7. But I'm glad that I'm not watching this series anymore.

Amazon Prime Time: However, unlike Sugar Pine 7, I have no love of Cow Chop. And Amazon Prime Time did nothing to help that fact. I've never liked grossout humor, I've never liked mean-spirited teasing for a laugh, and I've never liked random bullshit for the sake of random bullshit. This seems like Cow Chop's ENTIRE deal, which has led to an executive decision I've made, detailed in the updates section.

    Current Series

Backwardz Compatible: Now THIS is a series I can fall in love with! Achievement Hunter doesn't have a whole lot of Full Plays, so Miles (my fav RT employee) and Kyle fully playing some great games is a series I can get behind. Loving every second of it so far.

Current Episode: Fatal Frame #4 - Big Sexy

    Generic Updates

So let's go ahead and start with the update that actually APPLIES to this marathon: I'm removing everything from Cow Chop. Bitch at me all you want (though no one will, because no one reads this journal anyway), but I can't stand Cow Chop. That's not to say they're bad. What I'm saying is that Cow Chop is a very niche demographic. And I hate that niche. While this does remove (to my calculation) 10 series from the marathon, it's become a far better quality marathon now, at least to me.

But, this hasn't changed the AMOUNT of series in the marathon by that much. Because I'm splitting AH Let's Play even more, into a few other series. Cloudberry Kingdom, Mario Party, Worms, Rainbow Six, Git Gud, and Uno: The Movie. To mix things up a little, I've decided to reorganize the AH Let's Play categories based on the game - otherwise, they'd all be in a row. This adds 6 more series to the marathon, so it balances out with Cow Chop's removal.

In other news, we're less than 2 weeks from RTX! I decided to buy floor tickets for the Jeff Williams concert, so I'm looking forward to that. I also managed to get a session for Gray and Kerry's autographs, since Miles was already unavailable by the time they opened for non-Platinum members. HYPE!

  • All Game Attack Sub Revenue in August Is Going To Extra Life

    CraigSkitz

    Hello RT community!!!

Today we're SUPER pumped to announce that ALL subscriber revenue Game Attack earns from Twitch in the month of August will be donated to Extra Life this year! We see this as an opportunity to raise some money for a great cause. In addition, we're going to match all Tier 1, 2 & 3 sub revenue up to $2,500. That means if we have $1,000 in sub revenue and $250 comes from Tier 1, 2 & 3 subs on Twitch, we'll make a total donation of $1,250.

Extra Life is a BIG deal for RT every year. Since no other brands at Rooster Teeth or Let's Play aside from Kinda Funny stream on Twitch, this is an awesome chance for the RT community to come together & use their free Twitch Prime subs to go to a great cause.

Why are we announcing this two weeks before August? Because Like all things Game Attack - this has to be a grassroots campaign to spread the word about this opportunity to give big to Extra Life! We're asking for your help to hit up the RT community pages and even other brands - on Reddit, Twitter, on Facebook, and on RoosterTeeth.com!

If you'd like to support you can sub to GA on Twitch (https://www.twitch.tv/gameattackteam) and hopefully we can raise some serious money for the kiddos.

    Game Attack's Twitch channel: https://www.twitch.tv/gameattackteam

How to use your Amazon Prime account to benefit for free: https://www.twitch.tv/Prime

    Let's have a great August!

The hype for RTX is only growing more and more - only matched by the desperate scrounging for money I'm going to need for the inevitable litany of merch I buy. Currently debating on whether or not to buy tickets for the Jeff Williams concert. Oh well, more RT!

    WEEKLY UPDATE

    Completed Series

Achievement Hunter Hockey League 2016: I loved every second of this. As a hockey fan (my team, the Carolina Hurricanes, was unfortunately not represented), it was a little awkward and clunky, but as a season I was enraptured until the very end. Honestly, I called Michael winning, but Ryan winning in overtime is still a pretty great way to end it.

Lifestyle Classic: After watching a lot of Alternative Lifestyle, I assume that Classic is their version of fucking around without any dramatic story elements. And I can understand that, but part of why I'm so absorbed in Sugar Pine 7 is the continuing storylines in Alternative. But I still enjoyed this series.

    Current Series

Alternative Lifestyle: The thing that seperates this from other Youtube fuckery shows is that Alternative Lifestyle actually has a kind of storyline in the videos. From Parker's death to Jeremy being a psycho to famous actor James Allen Mccune, I'm getting more into Sugar Pine 7 than ever. But am I the only one that finds it a little hard to marathon them?

Current Episode: Movie night. (Alternative Style Season 2)

    Generic Updates

So I've got a question for the six people who read this: if you're going to RTX, what are you getting signed, and by who? I'm gunning for Miles (the best RT employee) to sign my copy of Fire Emblem 8. Here's hoping!

Man, isn't this a hectic time in the RT community? Summer of Animation, the 500th Rooster Teeth Podcast, and RTX coming in less than a month? It seems like a crazy time. (For the six people who actually read this journal series, I will be both watching podcast 500 live AND going to RTX.) But there isn't a better time to marathon more RT!

    WEEKLY UPDATE

    Completed Series

Achievement Hunter: Really, what can I say about this series that hasn't already been said? It's Achievement Hunter doing what they do best. I loved every second of watching them, but surprisingly my favorite moment was an episode I had never seen before this past Thursday: the Long Walk in Seven Days to Die. Who knew that walking south could be so fun to watch?

    Current Series

Achievement Hunter Hockey League 2016: I'm getting INCREDIBLY absorbed in this, despite the fact that I know who ends up in the finals (don't know who wins, no spoilers). Watching Nonsense Ryan and Southeast Pimberton's litany of goals never fails to amuse me. And I can't wait to see this series through after the final Michael vs. Ryan showdown.

Current Episode: 2016 Achievement Hunter Hockey League: NNNH Division (Week 5)

    Generic Updates

RTX is less than a month away, and I can't wait to go! While I'm not cosplaying while I'm there (couldn't afford that) I'm going to be in Austin from the 2nd to the 6th enjoying the festivities of everyone's favorite Internet company.

Week 4, I bid you adieu. Week 5, let's go!

Ah, the rut of a longer series. While I certainly whittled it down a lot during the 2.1 update, Achievement Hunter is still a massive section. Hey, I'm not complaining.

    WEEKLY UPDATE

    Completed Series

Achievement HUNT: After watching the rest of them, I can safely say that Nut Ball was still my favorite episode, as childish as that is. A little sad that this series ended, especially considering it turned into a proper achievement hunting series at the end, but I'm not too mad about it.

    Current Series

Achievement Hunter: The first really massive set, as split off as I've made it. It's pretty much a hodgepodge of content for what's left, and I'm enjoying every minute of it.

Current episode: 7 Days to Die - The End and the Beginning (#1)

    Generic Updates

I decided to split off Minecraft, GMod, and GTA from the Let's Play section as well, adding 3 more seperate series to the ever-growing pile of things I have to watch in this marathon. Hey, it makes things easier on me.

If AGDQ doesn't rob my time for the marathon, here's hoping we can break out of Achievement Hunter by Week 4!

So I ended up splitting off Let's Build from Let's Play during the Achievement Hunter splitting venture, since it's pretty much its own series.

And Achievement Hunter has been fractured into 6 other series, making a total of 7 new additions. The new series are Game Night, Battle Buddies, RT Inter-Office Smite Tournament, 2016 NHL League, Presented with Comment, and Grab Bag, plus what remains the original Achievement Hunter series. Which brings the total amount of series to watch to 148. So here's the updated list:

As I assumed, Week 2 has resulted in a slowdown of completed series. But, considering that we're into the thick of Achievement Hunter shows, which can take a while, I'm not too worried about it. Plus, I've been surprisingly busy this past week.

    WEEKLY UPDATE

    Completed Series

Achievement Hunter Animated: I spoke about my feelings on this great series last week, so go read that for a more comprehensive opinion. Even so, I still love it.

Achievement HORSE: I have mixed feelings about this one. It's great as a background series, and getting some of the RT staff to join in was awesome. But it's clear as the series went on that no one but Jack really WANTED to do HORSE outside of tournaments. I feel like it had a good run, but if it had gone on longer than it did, I think it wouldn't have been as good.

Trials PIG: See my feelings on Achievement HORSE, but on a faster time scale. I think looping this with something like Trials Files would have been really cool, but as it stands, it ended up being kind of mediocre in my opinion.

    Current Series

Achievement HUNT: I've seen bits and pieces of this one before, but this is the first time I've marathoned it. I like the idea of a 2-man mini Let's Play that it's adopting in the later episodes. Actually, now that I think about it, I'm not really a fan of audio over pre-taped clips outside of Fails of the Week. Favorite episode of HUNT so far has got to be Nut Ball, though.'

Current Episode: Achievement HUNT: State of Decay - Geoff vs. Michael

    Generic Updates

So I'm probably going to break down Achievement Hunter into several mini series. Maybe something like Presented with Comment, Battle Buddies, etc. and then the generic videos that remain will be Achievement Hunter. I'll add those to my list in other places, and keep generic AH where it is.

Well, the marathon is off to a pretty good start! (for those who have NO idea what I'm talking about, go see the #0 entry.)  But then again, I suppose that the beginning of adventures like this always go better than future weeks. It's like starting a daily workout, only much more entertaining.

    WEEKLY UPDATE

    Completed Series:

1-800-MAGIC: I had never seen this before starting this marathon. I had assumed it was a pretty early venture into other machinima a la the Strangerhood, and I was right. Honestly, the 20 minutes it took to watch it was probably just enough time before it would have gotten annoying. Now, that's not to say it's bad, just that I'm glad it didn't overstay it's welcome.

A Look Back At: A pretty solid series on old 360 titles, which is especially nice a few years after the Xbox One came out. Really made me want to go back and actually play Mass Effect. (If anyone cares, I'm currently playing Dark Souls Remastered.) Also really made me miss Fragger and Ray.

A Simple Walk into Mordor: This series is very different on this viewing, since I hadn't actually seen or read LOTR when I saw it. Having done both now, I have to say that it's a lot more enjoyable with LOTR experience. While it's still pretty cool without that knowledge, it's even better with it. Plus, 'Bilbo Baggins' might be my new favorite term for testicles. Thanks, Chris!

A Spot of Science/Let Me Clarify: On watching this series, I ended up realizing that it was pretty much a miniature science podcast. But I was already four episodes into ASOS at the time, and said screw it. Sally Le Page is surprisingly fun to listen to, and the questions were really interesting - my personal favorite being the evolved mosquitoes in the London Underground.

Achievement Hunter Minimations/Straight Outta RT: It's been a while since I've seen these, and I still love them. Any animated version of AH shenaniganry is always entertaining to me, but it's not just AH here, either! Animated podcast moments in something that isn't RTAA is rare. And while I love the fact that modern Achievement Hunter Animated is all about fan animation, I would love to see Minimations make a return.

    Current Series

Achievement Hunter Animated: I'm currently in a show that I go back and watch all the time. See my thoughts on Minimations. I still think the best one is their very first, "Gavin Explains the Star War." Gavin trying to make sense of a text scroll and the rest of AH being done with his shit is something that will make me laugh until the end of time.

Current episode: AH Animated - Choose Your Pokemon

    Generic Updates

I'm fully expecting the Achievement Hunter series to take more than one week to get through (there are a few series like that for me), and I'm taking another step to alleviate that: I'm skipping achievement guides. Yeah, I'm cutting more content from the marathon, but I don't feel like watching a bunch of videos on how to get achievements in games I don't have. Now, things like ALBA and Imaginary Achievements I'll still watch, since there's more than just getting an achievement. But even without achievement guides, I think Achievement Hunter is gonna take two weeks, minimum.

Here's to continuing into Week 2!

I'm either a really dedicated fan, or a really fucking crazy one.

So, being bored a few days ago, as well as being slightly stir-crazy from not having a car, I'm going to embark on a journey that I don't think has been done before now:

I'm going to watch EVERYTHING RooserTeeth and it's subsidiaries (at the time of writing, Achievement Hunter, Funhaus, Screw Attack, Game Attack, Cow Chop, Sugar Pine Seven, and JT Music) have ever made, adding whatever series are started during this long-ass period, until I get through it all.

Granted, when I say everything, I don't mean every single second of content that RoosterTeeth has ever made. I would never be able to finish that. I'm anticipating the Let's Play and Achievement Hunter series alone to take several months. So, let me lay down some ground rules for this massive (and honestly probably stupid) journey.

    1. No podcasts. I actually started listening to the RT Podcast from episode 1 back in January of 2015, and literally finished listening to the last one Tuesday. And while I love the podcasts (RT, Off Topic, and Fan Service in particular), they're more of an audio thing for me. I'm aware that this cuts a MASSIVE amount of content, but keep this in mind: just because I'm not watching them for this, doesn't mean I'm not watching them. I usually listen to them when I'm doing other stuff anyway. However, I am keeping in Theater Mode, if nothing else but for the fact that I love shitty movies.

    2. No post shows. Considering that most of the post shows are for podcasts anyway, I don't really see an issue with this. For The Win is the only one off the top of my head I can think of, and it still falls within the range of mostly auditory content.

    3. No repeat content/extended content. Quick Bits and Rest Of are the two big ones that I can think of, and I don't think this'll be a problem.

    4. No event-specific livestreams. Extra Life, AH Spring Break, and others are things I tune into, but once again, aren't including in this mega-marathon.

    5. No music-specific shows. Sorry, JT Music, but I'm not including you in the veritable avalanche of content. (Appreciate your work, though!)

    6. No shows that rely on the time they come out to work (The Know, AHWU, etc.)

I know that it sounds like a lot of content that I'm cutting from this marathon (and it is, once you factor in how long the podcasts are), but let me reiterate: I'm not technically skipping them, I'm passing over a few things that I've already seen that wouldn't work for a marathon. There are some shows (like Cow Chop Theater Mode) that I could cut - but since I haven't seen those, I'm not cutting them. (Please don't roast me in the chat for this bois)

    7. Some series I'm combining for the purpose of making things a little easier on me. (10 Little Roosters and 11 Little Roosters, CRWBY and RWBY Rewind, etc.) And I may be combining a lot just to make keeping track of where I am less of a headache.

    8. However, I'm not combining RvB: PSA and Red vs. Blue. This is because while I'm trying to watch things as alphabetically as I can, I'm intentionally watching Red vs. Blue last. As the first content that RoosterTeeth ever made, I think it only fitting.

I'll be releasing a journal entry update for how this journey progresses every Monday, though most likely not at a set time. (Hey, I've got things to do. My life isn't all RT. Only about 40 percent.) It'll consist of three things: my thoughts on the shows I've seen over the week (or sections of a show if I'm in one of the longer ones), thoughts on what's coming in the week, and a comprehensive list of what shows I have left - with some generic RoosterTeeth thoughts thrown in from time to time.

And with all that said, here's the current list of shows that I have remaining:

  • Broadcast, Pilot Month, Theater Mode and more!

    Stab RT Broadcast Producer

    Hey Everyone,

Just wanted to write a little update regarding things happening in here at Rooster Teeth regarding Broadcast, Pilot Month, Theater Mode and more!

First things first, Pilot Month. Pilots are interesting here at RT. A television pilot is usually kept behind closed doors, analyzed, and shown to a testing group before making it anywhere to an audience. Here at RT, the community is our testing group. And the pilot is put out ahead of any official season to get your opinion. We want to hear your thoughts, because at the end of the day it's a show for you and the rest of the Rooster Teeth community. For Pilot month Broadcast has two new shows, very different from any other shows we have done in the past. They are Gorq's Quest and Murder Room (link). Both have been in the works here for a bit and they have grown progressively during their testing phase. I can't say much right now, but you can see Gorq's Quest on May 15th and Murder Room on May 31st. I think both will be a favorite among community members who enjoy the game-based shows.

Alright, now for some Theater Mode. I hope you've enjoyed the first season of Funhaus Theater Mode. It was awesome to work with Elyse and the rest of the Funhaus team on the season and I hope to do more of the show in the future. I personally have really enjoyed Funhaus' style for the show- going for something a little closer to the original MST3K style.

Recently we shot our first live episode of Theater Mode at the Alamo Draft House in South Austin. Thank you to everyone who came out to the event. This is a first for us. If it proves successful it can mean doing this type of production more often and possibly not just in Austin. You can expect the edited release during the next volume of Theater Mode. Now that I got you thinking about the next volume, let's talk about it for a second. We are working on acquiring new films for the next volume as well as testing a few new ideas- TM Live being one test. I don't have much to say beyond that, except for wait for the official announcement sometime soon.

The last thing I wanted to mention in this update is regarding changes in RT Broadcast's crew. You probably saw on this past Monday's episode of the RT Podcast that Eric Baudor from Mega 64 has joined our crew. Eric will be taking the position as our new Podcast Producer, working on RT Podcast, Always Open, and other emerging shows in our lineup. We welcome him to our rag-tag team of Broadcasters.

Lastly, you've probably noticed a new face on Fridays in the Broadcast pre-stream for Off Topic and Death Battle Cast. Dennis Fant is his name. He's a former Broadcast intern that had a particular talent for our graphics system and has been helping me by taking over a few weekly shows. Now I'm happy to say he'll be joining us as the permanent Live Graphics Operator for all our shows here at Broadcast.

As for me, I'll be working more behind the scenes as the Producer for Let's Play Productions in Broadcast. Basically anytime a Let's Play group is shooting in Broadcast, I'll be there to work on it one way or another.

That's all I have for now.
    See ya!

I was able to meet the Funhaus crew last night at a meet and greet for those who bought tickets to their show that was canceled.  I got all their autographs and was able to take pictures with almost everyone! It was incredible! They were so nice and genuine and I was on cloud nine. heart_eyes

  • Who am I? Why am I here?

    ShadeRPG

Since I actually have a friend on the RT site now for the first time ever (*gasp*), I figured I'd write a little bit about me in a journal since I can't really do that in the "About Me" section (at least as it currently exists, though I know the community site is getting an overhaul in the near future).

My name is Eric, though online I am probably more comfortable going by Shade, but I don't care that much. Born in 1986, I'm in my early thirties and in a much different place in my life than I expected to be -- a much different place than I was, even just a year prior to writing this post. I've been following Rooster Teeth since year 1 (I can't remember exactly when, but it was definitely within a year of its existence, after season 1 of Red vs Blue was fully available), so although I've never used this profile or interacted with the community very much before now, no matter what, something about the RT site feels like home. Come with me and listen to a story about my experience with Rooster Teeth (and eventually other groups) and a bit about my life ever since RT entered it...

Back during my senior year of high school, both me and one of my best friends at the time watched RvB religiously, and threw quotes at each other left and right (this continued through roughly season 6, so it totally became a thing between us for years to come). I watched a lot of Achievement Hunter videos on my own when it was created in 2008. At some point around then, sponsorship to RT began providing benefits in the form of early access to RvB. I believe he created an account first and signed up for sponsorship, and then I did, thus this account's creation in 2009. But in 2010, I moved out of state, and unfortunately RT became more of "my thing" than "our thing" pretty quickly.

However, about a year after moving...I met the woman who became my wife. I introduced her to Rooster Teeth via RvB, which led to us watching other RT content, then Achievement Hunter...then Funhaus from its formation in 2015.

2015 was particularly special because it's the only year we were together where we had enough money to travel to RTX in Austin. We were fortunate enough to get signings with 4 people -- I chose Burnie and Matt, and my wife chose Geoff and Griffin. I am incredibly grateful that we got to meet them, because it turned out to be one of the best experiences ever for my wife. We got pictures with Matt and Burnie, and she got one with Geoff and Griffin (hey, I didn't get one!). I took video of her interacting with Geoff and Griffin too. It was really cute, kind of like one time when it snowed at our apartment and she sent me a selfie with the goofiest but happiest smile. :)

From then on though, paying the bills had a higher priority than attempting to go to RTX, so we were never able to return, although I was secretly starting to save and was planning to surprise her with a trip to RTX 2018. Unfortunately that did not happen because, nearly a year ago now, I lost my partner in life -- and my beautiful terrier-heeler mix, Alaska, lost her mommy -- my wife passed away on June 12, 2017.

She dealt with severe depression and anxiety and took her own life while I was at work. It must have been a really horrible day for her. Normally she would tell me about these days, but there were occasional times when she didn't, and -- this was unfortunately one of those times. Although we were persistent with trying new meds and doctors and therapists, nothing stuck; she had made a few failed suicide attempts over the years. On June 12, 2017, she succeeded.

It was the most devastating thing I have ever experienced, and quite possibly the most difficult thing I will EVER experience, emotionally. Among the countless invaluable things I lost along with her life, was my RT buddy -- we watched so many things together, since our couch time was priceless to us. Still, since I'd been following RT for about 14 years when it happened, the crutch it offered me was invaluable, during what were the most difficult months of my life.

The wide variety, creativity, humor, collaboration, and good will that radiated (and still does) from everyone under the RT umbrella and Let's Play family could not be any more evident to me. On different days, in different moods, my favorite thing to watch could be anything. Barbara and Mariel kicking back and offering incredibly mature, open, direct advice on Always Open about things that have some sort of stigma involved with them (or a stigma with talking about them); the unpredictable chaos and humor in the Achievement Hunter office; the sage professional life advice and shorter-form humor of Funhaus; the utter destruction witnessed from Cow Chop; the fruition of potential in Sugar Pine 7's cinematography over the span of less than a year.

I'm so grateful to Rooster Teeth. I don't know where I'd be right now, emotionally, without them...as weird as that probably sounds, and as weird as it feels to say it. I'm grateful for what so many of the personalities my wife loved provided to her life when she felt trapped in her own mind so often. You helped her forget, and remember the good in people, and that she can feel okay being happy and laughing sometimes.

She died far too young. But I will always be grateful for the ways she helped me grow and become a better human. And to RT for everything they've done -- for both of us. I'm a lifelong fan, so don't expect me to be going anywhere.

Although you can find my name in two Dude Soup Post Shows (points to anyone who can find which ones), nobody really knows who I am in the general RT community at present since I'm mostly a lurker...so I don't expect this post or even this sentence to necessarily go anywhere meaningful. BUT, in the event that it does: feel free to let me know if you have any questions about anything in my post. I try to be pretty open about things, though please be respectful.

  • The Search For Employment

Years ago, I discovered a YouTube channel that eventually turned my life into a downward spiral. All good intentions. Achievement Hunter, at the time, was composed of several insane people that for some god forsaken reason, always seemed to tickle my funny bone. I became so enthralled by these people that it led to me watching just about every video they ever made. I was even heart broken when Ray left.

Skip forward about 6 years and now I'm looking to apply there. Maybe not now, and maybe not soon, but hopefully after I go to college. Ew. When I was in middle school, I never knew how much of an affect these people would have on me. Achievement Hunter led me to discover so many other amazing channels as well like FunHaus and ScrewAttack.

Fingers crossed that one day I can be apart of the same team that put me through all of that bullshit.  grinning

  • Sea of Thieves VS Fortnite: Why Pirates Win

    UnWreckQuested

Xbox and PC players have been emotionally split in their reception of the new hit pirating game from Rare, Sea of Thieves. Already, executives and developers have been fighting the fires of complaints from bored gamers claiming a lack of content and progression. Sea of Thieves Executive Producer Joe Neate told IGN that Sea of Thieves will “continue to grow and evolve” organically alongside its dedicated fans.

But there’s something that Sea of Thieves has that particularly sets it apart in today’s videogame culture, a characteristic that some love and some hate.

Sea of Thieves and Fortnite are presently two of the largest games on Xbox One. Both offer optional PvP elements and involve looting chests while exploring a medium-size map. The key difference between these two games lies deep within the philosophy of the game developers.

Fortnite is a closed system game. Battle royale games by definition require that players join at a synchronous point and are not able to load into that game’s instance after it begins. Players are thus forced to all operate on an equal playing field; players start with nothing and only have a universal amount of time to compete.

On the other hand, Sea of Thieves is an open system game. The game allows players to drop in and drop out. Instead of all loading in at once, players are able to leave and join a particular game’s instance at any point without necessary detriment to their experience of play. The scaling of gameplay, in order to allow PvP to continue without exponential threat to beginning players, lies in the lack of ability to upgrade weaponry & defense, opposite of Fortnite.

Closed system multiplayer games force players to engage in a much more active manner. In closed system PvP, if players are not constantly focused on performing in ways that will further their success over others, they will lose. No getting around it. But in drop-in/out systems, players are able to choose moments where they can focus on parts of their experience that do not pit themselves against others.

Because of this, Sea of Thieves has a capacity to offer a form of gameplay that is contiguous. Instead of winning a single round of battle royale, Sea of Thieves allows for players to continue their success and advancement from one session to the next. It’s not so much that it’s casual, it’s that you can never truly lose.

And that’s the key difference between players that love or hate Sea of Thieves:

Some players love the risk that exists in games that you can truly lose while others prefer a format that allows continuous success.

Another Xbox-Microsoft classic showcases this form of play: Minecraft. Players are able to continue to join and advance in a particular instance of a game without ever truly losing. Sure, players can be killed in PvP just like in Sea of Thieves, but within that same instance of the game they can choose to continue pursuing success.

So, what kind of gamer are you? Do you prefer risk or choice? Do you prefer to be able to lose or be able to continue to advance forward? What do you think makes different kinds of games sustainable?

What is your personal ranking of the RvB seasons? And why specifically do think this way about them?
