  • The Power Of A Good Soundtrack

    LoZelda Supposedly An Adult

No matter what form of media you tend to consume, I think we can all agree that a good soundtrack can have a wicked impact on how you react to and process it. I often will jam to soundtracks of games and movies long after I've seen/played it, and in some cases I'll throw myself deeply into albums for movies or games I never even touched. The way music resonates with emotions and the imaginative part of the brain is fascinating, and I've enjoyed doing little experiments with myself by listening to soundtrack music both with and without the context of where it's from.

Inspired by a recent obsession, I kind of want to branch that out to see how other people react to such things. I wrote up a post the other day about the music experiment I want to run, and I'd love to see a variety of people participate in it. If you're so inclined, you can follow the link in the post to shoot me an email and I'll forward you the tracks I'm testing this out with (all track names have been removed, and the tracks themselves have been shuffled so they can exist on their own without the natural buildup present in each album). I've already had a handful of people email me and I'm really excited to see how this turns out!

With the summer far in our rear-view mirror I can't help but miss those warm summer days in these subzero temperatures. Summer Dreams Away By Shane Simonsen is a song to reminisce on a warm summer's night or hanging with friends and enjoying yourselves. With the upbeat sounds of the acoustic guitar combined with the smooth vocals that Simonsen provides makes this song an escape from the cold that is more than welcome. For anyone who doesn't want to stay in the cold weather then this song would make a good escape for you. As Always Keep on Listening.

All genres have vastly different sub-genres to them from rocks indie pop to hard rock, and others like classic jazz and acid jazz. Rap is no exception, Lemme Freak By Lil Dicky pushes boundaries by making rap hilarious in the lyrics while still keeping the beats hot. What his songs and style bring to the rap game is something that others can compete with, he's in a league of his own. What Weird Al did with conventional songs Lil Dicky brings to the rap game. If you want to take a listen to the weird, and awesome side of rap then definitely listen to it. As Always Keep on Listening.

With the game awards come and gone for 2017 it has been an eventful year for gaming. Some of the games released have amazing soundtracks to go with them that just enhances the overall experience. Taking those soundtracks from the games and listening to them on their own is an amazing experience in and of itself. Although my choice for best soundtrack Cuphead didn't win the music itself is a joy to listen to. With its uptempo beat that makes you want to keep moving, like a good side scroller should, just listening to the music makes you want to keep playing the game. The 1930's art style that the game has is benefited from the music from that time to just immerse you into the experience. If you haven't played Cuphead then you definitely should, not just for the great game-play but for the wonderful music as well. As Always Keep on Listening.

With Christmas just around the corner and the winter chill in the air what better time then now to listen to some Christmas music. One of my favourite singers is Frank Sinatra and his version of Let It Snow is a song that makes a snowy Christmas to life. This is a song that you would listen to with your friends and family around a fireplace just enjoying company. With Sinatra's smooth vocals and a great band to back him up all combines into a beautiful vision of a snowy Christmas. As Always Keep on Listening.

All genres have evolved and changed throughout the ages bringing new and exciting sounds to listen to. Rock is just one of the many genres that has branched out into a bunch of different styles and sounds. From the golden age classic rock of Pink Floyd and The Beatles to the newer sounds of contemporary rock. Tick Tick Boom By The Hives is one of the many post-punk revival bands that brings back the sound of the great punk bands such as The Sex Pistols and The Ramones while also adding a new style of punk that is more contemporary. With its garage sound and banging instruments The Hives punk sound can get anyone's head banging to the beat. If you enjoyed the original version of punk then definitely check out them out. As Always Keep on Listening.

Music is a media that is ever-present, you can find it in movies, shows, and video games. One of the most fascinating, and sadly not fully released, is Music of the Spheres By Martin O'Donnell, Michael Salvatori, and Paul McCartney. Since it's the release of the new Destiny expansion Curse of Osiris I thought in commemoration for that I would share Destiny's music with you. This grand composition has not fully been released by Bungie because of arguments with the composers, but thanks to some great redditors there is a version of it that is as complete as you can get to the full thing. With its awe-inspiring vocals mimicking the style of Halo's music, and a wide breadth of styles ranging from song to song this piece is something that you should definitely check out even if you're not a Destiny fan. When mixing a track for a song and adding interesting effects one example of an interesting effect that is brought to mind is the pan effect. You can see it being used in some of the most famous tracks like Bohemian Rhapsody, or All Along the Watchtower. The song today makes good use of the effect by presenting two instruments in each ear that gives an interesting sound to the song. B.T.C. By Mojave Nomads Uses the pan effect to move the smooth piano into the right ear, and the more tin sounding guitar into the left ear. This gives the an exciting blend of both sounds combined together but separate at the same time. Techniques like this, and others should always be kept in mind because they make songs that more interesting. As Always Keep on Listening.

Rap can be a very diversive topic in music whether if it actually is music or just something else. In my opinion rap tells a story, like all good music should, whether it be about hardship, and struggle or even just about things you desire. The Power By Childish Gambino combines both the aspects of Raps looped style while also telling a story above the looped backing track that enhances the storytelling mechanic. This song combines to different versions of Rap. The beginning shows how rap usually is, and the later shows how Rap could be. By taking the song into a storytelling realm it diverts the usual rap channel and transforms into something more. Listen to any music by Childish Gambino is always an interesting look into Raps different phases, and faces. You should definitely check him out if you haven't heard of him already. As Always Keep on Listening.

When looking for new and interesting music there is so much to sift through when trying to reach the gems that are new and interesting musicians. One of those gems who hasn't been heard much is Altamira and their song Pretend Eccentric. With their smooth vocals and chill guitar this could be on any indie spotify playlist. All the instruments combine into a chill sound that enhances the light but powerful vocals. Most good songs are found in the depths of music players where no one has heard of them, so letting a little light shine on the gems that hasn't been heard yet, like this one, is something that everyone need to do. When a band has great music but it's not know that they have great music is a pity. One of those bands that has great music but isn't known is Rm. 101. One of their songs that I enjoyed was Said Too Much. With a guitar intro that sets the scene for the beginning of the  song bringing in an atmospheric feeling like floating in space. Once the song hits the vocals it brings us closer to earth and to enjoy the rocking song that they put together. midway through the song the guitar changes up its sound so its more grainy and hard. This contrast to the beginning of the song brings it closer to a rock sound than before while also dropping the vocals until closer to the end. The vocals at the end also change into a more rough sound to match the rock sound later on. This song provides a great blend of hard and soft styles combining into an interesting song that you should check out. With the Grammy nominations out there's one album that I think is a must listen for any guitar enthusiast or just anyone who enjoys good music. The album is called Mount Royal By Julian Lage and Chris Eldridge. With its duo of guitars through the whole album it combines both of the artist skills combining into a harmony that is only bright forth by many years of practice and dedication. Nominated for the best contemporary instrumental album the smooth intricate sounds of both the guitars working together make this album worth listening to and shouldn't be overlooked. As Always Keep on Listening.

With the cold weather coming up, or already here for some of you, you might just want to sit inside and listen to some good tunes to warm the soul. Sweater Weather By The Neighbors is a pretty popular song, with its catchy chorus, and simple but powerful music behind the lyrics floating on top providing a really immersive song. Whenever you put this song on you won't be disappointed, especially now since the weather is changing it adds another visual layer if you are ever out for a walk, and this song comes on. The Neighbors are on of the more famous Alt-Rock bands, and this song is one of the reasons they are so popular. The atmospheric feeling given through the vocals and the simple grounded beat behind it all draws you in, and doesn't let you go. If you haven't checked this song out then give it a listen. Everyone in some way has experienced tragedy, love, and loss. The Runner By Windmills expresses those feelings through a mix of enchanting guitar riffs, and absorbing instrumentation that layers on the feelings of anguish, loss, and sorrow. This pleasing instrumentation of stringed instruments, as well as using piano, ethereal guitar riffs, and synth that sounds like shimmering starlight portrays his own loss, that is very relateable, but also making it an absorbing song. With great melodies and heart touching lyrics that cant be passed up you should definitely take a listen to this song. As Always Keep on Listening

Mikaela Davis is a new artist with a very interesting sound that makes you think "Why haven't I heard this before". Davis' musical instrumentation has given an interesting take on the sound you expect from indie rock. She combines various influences such as psychedelic rock, folk, and pop to make a unique sound that can only be achieved through a mix of those styles. Her song So Called Friend incorporates the harp in such a way that it takes the guitars spot as a base for the sound. The song itself is a waltz  having the harp give the rhythm in a entrancing way, this is also supplemented by the ephemeral vocals provided by Davis herself. If you want to support new artist then I would recommend listening to Mikaela Davis. As Always Keep on Listening.

With December on the way and Christmas season rolling in the barrage of Christmas classics start to invade the music space. Now we all know the classics like jingle bells, and All I Want For Christmas Is You. But, Christmas doesn't have to be just repetitive boring songs. New and interesting Christmas songs have come out and one of them is called Heading Home By Julianna Barwick. This song is enevloping to say the least. By layering on the different instruments and voices giving it a not really classical christmas sound to it, but would be suitable for any christmas dinner as great background music. Today's music selection is bringing us up north to The Great North itself, Canada. The Barenaked  Ladies are one of the better music groups to come out of Canada. With their release of their new album it brings another 14 songs to listen, and enjoy. RoosterTeeth's own Matt Hullum produced one of the music videos on the Album, Lookin' Up , making it the fourth time RoosterTeeth has worked in producing a music video for the Barenaked Ladies. This Album has a mix of different vocalist, and styles to it making this album a assortment of great music to listen to. From the first song, Canada Dry, it shows their roots and Canadian heritage that brought them to where they are today. The whole album is worth listening to, and so far my favourite song on the album is The Township of King. With its acoustic finger picked guitar and layered vocals making a sweet harmony everyone should take a listen. Whether you're a Canadian yourself or just want to support a music video produced by one of RoosterTeeths own then take a listen to this album. As Always Keep on Listening.

Everyone has some kind of music that has impacted them on a personal level, whether its your favorite song you like listening to or just some song that you like to listen to when you're sad. One piece of music that has has a real impact on me is Liebesleid (Love's Sorrow) By Fritz Kreisler. It's a piece that can be played by itself on piano or as accompaniment to the violin. Each way this piece is played brings out the depth and loveliness to the piece. When listening to the piece that features the violin you can imagine yourself going through a whole story presented by the swaying melodies and sweet harmonies that give you a sense of calm, and peacefulness. Every time the bow draws across the string the image of sorrowful, teary-eyed soul is brought to mind through all the melodies in beautiful discordance that the light staccato, and well placed pauses evoke. Classical music is thought to be boring and not enjoyable, but this isn't the case as I highly recommend this piece for anyone feeling a bit sorrowful to enjoy. As Always Keep on Listening.

Want to take life a bit slower today? Well then, I've got the song for you. Nocturne By Julian Lage is a very smooth and harmoniously put together song featuring some amazing guitar playing by Lage. Now when I say Jazz some of you might think of old smoky night clubs, but Jazz has evolved from that image into something more and interesting than first glance. Nocturne takes you into a whole other world with its simple and effective method by using only drums, guitar, bass and a marimba. By adding the marimba it adds a whole other layer of complexity making the sound even more dream-like and entrancing. As the title of the song indicates this nocturne gives a vivid image of a starry night on the rooftops of a big city enjoying the lights above and below. Even if Jazz is not you're thing I highly recommend this song. As Always Keep on Listening

Indie pop is a genre that I personally like to explore because of all the new and upcoming artist that are playing new and interesting things. Cold Comfort By Leland Blue is one of those new and interesting artists that play what they like to call " music [that] celebrates freedom, youth, love, loss, and life." Their lighthearted vocals combined with the soothing combination of acoustic guitar playing rhythm and electric guitar riding above the rhythm with a grainy sort of texture to them that plays well with the idea of having something so cold be comforting. When the chorus does come around the vocals add to the contrast by having a bit of discordance to allude to contrast but not so much as to disrupt the flow of the song. That juxtaposing idea gives even more intrigue and depth to the song as a whole. If you're looking for some head-bobbing good tunes to listen to the this is the song for you. As Always Keep on Listening
