It's always a treat to be able to watch these in RT's player instead of having to visit youtube. Proper props to the Engineering team for fixing whatever was going on that prevented me from being able to view videos here.

A little bit odd that Yang is more mobile here than she was in the first three volumes. She dodges a lot more, and doesn't take things as straight head-on as she would later. Or maybe it was just because the Grim looked intimidating enough to push the message of "Caution" through Yang's goldilocks.

Good god i love Yang so much. Absolutely dominant presence, force behind her attacks, and a death stare that would strip a tree of it's bark. Has to be my #1 favorite character from the series, next to Krow and Blake, those 2 though, i can't decide.

I get the feeling that they neutered her combat style. I loved the short don't get me wrong, but she took down an Ursa with a mad combo in Volume 1. And this supposedly takes place only a couple weeks before the first episode. So, what happened? Why did Yang have such a hard time?

I guess. Still, the comparison between the two is still jarring. I understand the real life reason, the animators were very different. But in-universe, Yang just seems, slower, more methodical. That makes sense for her fighting style now, after the Vytal Festival, but why if it takes place before the series, why doesn't she still have her free-flowing, borderline primal fighting style?

If I remember correctly, Yang's semblance is that she gets stronger proportional to how much damage she's taken.
So, she could have taken the hit intentionally to get stronger, or not been strong enough prior to getting hit.

Man music and animation is just beautiful and perfect, but anyone else feel like the combat is just a little bit stiff. feels like it should be more fluid to me. might just be me to be honest. but i get the feeling that at the very least yang should be more on her feet and less jumping around, going in heavy boxer style, taking and dishing out shots, rolling the motions, keeping it fluid and moving. might just be the swordwork im doing now, but it seems like the pauses between them exchanging shots is just a little too long. lot of lost momentum, lot of missed oppertunitys to get in blows. other than that though, absolutely brilliant and can't wait to see more.

This might sound weird but I liked the fact that the Grimm seemed to be a bit stronger than the ones shown in previous volumes and that Yang had a bit of a hard time beating it. Might just be me but besides the big climatic fights I've never really felt like the characters where in much danger facing the Grimm because they just seemed so weak and ineffective. Shouldn't the greatest enemy of Human and Faunus kind be a little more.... threatening. Anyway, loving the new looks and am so excited for the new volume!!

    • Flatnose321

I don't think that grim is much more powerful than ones they've already fought I think it' because they haven't been trained at Beacon yet.

    • keginthenorth FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

Flatnose321 maybe, but I'd guess this not long before Beacon initiation and Yang handled the fight with the two Ursa and the Nevermore with a lot less difficulty.

It's entirely possible that they both got more experience before Beacon, I can imagine that Taiyang kind of freaked out about Yang going away and crammed in as much training as possible with Ruby tagging along.

I suppose because we're only ever seeing the Grimm when they're in combat with people specifically trained to kill them it has kind of skewered our perceptive of how dangerous they are but ever since the Red trailer showed us Ruby mowing them down they just haven't seemed that scary until this short.

The new animation and art has probably helped a ton too, they seem much more fluid animalistic which is awesome, big shout out to the CRWBY!

In regards to the seemingly weaker Grimm in Initiation, I feel it came down to the fact that Beacon is situated over the forest. Seeing that Beacon is the only line of defence between the forest and the City,  Professors (and I would imagine 4th year students for training purposes) would likely regularly go down to deal with the deadlier Grimm. I recall Glynda was surprised that a Deathstalker was as close as it was to Beacon.

    • keginthenorth FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

Badicalz that makes sense and although I'm not sure with the new animation style the one Yang is facing here might be a Ursa Major while the ones she faced in the Emerald Forest where minors, so that may be a part of the reason she struggled a little bit.

I'm know its been said that older Grimm are stronger but I wonder whether there is a difference in actual physical strength between younger and older Grimm of the same kind or is it just experience and intelligence.

Regardless I like a scarier enemy and if I was some chump living in Remnant I would want the creatures who may kill me portrayed in a way that would do them justice so keep up the good work creatures of Grimm! (Also between the Nevermore and Deathstalker I think the Profs need to step up their game stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye)

Remember that Grimm move in droves; no matter the 'man' facing them, a swarm of massive beasts can overwhelm anyone.  A powerful Grimm like an ursa major would be a survivor of many such swarms, and would technically by that fact alone gain personal identity and customize its fighting style.  In a sense, when she beat the bear, she both saved her sister and avenged fallen humans.

So wait, did Yang jump into the Ursa's jaw? She was literally blind siding it. She could've just punched it on the side of the head. I doubt the Ursa has that good of vision and reflexes and multi-focus to keep running at Ruby while also catching Yang without breaking stride

It was probably a spur of the moment. See saw Ruby in danger and was most likely more concerned about removing the treat to her sister more than anything else. To be fair though, diving into the Ursa's mouth had another advantage, it gave her enough power from her semblance to one-shot the creature in the next clash. I'd consider that a win-win.

    • nicus9 FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

      @apc9219

Yeah that's a possibility but Yang has always been the hothead/aggressive person. While she would definitely be protective of Ruby I think she'd protect her by beating the shit out of any threats as opposed to "taking a bullet" lol.

Plus she was apparently already low on aura since that was enough for her to lose it. Assuming they have a way to "feel" that fact, that'd be pretty risky which I guess isn't too far from her personality either.

Part of the training? Learning to fight against someone with an advantage? Or she knew she wouldn't use them and she was just wearing them because she always is. Purpose was to train Ruby in personal fighting. Yang already knows it, it is her entire fighting style.

  • Maeril FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

Difficult to judge, as a whole, from merely one fight but there is a tonal shift at play here. While well-composed it is a more subdued affair, for good or for ill, we shall see. Also, having Yang's projectiles (at least the first shots), arc as opposed to just being linear is needlessly fanciful for the character. Appropriate where Weiss is concerned but not Yang.

This is a definite improvement over volume 4 fight scenes! I'm excited to see more.

But... The physics when she launchers herself off the tree and her and the ursa connect punches and there's a shockwave, those physics are very wonky and unbelievable at the end. At the very least she should leave that encounter doing back flips and not front flips. A punch hard enough to cause a shockwave like that should not have so very little effect on her velocity (angular or otherwise), regardless of the momentum she had going into it.

    • dethicide FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

Wait.... are we really bring scientific fact into a show? Where there are monsters and people who use magic (semblances) and use gun blades like it's nothing? Kind of silly, no? I enjoyed the animation for the fight, definitely felt smoother and I think the shock wave was added for show rather than reality.

    • aterimperator FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

It needs to follow real world physics insofar as not following it makes it look fake and awkward. My criticism isn't "this is fake", my criticism is that this would look better (more natural to our eyes, more believable) at the very end if it followed physics a bit better.

While plenty of physics breakage is covered under the rules of the RWBYverse (and the suspension of disbelief that allows), the physics after the shockwave is not.

    A fantastic trailer!

Seriously the animation was awesome, the new models are so expressive, the revised Grimm are epic, the shock waves of power, so grand!

I find some really neat stuff in this trailer as well. Yang was the one who realized Ruby needed more help with CQC as opposed to her father or teacher and took it on herself to do so and what's more, she fought with tons of creativity and different strategies against the Grimm. She only 'relied' on her Semblance, when she actively took a blow for Ruby out of desperation, which I feel implies Tai was not accurate in his critique of Yang. Or in other words, scathing eyes & would be judgement came from Tai :D

    Also awesome music!

Although think about every Yang fight in volumes two and three. They follow the same formula to demonstrate Tai's point. Step 1 Yang overall nearly olds her ground, but takes a few hits. Step 2 Enemy gets desperate and lands a big hit. Step 3 Yang gets up and punches the enemy so hard they explode. Don't get me wrong, Yang is my fav character, but Tai was right, she leans on her power a LOT.

In most cases your semblance is powered by your aura, and if it runs out, you can't use it. But there are exceptions. Qrow's just quietly exists in the background all the time. Yang's is powered by the energy she absorbs when she takes damage in battle.

A heavy contrast, between Winter and Yang

Winter: I'm not always going to be there to save you
    Yang:I'll always have your back

Part of me wants to take that in the more literal term of it that Winter will be there for Weiss this season and Yang will fall short. HOWEVER, knowing both big sister's personality, I think both Yang and Winter said the exact same thing to their little sisters in their own way. Winter wants Weiss to be strong and independent while Yang will do whatever it takes for those she cares about. In the end, I think both will be there for their sisters, just taking two paths to get there.

Both showed something in Volume 3, Winter when alone with Weiss showed she wasn't just going to tell her what she should do, but that she supported her (in a highly Tsundere way I might add). Not just with her training, but dealing with her father. Winter realized Weiss would have to cut from her home one way or another, and that perhaps she may be made into an obstacle to Weiss' true freedom since Winter is a solider for Atlas. While in Volume 3, when Yang lost her arm, finally feeling vulnerable and exposed, she felt she could neither protect nor stop Ruby from anything anymore. Even losing to Neo like she did, I bet that didn't make her feel as wounded as losing her arm, her right hook. People are looking at the fact she let Ruby go as her not being there, but I think Yang believed herself to be dead weight at the time and the only way to truly help Ruby... was to let her go on her own. Now that she has strength again, I think she feels she has lost ground to make up for.

My predictions here would be that first off, Winter and Weiss will end up fighting one another first and foremost. Remember, Weiss ran away from home (and my guess though I don't think it's confirmed, she stole some cash to get around since her dad shut down her credit cards AND that's traceable if she used them) and thus would probably have a bounty on her. Even though she no longer is heir to SDC, she's still his 'barbie doll' to sing at whatever charity he decides (Go ahead and put Whitley in a dress and have him sing...I dare you =P ), thus she's a commodity (remember, this is what her dad sees her as). Winter, being a military solider, would probably be told to apprehend Weiss... however, I think Ironwood might have other plans than Weiss' capture as he and Jacques are not on good terms. With regard to Yang, while she was resolute in going to Ruby, I think she's going to get wind that her mom close to where Ruby is, and start to diverge slightly. Remember how she told Blake not to let her search control her... I think she may have been telling herself that. With the end of her search so close, the temptation will only grow stronger for her to pursue her mom instead of going to Ruby. However, at the moment of truth, I think she would choose her sister over her mom who was almost never there.

Even if she does go after Raven instead, I can promise you that it will be for nothing shy of rightful revenge and Yang won't rest until that traitor's head is shipped to Glynda Goodwitch's doorstep.

Yang: "Ruby, I promise you that I will set things right. I won't let Adam or Raven do to you what they did to me and Summer."

1 bite is all it took to deplete Yangs aura? She took a hit from a mech that smashed her through a concrete pillar holding up a bridge that was 4 feet wide, which takes 1400 tons of force. Their really inconsistent with their aura durability

this is young untrained yang, evident by the lack of the lack of an arm.

This is after a training match with ruby where she likely did get some damage already, and remember this is episode 1, maybe she hadn't trained her aura to the degree it was in the future

Also, though, it didn't necessarily deplete; we've seen in a couple fights (like in Qrow/Ruby vs Tyrian) that one's aura becomes visible if a battle gets intense enough, and also sometimes if they endure a significant, but non-lethal, impact. Most of the time someone's aura depletes completely, you can hear a sort of "powering-down" sound effect

Have you taken in account the grinding motion in the ground after the ursas strike? (As well as the trees which is a individual hit on her aura and the ground may have cheese grafted it a bit too) but we also don't fully know how far she went into the trees and ground, just something to point out.

Currently watching in 240p and those trees and bushes at the beginning are still looking real good.

Also, noticed a lock of cool blocking in the shots. Yang picking Ruby up with her right arm and using that arm to say she'll always have her back, but then hiding during subsequent dialog.

Evidently this lesson did not take, seeing as what happened to Ruby in Volume 2, where she got laid out flat by a regular White Fang grunt.

    ...

I guess she just couldn't get the Yang of it.
