Mortal Kombat was high enough on the list for me to not to care that I have no interest in the ones that followed.

Excellent question. I'd like to know as well. Especially considering how they stated from its announcement all the way to release that it was a complete re-imagining of the the first game and actually gave a LOT of backstory we never had before on Ratchet and had an AWESOME tie-in game based on the movie based on the original game, I'd say it's the best western video-game-movie ever made. It even went as far as including, albeit for only a small few seconds, the Rip Ya a New One!

Decent list but what about Kingsglaive? I loved FFVII:AC for the action and the game, but Kingsglaive was pretty solid all around.

Pretty solid list. I think you got all the decent ones down. Props for going for an obscure one for number one.

I'm pretty sure that doesn't count because it started as a comic strip.

No love for the Timothy Olyphant Hitman movie? I mean, it's not really 'true to the game' admittedly, but as a fan of the Hitman series....I still love the absolute hell out of that movie. Olyphant was a brilliant Agent 47. (The sequel/reboot/whatever it was was just pure steaming garbage, though.)

I don't understand why more video game movies aren't animated. And why the almost universally superiour animated ones are so often overlooked in favor of live action ones.

Bayonetta: Bloody Fate (2013) is basically an adaptation of the first game's story. Not as good as actually playing the game, but still worth a mention.

Video game-based movies have a lot of potential. The Pokemon series is pretty good, and so are a fist full of other TV shows based on the medium. (mostly anime from Japan)

Honestly if we're including animated movies as well, there's more than a few Japanese games that got pretty decent anime versions. The majority are prequels or sequels, rather than flat retellings, but there are some good ones. Personally as a big fan of the game, I feel like the Tales of Vesperia movie is one of my favorite video game movies I've seen......

Completely disagree on Advent Children. It's a fun movie for the action, but dear god is the dialog terrible and the majority of the characters boring and unlikable. The only reason people are fond of the characters in it is because of fond memories of the game itself, but if your only experience with them was with the movie itself, most people would be forgetting about them very quickly. The characters themselves aren't bad, but the Advent Children presentation of them kind of is. Still, it's a movie I happily rewatch every now and then for the kick ass fight scenes......

Yeah the live Resident Evil movies where awful.  CG's were more faithful to the original series.

FFVII:AC was the only movie on this list that I both saw and played the game for (I did see Prince of Persia, but never played the game and the opposite can be said of MK) so I would have placed it higher for that reason alone, but I have to agree with what you said about it. That Bahamut fight is on my Top 10 fight scenes list. The Sephiroth fight would be too, but Crisis Core.

#12 should be Doom if only for the 1st person scene as it's one of the most faithful call outs to the source material in a video game movie ever.

For some reason, I was more focused on Torian and Luis in the background of the intro.

There was actually a Mario animated movie in 1986, but it was only released in Japan, and it was hella more faithful than the live-action one.
