Sat down to eat some dinner tonight, after a long day at work, when I looked up and saw that I wasn't the only one having their evening meal.

A couple of humpback whales were right out in front of the house, bubble net feeding.  They were out there for a good half hour, before making their way down the narrows.

This was a pleasant spectacle to witness, especially after work was such a bust, I feel a lot better after having watched this.

      To be 'Merica!

I'm somewhat ashamed of myself for using that choice of word.

The tourist season is starting up, big cruise ships are coming in to port and spilling out thousands of people.  The bears are out harassing the school children, eagles are flying into power lines, and I'm behind a booth, doing my darndest to not burn and cut myself.

So things are going per usual.

There's a raptor center on location.

      oZHtgd.gif

No, not that kind of raptor.  It's an organization that provides care and rehabilitation for bald eagles and other birds of prey.

      DSC01391.jpg

This one here is named Sitka.  They have and owl, falcon, hawk, and another bald eagle in their care at this facility.

So we've got some pretty awesome stuff around us at work.

      DSC01395.jpg

Already have few of the tour guides at the sanctuary that want to apprentice under us, so we got someone else to sweep the floor and chop wood, yes!

Of course there's the knives too, we'll have the regular assortment of general utility and skinning, but we're going to be producing some bigger pieces this year as well.  Such as this bowie.

      DSC01418.jpg

It's a nice break from the regular and a chance to be a little more fancy.

Looking forward to new things to come.

      Take care!

Just as a single straw can be all that it takes to break you down, so can a single straw be all that you need to hold yourself up and keep moving forward.

I tried out a new recipe today that I got from a cousin or maybe they're a second cousin?- Anyway! -it's from a family member.  Haven't made one quite like this before, rather than just plain dough, pecans are crushed and mixed in to make the crust of the pie.  After that part was ready the final steps involved layering a blend of cream cheese, pudding, bananas, and whipped cream.

It turned out pretty good if I do say so myself, but the others that partook of this treat said it was really good and that I should make it more often.

That's still a thing. right?  Internet trends are so fleeting it's difficult to stay up to date on what's still considered relevant.

Anyway, I haven't done one before and I stumbled across an old photo while looking for something unrelated.

      Practice_1.jpg

From the long ago time of 2011, when I had short hair, a stubby beard, and sword fighting was still a regular occurrence on a weekly basis.

So there you have it, a throw back on a Thursday.

    • Chef Knife

Another custom knife order is done.

This time it's a french kitchen knife for a local chef.  The blade measures approximately 10in (25.5cm) in length, with a caribou antler handle, and pewter poured.  The blade was forged and the handle done by my partner, I did the finish work on the blade and made the sheath.  Normally we don't leave the differential temper line on the blade when doing a pewter pour, thankfully there were no failures.

Going through and cleaning out the house in preparation to move and came across some personal history.  My first "real" sword, made by me (with guidance from my dad) at the young age of... Well I don't rightly recall and that in itself might be telling enough.  The blade is a brace from a float plane, the guard a washer, and the handle is a deer antler.

Just one of those moments that stands out to me and I felt like sharing.
      Take care.

      Both crests are done!

      DSC01284.jpg

These may very well be available for auction at RT SideQuest.

I am very tempted to keep the last one, just because it turned out so darn nice.

      DSC01276.jpg

It's so SHINY! (which, consequently, makes it difficult to take a decent picture of)

There you have it, three pieces, old to new.

I just got my computer back after a week+ of it being at the fix-it place, so I'll post a journal of what I did while not hooked up to the internet.

I finally caught hold that ever increasingly elusive bug of creative inspiration and thought I would take a crack at improving a past project.

      DSC01237.jpg

Since completing Pyrrha's crest the first time, I've wanted to make another one just so I could do it better, so I decided that I'm going to make two.

      DSC01239.jpg

This time around I'm using a printout of the design for a template, last time it was done freehand and while it was similar to the source material, I wanted something more accurate.

      DSC01240.jpg

So with a dremel tool, a nibbler, and some file work, the top layer is all good to go.

      DSC01241.jpg

This go around I made the clip on the back from scratch out of a strip of metal off an old cabinet door.

      DSC01247.jpg

Once it's all soldered together (that was bitch to figure out, I could tell you...) here's a side by side; new one on the left, old one on the right.  Still got one more to finish.

      DSC01250.jpg

RT SideQuest does a charity auction right before RTX Austin, I was thinking of donating the two new pieces for that.

      That's all folks.

      Take care!

      Hello~
Now that it was actually pointed out in the OCC, do you and Jaron have similar names out of pure coincidence or was it deliberate? I thought about it in passing before, but thought I would finally ask at the risk of sounding like an OCC newb.

Deliberate, I guess. He's my brother.

By the way, the items you have in your journals look really amazing. Those are some really nifty skills you've got~

I just wanted to say, the things you craft (like, the swords and the viking kit etc) are really damn awesome! Also those drawings/sketches in your gallery are super rad!
I hope you have a good Valentines day!

Gotta give the friend request portion of your profile a thumbs up.....even though people don't ever seem to read those things.

No kidding, you'd think people would at least check out the profile of the person that they're trying to friend. Thanks for the comment too, I never check this section often because, well, I don't get comments.

Thank you! I've been smithing for about six years now. Currently the one thing I favor the most out of what I've made is my first knife, it's not the prettiest or the most well made knife, but I've held on to it and have used it ever since. This knife marked the beginning of a new chapter in my life and is not something I would give up easily.
