Byf is my new fish. He got his name from being a Blue Yellow Fish and a suggestion from Brian. Technically he is a Yellow Belly Damsel fish and he is the first little dude in my salt water fish tank. My Wife's family has had a salt tank in their house their whole life. After getting some first hand experience, I wanted to get my own. The switch really flipped when I started to understand that it's not just a tank with fish in it but, an entire ecosystem that is contained inside this little cube, Fish, clean up crews, corals, invertebrates . I saw a used tank for sell and it was time to strike.  Hopefully I can keep you guys up to date with the set up and taking care of the tank.

Here is the tank set up before any rock or water was put in.  It's the Aquatop 24 gallon cube tank with a 7 gallon sump underneath. Carrying 30 gallons of salt water up stairs was not the most exciting part of the process haha.

Here I am pouring in "live sand" after setting up the rock in a placement I liked. The "live sand" contains bacteria that help break down the waste product of the tank.  This process is necessary to begin the natural "filtering" of the tank and is called cycling.

The tank got super cloudy once we poured in all the water and started the pump up for the first time.

Final shot of the tank before we picked up Byf.

Let me know if any of y'all have your own tanks at home or if you have any questions about mine! Can't wait to share this little adventure with everyone.

    • SpaceX, Tesla, Travel. I had a good week.

Out of nowhere, last week ended up being full of new things for me.  I took a last minute flight out to Orlando to see the SpaceX Falcon Heavy launch.  Growing up I was obsessed with space but, this was actually my first experience of a launch.  With some family we set up in Jetty Park which was about 13 miles South of the launch pad.  It's such an odd feeling to see the rocket with your eyes fly though the air and then hear the sound about 1.5 minutes later.  If that wasn't cool enough we were only 5 miles away from the landing pad that both the SpaceX boosters landed at simultaneously.  Seeing 16 story tall Rockets dive though the sky and then light up to land softly is mind blowing.  I can't recommend enough that if you have the opportunity to see a rocket launch you definitely should!  Elon Musk put his Tesla into Space?!?! How cool were those pictures? He really is getting America excited about space again and its awesome to see the amount of attention it is getting.

Flying back into to DFW I took the opportunity to check out a Model 3 in person.  If you haven't noticed SpaceX, Tesla, Elon Musk has been my jam lately.  Having the opportunity to get into a Model 3 instead of just seeing pictures was great.  I'm hoping to get one at some point this year!

Anyone else feel like Elon Musk in a walking Tony Stark?  Did y'all see the Rocket launch coverage?

I hope everyone had an awesome New Years Eve!  My wife and I headed down to Houston and brought in 2018 with close friends.  We are pretty blessed to have a solid group formed in College and its always a blast to spend some time with them.

One new thing Jess and I are tying out is Whole 30. It is basically 30 days of no Dairy, Bread/Pasta, Butter, or sugar in anything.  I get how typical it is to start something like this right at the new year but, we were not about to try it in the month of December!

What did y'all do to ring in the new year?  Hope 2018 treats you all exceptionally well.

Kylo Ren stopped a blaster mid air in beginning of Episode 7.  You can call him emo, whiny, baby, angsty, and a brat, but if you are going to looked me dead in the metaphorical eyes and tell me you didn't feel the force in that scene, boy do I have some comments to type back to you.  Kylo is one of my favorite villains in any movie?  Maybe its just the cool mask and saber but hey, I like what I like.

Friday night I am scheduled to be with my wife and friends enjoying Episode 8 and I can't wait to see the Star Wars text scroll across the screen.  Being in the FX industry, These are the types of movies that get me going.  I'm in awe visually the entire film.  The fact that the whole nation gets behind these releases is so awesome to see!

What are yalls plans this week?  Midnight showings?  Are you going to risk spoils waiting til the crowds calm down?

I hope everyone is having an awesome Star Wars week!

    • Adventure Time in the Northwest

I just got back from a weekend trip to Portland.  My wife and I love to travel and the Northwest has never let us down. Best place we ate had to be Country Cat, The de-boned fried chicken was amazing.  Sunday we were able to drive out to Haystack rock and we were both in awe. The drive out there through the tree was beautiful and the rock itself is like a little mountain just dropped onto the beach.  Does anyone have any small trips coming up?  Where are you headed?

I feel like we have seen been treated to a glimpse into the future recently.  I watched parts of the Tesla semi event last week and I loved what was shown, are y'all excited about the future when you see big events like this?  I have fully bought into the future that Elon Musk has painted for us. My electric car drives me to work, it joins the "fleet" helping uber people around town while I help finish up RWBY Volume 10.  Then, as the work day comes to an end I summon my car to take me back home.  All of this of course being controlled on my iPhone that is just a solid brick of glass with no ports of any kind.  Hopefully Rooster Teeth pays me in only bitcoin at this point haha.  What are yall excited about in the not so distant future?

Follow up question to the fishhook in the leg: Did you catch anything else that day? (insert stick_out_tongue_winking_eye emoji)

      Answered: Nov 15, 2017

Sadly, I was the biggest and only catch out on the lake that day.

    • EricHVela asked Qholtz a question

How many stitches did you need for that fishhook in your leg a while back? (inserted confounded emoji here)

      Answered: Nov 15, 2017

HAHA Yes! I love that this is one of the first question I receive.  I escaped with 2 stitches and nice little scar.  I need to throw some pictures up here so people know the situation.

All kinds of shenanigans happen around here.  Recently, seeing Blaine, Miles, and Max in their Drag outfits was a bit of a shock lol.  Also, here in Animation, out of the members of the Tech team tech team loudly told a coworker "I think enough time has passed, so I'm am sorry for setting you on fire".  I hope they were referring to a D&D game.
