Well, I heard back from my new employers on Wednesday, and I'm due to start my new job tomorrow morning at 8. This pleases me.

Unfortunately, last night I was doing some TF customising (if you're not sure what I'm on about, have a look at my images and you may get a clue), trying to trim the canopy of a Classics Hot Rod figure with a scalpel. That transparent plastic's hard stuff; it'll snap pretty easily if you put enough force onto it, but it's a bitch to cut. My rotary tool would've made short work of it with a carborundum disc, but the tool mysteriously stopped working a few months back, so... I'm resigned to working mostly with the scalpel for the time being.

Anyway, I'm repeatedly scoring the plastic, gradually getting deeper, and hoping I'll eventually break through to the other side, when... I slipped and somehow (I have no idea how it managed to fly so far off course) cut a deep gash in my left hand. Needless to say I was not best pleased, especially at just past bloody midnight.
As it happened, my housemate had just been dropped off from a night out, and managed to call his friends back and get them to drive me to the hospital. About three hours of waiting later I got three stitches and was sent home.
So I'm now about to start my order picking job with a hand in bandages.

As luck (if that's the right word in this case) would have it, I basically just cut through the heel of my left thumb, and didn't do any damage to the tendons or anything. So aside from being restricted by the bandages and a little pain, I can still use my hand pretty much normally, so it shouldn't affect my work any.
So some relief there, at least.

I think I'll just stick to painting for the next few days...

I just got a phone call to tell me I got the job I was interviewed for last week, which pleases me greatly. smiley0.gif (<- See?) I don't have a start date yet, but should have in the next few days.

I'm looking forward to having a regular income again...

By the way, please don't forget FadingLight's campaign to help A City Serene at this difficult time. As of his last update, two members are still in comas, and the others are still in need of varying levels of surgery and physical therapy, and those medical bills aren't going to be cheap.

    • Touch MY Awesome Button!

      Ramrider

Inspired by a conversation with LadyRocki about our keyboards, I came to the conclusion that mine needed an Awesome button. But not just a standard key with an Awesome-themed sticker on it. Oh, no.

See, my keyboard is a Saitek Eclipse II, and it's already pretty awesome, not least because it's internally illuminated. It's loaded with LEDs which shine out from the sides, between the keys, and through the keys - which are cast in translucent plastic, but largely painted black, with just the text left for the light to shine through. Great if you want to screw with your eyes by typing in the dark. There's also a small button near the top which allows you switch the illumination from blue, to red, to purple. Or completely off if you're feeling dull.

So I picked a key, one which isn't frequently used, but does do something on its own (as opposed the never-used Alt Gr key) - which is the one that summons a right-click style dropdown menu. Might not be quite as Awesome as I'd like, but barring major rewiring and alteration of reality, I don't think I was going to work any miracles.
I sanded the top surface of the key (actually while the computer was still running - I like to live dangerously) till I'd got rid of the existing symbol and exposed more of the translucent stuff, then attacked it with the black acrylic and a fine brush. Then I sealed it with three thin coats of Klear (Future for you Yanks) floor polish.

      The result? See for yourself:

    • Might there be a job on the horizon?

      Ramrider

Blimey. After many months of frustrating levels of nada, I actually have a job interview tomorrow. As far as I understand it, it's pretty much just a warehouse job - picking and packing, that kind of thing - but at this stage (this stage being "broke"), I don't really care. If the interview goes well (and I don't hear back about the CAD job I'm after very soon), I'm jumping at it.

Fingers crossed, touch wood and all that...

In addition, I am now clean-shaven after I can't even remember how long with a full beard.

I know we've got threads on here about drugs and alcohol etc. But have you ever snorted (or otherwise ingested/imbibed) something that really was not intended to be taken that way?

My input is courtesy of a works' party a few years back where I was encouraged to snort vodka off the bottom of a wine glass; apparently it gets you drunk much more effectively (not that that's ever been a priority for me).

My reaction? It stung like a bitch. Never did that again... smiley6.gif

    • Do we have any customisers in the house?

in Forums > Do we have any customisers in the house? | Follow this topic

      Ramrider

...or at least customisers other than me. And if so, what have you done, and do you have pics?

I'm brilliant at coming up with and starting on customs (repaints and kitbashes both), but bloody awful at finishing them.

Hopefully, I'm starting to improve, though. I'm probably 80% finished on my Carnivac repaint (from Cybertron Snarl), and my Brawn (from Movie Stockade) just needs a little building work on the arm and some paint touch-ups.
I'm also working on repaints or 'bashes of Gears (Movie Longarm), Scourge (Cybertron Sideways, inspired by the Botcon exclusive), Warpath (Movie Deluxe Brawl) and Skyhopper (Cybertron Skywarp).

My pet projects at the moment, though, are my GoBot conversions.
So far for the Guardians I'm doing Major Mo (from Universe Silverstreak; nearly done, but needs a few touch-ups and chroming on the legs), Blaster (Energon Barricade; almost done but needs a new face sculpting) and Turbo (Universe Sunstreaker; close, but I've reversed his legs and he doesn't quite match up in vehicle mode; that needs sorting out).
The Renegades have Fitor (Classics Ramjet; structural work and most of the painting done, mostly inside bits left to do, plus the chromed thighs and jets), Cop-Tur (Armada Cyclonus; probably about half-painted, needs a new face) and Slicks (Classics Mirage; again, about half-painted - most of the black's done, but his yellow still needs finishing, plus chrome exhaust sections).

I've also got a Cy-Kill on the go, which will be pretty heavily converted from Energon Rapid Run, but I'm having trouble figuring out some mechanical issues with the head.

      So what's anyone else doing?

    • Gobots: the poor man's Transformers?

in Forums > Gobots: the poor man's Transformers? | Follow this topic

      Ramrider

I was just playing with a few of my old Gobot figures, and wondered what people's take on them was. I know there's a lot of people who consider them "Transformer wannabes", even though they debuted slightly before TFs, and at one point actually outsold them! I've heard several times from people who owned Gobots only because they couldn't afford real Transformers, or because parents or grandparents bought them assuming they were the same thing.

Personally, I think Gobots are great little figures in their own right. They're pretty sturdily built, and came in a much wider range of altmode types than Transformers of the era, including motorbikes, battleships, and submarine and limousines. And the fact that they were generally cheaper than Transformers could surely be a major point in their favour.

It was really the marketing that let them down; Tonka didn't promote their import anywhere near as well as Hasbro had, and the accompanying cartoon, despite featuring several of the same cast members (including Peter Cullen and Frank Welker) was far less accomplished; the character models looked the giant toys in themselves, and the characterisation was very poor, so there was little for kids to relate to.

I'm actually currently doing a few conversions, modding and repainting some Transformers (mostly Classics/Universe) into Gobots characters; I'll post pics when I'm closer.

But what do you guys think about them?

    • Fucking weather.

      Ramrider

This weather's making it damn near impossible to get any washing done and dry.

Just a few minutes ago, I wanted to put out a washload. It had been bright and warm for a good hour or so, and didn't look like changing any time soon. I checked the weather forecast - "sunny intervals". That's fine, thinks I; the sun might come and go a bit, but it's not gonna rain for a while.
Just as I'm about to hang out the last sock, this huge fucking grey cloud appears out of nowhere and makes with the thunder and rain.

      Fucking weather. smiley5.gif

[NB: For the record, I actually love the rain. Just not when I'm trying to dry washing.]

No he's not custom. I think he's made by the same company. I'm so addicted to those things. I have a handful of them just hanging out on my desk.

Yeah, my Animated collection is somewhat more modest. I have Lockdown, Starscream, Voyager Prime, a dismantled Ratchet (kitbash in progress) and two Cybertron Mode Primes, one of which is also in pieces. Main reasons I held off on them was because my spending money is limited, so I wanted to concentrate mostly on figs that could blend with my regular collection.

so i see you like animated do you agree with me that the show should had gone longer

Definitely. I didn't collect many of the figures (although I do like a lot of them), but I think the show is one of the best we've had in some time - probably since Beast Machines (which I did like, despite its weirdness).

That said, I'm also looking forward to seeing what the new Hasbro/Discovery venture comes up with.

I daresay I'll do that at some point. As I said in my post, I've a heard a reasonable chunk of it via a friend's car stereo, and I was pleasantly surprised.

In reply to your post in the Metallica thread:

I didn't want to start any arguing in there because there's a lot of people who really irk me, but about the moshing. It was really cool for System of a Down to do what they did, but you gotta remember that a festival mosh pit + Metal of any kind mostly = hurt people. Metallica is very much used to seeing their crowd go nuts from way back in 83 when they wrote Whiplash. Sure, they could have done something, but what could they do, really.

That being said, it much MUCH different when it's just a Metallica concert. There's tons of security everywhere and they have strict orders to pull anyone out who starts any sort of thrashing about. Even Lamb of God won't do the Wall of Death at a 'tallica concert, unless it's at a festival.

Give Death Magnetic a good listen, it's good. Still not quite as good as their first 4 albums, but still very very good. All Nightmare Long and That Was Just Your Life are my two favorite songs on the album.
