    • Pilot month is here

      ebregman Programming

Know when you have a secret and you whisper it to your friend because you’re so excited about it? That’s what this whole month is like for me.

You might have noticed it’s been quieter than normal around here. At the same time, you also might’ve noticed that what new stuff we’ve premiered has been really, really awesome. “Fully baked,” as we like to call it. That’s because we’re working hard to spend more time developing concepts before they start airing. We pride ourselves on being experimental, and that’s not going anywhere. But there’s no doubt that when we take our time, amazing things happen - just look at Nomad of Nowhere!

The result is a whole lot of crazy talented people have been working hard on new shows for you, and we’re finally ready to share a taste of them with FIRST Members. The pilots we’re airing this month are all exclusively for FIRST Members, but if we decide to do a whole season of a new series, that series might end up windowing to free-to-watch. We definitely want your feedback on these (in case you were planning to be shy about it...which you were not…), but to be clear: we’re not asking you to vote on what we make. As always we value your input, but if we just made what you wanted we’d only make Tuesday Night Game Fight.

So if you’ve ever thought about becoming a FIRST member, now is a good time to see what it’s all about and sample what you might get really soon!

I owe you a patch notes post, which I promise is coming. In the meantime, post some questions in the comments!

EDIT: A schedule would be helpful!

    • AHTV has more videos again

It was not our intention to have 4 videos on repeat...and we have no idea how it happened. I just added 374 more videos, and they're all under 30 minutes long in hopes of giving you a better chance of seeing the beginning of a video (a comment we see often).

Thanks for the feedback on these, it's been a huge learning experience!

    • The next linear channel betas will launch Monday 4.2

      UPDATE: They're live now!

      RTV

      AHTV

      FHTV

Thanks for helping make our RTV linear channel test a big success! You guys definitely showed us you'd watch a linear channel, especially with our new chat feature right there.

Our first test was a specifically programmed feed that included a live broadcast. To do that every day 24/7 takes more tech infrastructure that we're currently scoping out how to build. But to keep the tests rolling, on Monday we're launching 3 different linear feeds in beta on RoosterTeeth.com: FHTV will come to our site, and we're starting up a new AHTV for Achievement Hunter and an RTV for Rooster Teeth as well.

RTV and AHTV will run exactly the same as FHTV - they'll be a randomized playlist from the libraries of those YouTube channels (AH will include Let's Play). The one difference: RTV and AHTV will be unlisted on YouTube and only discoverable on RoosterTeeth.com, whereas FHTV will remain as it has been on YouTube in addition to being on RoosterTeeth.com. In all three cases, when you visit the linear feeds on RoosterTeeth.com you'll be using our chat. We'll all be stopping by the chats for those feeds, so make sure you check in when you can!

All live broadcasts will remain in separate streams, just like always, while these betas are up and running.

Have a great holiday weekend if you're celebrating! If not then have a great totally normal weekend when a lot of stores are closed!

    • It's All Happening: Programming Patch Notes 03.26

      ebregman Programming

With the new video product for web and mobile launching this Friday, this is going to be a crazy week. Here’s what we’re working on.

A huge congrats to the 2D animation team for a successful series premiere of Nomad of Nowhere! With Nomad and Master & Apprentice, the last 2 new series we’ve premiered have been our biggest series premieres since we first launched Camp Camp in 2016. And the year is just getting started…

New artwork is now posted for every series, so our focus now shifts to the long-promised reorganization and metadata cleanup project. We have a bunch of new database types to take advantage of that will make it way easier to browse our content library. Bonus features is one new thing, so we’ll be able to get all the trailers and BTS videos out of the series playlists. There’s also now a Movies type, which we’ll use for The Woods, Lazer Team, and potentially a few others. We’ll break up the crazy-big, disorganized series like Let’s Play (the series) and Achievement Hunter (the series); we’re making new series pages for a few different series that are currently buried inside of those. And to cap it all off we’re just a few weeks away from deploying a big metadata cleanup that will remove pesky HTML from descriptions, make sure all seasons and episodes appear in the correct order, and make sure all metadata fields fit into our new standards (i.e., no episode numbers in the video title, except for talk shows).

My team is also working on a follow-up to our RTV test from a few weeks ago. The goal is to get a beta up and running early next week, something that can be always on 24/7 for RT and AH, alongside FHTV. It’s still a beta because it won’t be specifically programmed in this iteration - we’re likely going to apply to the RT and AH channels the same setup that Funhaus is using, and embed all 3 of those into RT.com so you can use our chat. More to come on that.

OK back to work...enjoy LP Spring Break on Friday!

Thanks for tuning in on Friday for our linear TV test! You sent hundreds of thousands of chats, we had a ton of people watching for every single hour, all around the world. The worldwide thing is so cool for me - I know we have a worldwide community, but a traditional linear network is so specific to a single territory, so that's pretty unique.

I'll keep you posted as we figure out what to do next here. Til then what was your favorite part? Any shows you watched that you wouldn't have otherwise? New friends you made in the chat?

    • Testing a Theory (or: Everything That's Old Is New Again)

      Update @ 1:15 p.m. CT - New image below with up-to-date schedule!

You all know how much I love testing stuff. Well, two amazing things have happened this year that gave us an idea. First, Funhaus launched Funhaus TV on their YouTube channel, which has proven to be an amazing way to spend your day with the FH guys and gal (and dog) even though they might not have even posted a new video. Second, the new svod.roosterteeth.com/live went into beta, and you guys flocked to our new chat feature. That got us thinking…

What if there was an always-on campfire on RT.com where you could come by, interact with friends and RT talent and staff in a chat, and check out whatever was on TV?

Tomorrow we’re trying just that. Starting 3/16 at 10a CT (TUNE IN NOW!) and continuing late into the night, free for everyone to watch and with no commercials for the test run, we’ve hacked together a linear TV channel. It’s packed with videos we’ve posted in the last 2 weeks (including previews of some FIRST exclusives), a few other greatest hits from our library, and heck let’s just put Friday's live Off Topic in the middle. You can tune in any time you want and find something awesome playing, plus a few RT talent will pop in and out of the chat too.

The morning is all cartoons (because of course it is), including the premiere episode of Nomad of Nowhere, plus a little Backwardz Compatible. Whenever Off Topic ends, we’ll dive into more comedy and a few other talk shows like this week’s Always Open and RT Podcast. Late night be sure to check out free previews of the Funhaus Theater Mode premiere episode, and an AH Theater Mode too.

If this works...I’ll get to buy some cool software to help us make it work better. So please, help me get a new toy. Have fun! (Seriously, go tune in and check it out!)

    • LP: Minecraft #300 and SPOTIFY: Programming Patch Notes 02.18

      ebregman Programming

Welcome to the first monthly update from your friendly neighborhood programming and distribution team. Here’s what we’re working on right now.

First off congrats to the AH team for posting the 300th episode of Let’s Play: Minecraft, which officially puts them at a higher episode count than almost any TV show ever made. Someone manually did the math on this, but I checked myself and yes it’s almost 9.5 days of content back-to-back. In celebration of this milestone, we’re (finally?) going to break out Let’s Play Minecraft on its own series page on RoosterTeeth.com! We’ll keep you posted when that happens.

In other exciting news today, as of this weekend podcasts from Rooster Teeth and the Let’s Play family will be available on Spotify! This has been a long time coming, something we get asked about all the time, and I’m so happy we finally got it done. All the libraries are there, and new episodes will be added at the same time they appear on all other podcast listening platforms. Note - post shows are NOT available on Spotify and are still only available for FIRST members on RoosterTeeth.com. Here’s the list of shows you can hear now on Spotify:

      • Always Open

      • Beyond The Pine

      • CCTV

      • Class Of 198X

      • DEATH BATTLE Cast

      • Dude Soup

      • Filmhaus Podcast

      • Glitch Please

      • Heroes & Halfwits

      • Kinda Funny Games Daily

      • Kinda Funny Gamescast

      • Kinda Funny Morning Show

      • Kinda Funny Reviews

      • Off Topic

      • On The Spot

      • Rooster Teeth Podcast (Yes, including the Drunk Tank episodes!)

      • The GameOverGreggy Show

      • Try Hard Podcast

      • Twits and Crits

      • Twits and Crits: The League of Extraordinary Jiremen

Most of what we’re focused on now involves getting svod.roosterteeth.com running smoothly and looking good. This week we finished testing image safe areas for featured episodes on desktop and mobile/tablet, and now that we know the specs we can dive into re-safe-area-ing everything. Those images will roll out over the next month or so. As that finishes, we’ll dive into a reorganization and metadata cleanup project to hopefully catch any out-of-order episodes and also make better use of series pages for shows that have grown unwieldy (...like Let’s Play…). We’ll likely also be able to upgrade resolution on some videos at that point, with more on the way afterwards.

We greenlit a few pilots this month too! You heard about these from RTX Sydney: Achievement Haunters will be AH’s wild journey to discover ghosts in the scariest places in Texas. We locked our location this week and I am ridiculously excited. The Murder Chamber (working title) is modern take on a classic murder mystery game. Go into the future where you are judge, jury and guided by Jessica, a super crime solving network. We’re talking through the right way to release these so you can tell us if we should make more.

Last but not least we’ve been staring for hours at the full data wrap up from 2017, which like I’ve mentioned before is the most accurate viewership data we’ve ever had about RoosterTeeth.com. That’s already led us to some interesting new insights. It has reaffirmed to us how important a free-to-watch window is for our content, especially on a 7-day FIRST Exclusive window. And it’s told us a lot about how the new svod.roosterteeth.com can be a better place for our community to gather around content.

Oh and here’s something weird: ScrewAttack’s video Top 10 Sex Scenes in Video Games had a pretty big burst in traffic from organic Google searches over the past month. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This is the first one I’ve done, so tell me what I missed! What else do you want to see in these updates?

    • We're troubleshooting RTAA

      ebregman Programming

I was asked to post more about the fires we're fighting, so here you go:

We've had numerous users report playback issues on RTAA, but we have never been able to recreate the issue ourselves...until this week. Good news is it's an easy fix going forward! Bad news is the solution as of today is to deliver RTAA in 1080 instead of 4K. More bad news: we still don't really know what the problem is.

There seems to be an issue with the static footage we use to separate scenes in many episodes, but we've been unable to pinpoint anything specific that would cause it. The error was tough to recreate because it occurred only in specific resolutions, and our transcoder makes manifest files at multiple resolutions and serves you the best one for your device/connection/etc. When I watch one episode I might not be served the 1080 version, which has an error at 120s, so it might play OK for me but not for someone else. When we saw reports of last Monday's episode giving trouble, @mikequinn watched it at every resolution until he was able to recreate the issue.

Keep letting us know when you see playback errors, I will not rest until they are all fixed.

Hearing JP Barlow speak almost a decade ago was a formative moment for me. I got to listen to him and Vint Cerf explain why the very foundation of the internet reflected a simple, unavoidable, and formative truth: information wants to be free. I think about that almost every day. It inspired me to pursue a career in independent digital media, and it led me to work here at RT.

In his honor, posting a link here to A Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace. I hope it energizes you.

...increasingly obsolete information industries would perpetuate themselves by proposing laws, in America and elsewhere, that claim to own speech itself throughout the world. These laws would declare ideas to be another industrial product, no more noble than pig iron. In our world, whatever the human mind may create can be reproduced and distributed infinitely at no cost. The global conveyance of thought no longer requires your factories to accomplish.

A few months ago on Sept11 (currently Nov 17)

the youtubers Spaz Boys Comedy gave up on reaction vids for RvB & RWBY

Did I Pee On Rooster Teeth's Shoe Or Something?! " .

because they tried following the guidelines as laid out in Fanprojects faq and still got blocked.

      NOW,

what words of encouragement (or condemnation) do you have for Spaz Boys Comedy

for continuing to do on youtube what Murder Of Birds was commended & got famous doing?

Spaz Boys refuses to try to cheat teh system with GoogleDrive or inverting, speedAltering, or otherwise bypassing the takedown DRM systems of youtube.

THEY GAVE UP ON ROOSTER TEETH

... should they have not given up?

Without any reason from RT to not give up, why shouldnt they give up on RT?

RT fans tell them to cheat the system instead of following instructions... should they just try to steal RT Intellectual Property because using it within authorization terms simply doesnt work?

I appreciate you laying out exactly what the thought process was for extending the wait period 7 days instead of the 24 hour one that we have enjoyed. You seem like a very cool dude, and even though it is a little late, taking the time to address it is very much appreciated.

I would love if you guys would keep narrative shows like RvB and RWBY at a 24 hour exclusive to FIRST members, not only to because they are story-driven, but because they have always been available for everyone(mostly).

Thank you again for cutting out the bullshit and telling us why you guys did what you did, and if you do listen to us, I will be able to purchase a FIRST membership feeling like I am helping out my favorite community- driven company, rather than feeling like buying one is the way to watch my favorite shows without being a week behind.
