    • modern game beta

      FrankHaggar

Let’s make the ”Best” type of game the modern gaming era has to offer. To help us design our modern cash making game, here is Mr. Cashman, CEO of the gigantic video game company named ”Moneysoft” We see him having a meeting with his team to show them his latest and greatest plan to ” get them dollah dollah bill yo”.

Step one: Pick a series to Reboot

”Look guys (and girl), we don’t have time to think of a new IP here. I’m not made of money, the cash I have is reserved for getting coke... Moving on, I got the perfect series to Reboot: Prince of Persia.

The team looks at him with anticipation to continue.

” People loved those games! Well, most of them... The thing is, the last good game from the series came out years ago. So we got to have a good name for the game to make people get interested. It should be Prince of Persia: insert cool title. It should be something that people will think sound cool and hip, something mysterious  Anyone got any ideas?”

One of the designers raises his hand and says ”Maybe…Darkness Awaits?”

Mr. Cashman smiles bright and says, ”That’s perfect!

Step two: The story of the game

So the brilliant Mr.Cashman is now planning with the team on how the game will be designed.

”Okay, we all know that to make this game successful, we got to make the game appeal to as many people as possible. So how will design our main character? Anyone got any ideas?

A designer says ” Well we shouldn’t mess to much where he comes from and how he looks, so I suggest that we make him Persian” Mr.Cashman responds ” That’s probably a good idea, but we need to spice things up a bit. I know! While we can’t really have any terrorists in the game due to controversy, we should make it so his family has been a part of something dangerous, like a big organization. But what…?”

” The Illuminati!” A programmer shouts. ”His family should be heavily involved with the Illuminati, but he himself doesn’t know it. In fact…He’s an orphan, or so he thinks he is. His parents will have been killed by the Illuminati and he finds that out late in the game. ”

Mr Cashman decides that having Illuminati as the main antagonist of the game will be a great plan. ”You see all these crazy ideas on the Internet about stuff that the Illuminati does, this is perfect” Now we need to have something more to make our hero have a reason to attack the Illuminati.

An artist yells loudly. “He should try to save his wife from the Illuminati, but in the end he has to kill her. She should be a super hot stripper that can handle a gun(if you know what I mean). She will cheat on him with the Illuminatis head boss, Mr.Jakolvich.” The majority of the team cheers at the idea, yet the teams only female designer, does not approve of the idea.

”I’m not usually one to get all mad at stuff like this, but isn’t it kind of boring to have him rescue his wife? Isn’t that a bit degrading to female players? And if she has to cheat on him fine, but why does she have to be super sexy and all that? Does that she is a stripper ad anything to the story at all? Isn’t taking down the Illuminati enough to carry a story? What does it ad, that’s my concern.”

One of the designers quickly responds to her. ”Oh look who’s talking, the big party pooping FEMINIST. You always try to ruin everything for us guys. Ruining the fun for everyone. Why are you even here? Go get naked and protest about equal rights or something” But Mr.Cashman decides to throw out the foul talking designer instead.

Mr.Cashman answers to the shocked designer ”Look, I as a businessman understand that female gamers are very important, is growing in numbers and most important of all, has a lot of money. So I changed my mind. She will not be a super sexy stripper, however she will have a nice rack and have a sassy attitude to appeal to the male gamers. But you know, if we changed the part about a man saving his wife, we should slightly change something with the wife as well, so we with little effort will seem al cool to feminists and so on. Yet we will still appeal to the hardcore gamers. We make it so that his wife actually a big part of the Illuminatis plan and that she pretends to get ”kidnapped “. In the end, after the player defeats the Illuminati, he will have to make a choice either to take her apology and love back, or to get her in jail. I am so understanding to women!” The female designer, while not to keen on all aspects, accepts the decision.

      Step three: Gameplay and setting

So after Mr.Casman had a ”Coffebreak” the team is assembled to decide what type of gameplay Prince of Persia: Darkness Awaits will have. Mr.Cashman says, ” If we look at what is selling right no, we should make the game a first person shooter. But we can’t change the game to much as it is kind of well known. So we’ll make it a 3rd person action game with a heavy amount of combat and gun mechanics. Basically we take Gears of Wars shooting and cover system, takeke the hand-to-hand combat from the Batman Arkham game and baboom we are done.. But because we have the Prince of Persia, he will use his sables and swords instead. And guns  with arabian sounding names that in reality are just basic weapons.”

The team knows they only got 6 months to make the game so they agree with Mr.Cashman.

A designer brings up the setting of the game. ”I think the game should take place first in let’s say Iran in the 1980’s, where our hero will grow up in a tough environment where he himself learned to survive. That will be he first half of the game. Then he will find out one night that the Illuminati has ”Taken” his wife away to New York, and then the later half of the game will take place in the modern balls to the wall bad neighbourhoods of New York. The final battle shall be between him and his parents, that have as previously mentioned been apart of the Illuminati the entire time.”  Mr.Cashman approves of the idea. ”Brilliant! And we can have it so when he returns to Iran after defeating the Illuminati he has some unfinished business, as dlc! Speaking of which….

Step Four: Downloadable content and marketing.

The team’s last step and the most important, is the step that will make the most money of them all, Mr.Cashman knows this very well.

”Alright, you know the drill. We take ordinary weapons and re-skin them and ad Arabic sounding name to them, then we will  have them as a pre-order bonuses for Gamestop. Then if you pre-order on Steam you will get a 10% discount + a goofy hat for TF2 to go with it. Is there something I forgot?”

A designer points out the idea of a season pass. Mr.Cashman smiles all so bright, for the wrong reasons.

”How could I have missed that? Ofcource, we must have a season pass. In reality they will only save about 2 dollars buying the season pass instead of buying the separate content individually. I also got another great idea. Let’s say someone’s wants to unlock a cool weapon yet doesn’t have the skill/patience to get it. Well you can with REAL MONEY buy it instead. In fact, all upgrades for weapons can be bought instead of hard earned and difficult to get in-game points, buy it for REAL MONEY. I AM A GOD”.

A programmer asks how they will market the game. Mr Cashman has the answer.

”We will first create a rumor ourselves, then letting all the gaming sites building up anticipation for it. Then on a big convention like E3, we will announce it with a trailer that shows little to no gameplay. Gameplay testing of it will be restricted to specific gaming websites that have taken braids to say positive stuff about it.”

The meeting was finished and 6 months later, Prince of Persia: Darkness Awaits was realised. It received decent reviews and sold surprisingly well, made fans angry and most importantly made Mr.Cashman even happier (by that we mean richer).

I made this little story to mock not only the industries shady practices, but also ones who generally believe that ALL gaming companies act like this. That some people believe all of modern gaming is terrible. That ”back in the day” games were made not for profit. I am sorry to break your dreams, but companies are created to make said money. There has always been sneaky ways to get them, its just different now. But what I think is important, is that we as consumers can tell companies that we do not want these kinds of practices.

Hope you had fun reading this sarcastic/comedic work, please give me your constructive and positive comments.

    • Frank`s Thoughts Episode 8: Valve has an approved semi-monopoly?

      FrankHaggar

Hope you enjoy this blog, feel free to leave a comment and all that stuff.

      Info on Steam

Steam for those of you who don`t know is an online service that mainly provides access to a large number of games and now other types of software. Steam is a cloud based service, making it so that if you buy a game on Steam or activate a code from a physical copy to the platform you can play it wherever you go were you van access a computer.

The saves on most games however are on your computer, but games like Team Fortress 2 also have cloud saving.

You must however have a internet connection to launch steam, but you can set certain games to offline mode so that you can play single player games without always online DRM (one that actually works really well at least).

Ever since 2003 Steam has been available to the public and over the years has grown to become the biggest digital game service of all time, controlling over 70% of the market. Steam is run by Valve, one of the most respected companies in the industry.

They have created titles such as Team Fortress 2, Counter Strike, Half Life, and Portal. They encourage user created content and mods, giving a great sense of freedom to the players using things such as Gmod and Source Filmmaker to spread the IPs around with other way of entertainment. Hell TF2 is driven mostly by the community and Valve knows this.

Valve continues to make gamers happy

Let´s continue with the community aspect

Through the use of Steam Greenlight, the community can vote for what games can come to the platform. This however can backfire as games similar to other can be dismissed as "clones". I think that this concept needs a bit more polish but there have been some cool games that has come out from it.

With the Steam workshop, players can create and vote for new items to TF2 and the creators get a bit of the money if Valve picks it up (as TF2 didn´t already have enough hats hehe).

The Steam sales are awesome, having great deals on games and DLC for us to enjoy. You can even vote for which deals you wanna see. Again this can backfire as certain games just keeps on getting voted on while others get ignored....

How many times was this voted on the Daily Deal on on the Winter sale....?

      The meat and potato

So Steam is a great service that provides great games and community interactions and a safe place for gamers to go to ( hacked once but was taken care of quickly). But heres the thing,,,,

Valve has a monopoly over the digital gaming market both on PC and on Mac. A monopoly is never a good thing.

We need competition so that we as consumers can get to chose more and the companies will have to become even better at providing the service. McDonalds has Burger King, Apple has Samsung etc.

Steam has Origin? I´m sorry but that platform isn´t really taking off, as not many games are on it, and EA has a more how should I say it "watching look" on their consumers. The next thing would be Green Man Gaming that is slowly growing but hasn´t become as big of a competitor as needed.

A lot of the games also has Steam keys support so it kinda backfires. Don´t get me wrong It´s awesome that you can buy something on on site and then play it on another service but I have a weird feeling that it will hurt those 'other' sites.

I love Valve but if we look at a similar situation, then Nintendo is a good example. They had monopoly over the home console market for a long time and having the third party developers in the palm of their hands. Then Sega came back with the Genesis/Megadrive and we got some amazing games from that competition.

      It sure does.

Now we're lucky Valve is the company they are. Theres a reason why the have such an amazing reputation both from their games and company practices. Maybe we don´t need a Sega here... But I don't think it would hurt if we got at least one service that could really rival with them. The Steam Box will see them going in the console race, so maybe through that we could get some competition.

      Or I´m an idiot.

      Haggaring Out.

    • The Topic of Hate, Haters and Criticism

      FrankHaggar

I guess I should start this out with my personal thoughts on what I really hate and why I hate it. Truth is, I often call things stupid, dum or just annoying. There are very few things that I really do hate. I don't bother with things like legit hating on artists or other forms of entertainers unless it's something trully outrageus. So no, I don't bother anymore getting angry at let's say Justin Bieber. I don't see a point in it. What I do hat is when for example peoples rights are in danger. I hated what SOPA stod for, I made sure that people around me that I did not aprove of ANYTHING that censors freedom of speech. That I feel deserved hate, becasue it would not only affect me, but others aswell and generaly be something negative for the future as a hole. So now you prabobly have a better understanding of me as a person to what I feel is worth "hating" on.

    • Frank's Art: Some banners I made and a small update

The first banner I made for g1 The Guardians blog series "Favorite Remixes of Songs I Love". I noticed he didn't have anything for his series so I decided to make it as a present. I chose the Super Metroid and Secret of Mana pictures because two of the episodes were of songs from those two games. I thought his avatar fitted naturally in aswell

. I tried to match the color of the text with backgrounds, some lighting effects and also added some music notes. I thought it turned out pretty good, and The Guardian liked it to.

I wanted to try out the copy ability in Photoshop so I used some picture of wooden planks and copied it to the text. I did the same with backgrounds with some trees and added one of his Twitter logos. I thought it turned out good. While he hasn't  responded he did respond positive to my design of him in my comic series "The g1 Freelancers". Behold a rough sketch!

It´s Woodyman! I gave him a Timesplitters hat, a buff body and arms along with some wooden bots and face.

This banner was made for me and ExplodingLobster list as The Euro Duo. I think this is my best work of a banner so far. I thought the different colors and designs of the text worked out great. I think the grey background matched pretty well and the respective favorite classes on there respective sides. It got that Team Fortress 2 charm I was aiming for. Also Sandwich.

With this banner I used the copy ability for the text again. The colors actually comes from a Japanese sunset and the effect worked pretty well. I then have Mount Fuji in the background with a slight layer of red and some black outings so it would pop out. Gaijin also liked it which I'm happy for. Hope he uses it one day for a blog.

I hope the next episode of "The g1 Freelancers" will be finished  before next weekend. I will go to Austria on a skie trip with internet for the phone atleast. That's gonna be a lot of fun. The week after that I will have no internet untill the end of the week since my class in School are going to Poland to see the places were the concentration camps were. Not so fun, but very important. I will try to make more music blogs but my main priority is to work on Freelancers. Leave you thoughts on the blogs in the comments, both good and constructive.

      Scout

For my Scout, I wanted to make something that looked cool, has a theme to it and wasn't so obnoxius yet still had persanality to it. So I put together my "Bankrobber Scou" The hat is a Fed-Fighting fedora, painted in the color called "Radigan Conagher brown". I thought it looked the nicest of all the painted variants and I wanted to have some kind of color instead of just the regular one.

I then wanted to expand the bankrobber theme to it and thought that the misc called  Digit Divulgers would fit pretty well. If you are a bankrobber, you prabobly wanna have some gloves that not only makes you tough, but protects your hands and eases it when you take your bag of cash with you.

For the second misc it was really a no-brainer, the Dillingers Duffel were submitted as a set and that it's a backpack esqe misc helps the set look interesting. It's a duffel with man-co cash in it and I chose to have it unpainted since I liked the mre brighter tone of it.

How many times was this on the voted on on the Winter sale....?

So Steam is a great service that provides great games and community interactions and a safe place for gamers to go to ( hacked once but was taken care of quickly). But heres the thing,,,,
Valve have monopoly over the digital gaming market both on Pc and on Mac. Monopoly is never a good thing.

We need competition so that we as consumers can get to chose more and the companys will have to become even better of it. Mcdonalds has Burger King, Apple has Samsung etc.

Steam has Origin? I´m sorry but that platform isn´t really taking off as not many games are on it and EA has a more how should I say it "watching look" on their consumers. The next thing would be Grean Man Gaming that is slowly growing but hasn´t  become as big of a competitor as needed.

A lot of the games also has Steam keys support so it kinda backfires. Don´t get me wrong It´s awesome that you can buyt something on on site and then play it on another service but I have a weird feeling that it will backfire.

I love Valve but if we look at a similar situation then Nintendo is a good example. They had monopoly over the home console market fo a long time and having the third party developers by their hands. Then Sega came back with the Genesis/Megadrive and we got some amazing games from that competition.

Now were lucky Valve is the company they are. Theres a reason why the have such an amazing reputation both from their games and company practices. Maybe we don´t need a Sega here. But I think it wouldn´t hurt if we got alteast one service that could really rival with them. The Steam Box will see them going in the console race so maybe through that we could get some competition.

      Or I´m an idiot.

One of the first games I bought on Steam, Magicka is a fun top down action game controling wizards with the power to combine the elements. It has a great sence of humor, 4 player co-op and a great atmosphere. Evil forces has arrived and you have to stop them. Tight controls with a fun premise of combineing powers. Or you can make a level 5 fire attack and burn your enemies. That could work to(arcane and fire makes a great lazer)

So why haven´t I finished it?

Well first of all my old computer couldn´t really handle it so it laged and as hell and glitched out more often then not. Then I finally got a new computer and......it didn´t worked. For some reason it did not want to work, something that happend to a lot people. What did you have to do? Install a program again (xnaffx 31).

So I got it to work! I can enjoy this fine adventure. Thats quite hard. Yes this is one of these games that to me is hard, but enjoyable. I have come further into it now and I hope me and g1 ExplodingLobster can finish this great quest. Overall a fun and challenging game thats more fun with friends. Damn it ExplodingLobster, we got some Goblins to defeat!

The first Rockstar made game I bought back in the Steam Atumn sale, Max Payne 3 is one  of the more darker and serious games I have played. You as the down beaten hero Max Payne, has found a new job in Brazzil, São Paulo to be exact. He is a bodyguard for a bunch of richies that mostly party and drink.

Everything goes well....untill a bunch of them get kidnapped and you gotta save them After that it all goes downhill and you get to experience a 3rd person action game starring Max Bad-Ass Payne. The game is a bit linear but has intresting settings, good controls and ofcource bullettime which yes is very fun.

I however....suck at it. Damn I found this game hard. The ai is really good and is overall pretty hard. It´s nice to see a big game dare to have a challenge. I play on the normal difficult setting to. I put this low on the list since when I do try to come further into it I usally come a bit step longer. Let´s hope it continues to be fun. Max is also a very fun character and I want to see what adventures will happen to him.

Just wait Max, things are about to get even worse for you.

A missunderstood game indeed, player get to experience a fun 3d platformer starring Mickey Mouse(NO WAY). The story is about Mickey who must save a land called Wasteland, filled with forgotten cartoon charaters.

It´s actully he who has brought the terror to the world and must now fix it and make the king, Oswald the lucky Rabbit his friend. But Mad Doctors, blobs and poison isn´t his greatest enemie. It´s with the power of painting and thinning that our hero must defeat:

      The Camera and Lighting!
Yes like many other the camera was a bit annoying to as it would at times get me killed simpl because I didn´t see what was going on. Something which is really bad since a lot of inviroments are very dark. Look at this for example

Black and dark with a sence of grey.

Jokes aside, it´s a fun game with a very nice soundtrack atmosphere and I felt the game simply got overlooked. I suggest picking it up. I need to man up and continue through the darkness to see the light. This game does deserve it. I feel like people were a bit to hyped for it and when the final product got out to the public it wasn´t quite like we thought. It wasn´t super dark or really cartoony, it was a mixture of both that I actully enjoyed.

This is a good example of The Mayor( that is what i´m calling myself in third person) of frustration over gameplay.

Now I sat down infront of my Megadrive and came really close in the game. I was feed up but I was determed to beat it. Then I got to the the Sky Chase Zone. All my gamer skill suddenly went broke and I died. I haven´t picked it up since but I really want to. I guess one day I just have to return and finish what I started.

Sonic 2 is also a really good game I might ad with great controls, fun mechanics and an amazing soundtrack. I´m glad I got a Megadrive from my Uncle to borrow and getting to play this game It´s an exelent platformer that could and even does rival Nintendos fat plumber. The levels are creative and made me interested through out the game untll I failed.

Now if Sega of Japan could stop takeing down Youtube vids with Shinning Force in them even if it´s just people talking about it would be nice....

Another game I found to be quite challenging in the gunfight department, I really want to play more of this epic adventure called Uncharted 3. Having it almost a year I have sort of played this in dozes and come prettty far in it but I really want to just find the time to sit down and beat this game, hopefully before The Last of Us arrives.

You control Nathan Drake, the "Hero" . Nathan is actully a villain. Think about it. He kills so many people to get a freaking little treasure and drags with him his friends almost forcing them into danger. Sure the bad-guys aka other treasure hunters are more brutal but he is not far behind.

But guess what? Thats actully really fun! Being the "good guy" while still kicking brutal ass. Video games! I feel this was Naughty Dogs intention as it makes Nathan more thn just a hero.

Poor Sully and Elena......your all in Nathans greedy plan.

Gameplay wise it´s a fun 3d action adventure esqe game with some pussles and climbing to it. The look is reminicent to Indiana Jones as it is the real world but still looks a bit unusual. I better just sit down and contiune this fine adventure.

There is a simple reason why I haven´t beaten this game yet. It´s really long! Darksiders 2 is an amazing action rpg advenure game controling Death who is on a mission to save his brother War.

The combat in this game is really satisfeing, fantastic music and is the best game I played in 2012 and in a long time. You become Death almost thanks to the spot-on controls.

It´s a dame shame it didn´t sold so well and THQ died. Luckily Crytek bought up 35 ex Darksiders developers but has no interest in buying the Darksiders license. Someone should pick this up and continue the series. For all platforms btw, as everyone should be able to play it.

Death is a very agille character yet he has a lot of power to him. In the games exxelent rpg level system you can upgrade your scythes that is your standard weapon and your second weapon which can be claws,Hammers etc.

I think i´ll get around to play more of this soon but since the game has so much content it´s gonna take some time. Thats fine by me. Only thing slightly bad is that th camera can be weird at times and the quests can be a bit samish. Other then that, an amazing game thus far.

The art direction is fantastic having an apocolyptic vibe that can still have color to it. Death is also a very likeable character, being a classic anti-hero wth a very sarcastic look at things but isn´t a bad-guy. After all he is trying to save his brother. By any means possible.....Hammer Time!

I was never that smart as a kid and when I got my Gamecube when I was 8 years old I din´t understand certain things in the game so I never really played it that much. About a year ago I said to myslef I would try to get further into the game.

I could finally appriciate the game since I´m not a stupid kid anymore! The journey thus far with Link has been very fun and I want to see what happens in this action adventure game. It looks great and espacilly sounds great having music and sound effects matching the tone of the game quite well. Controls are also solid and it´s fun to slash with your mighty sword.

I feel like I have to play this more since as a kid I never gave it a chance and I feel like I owe it to my parents for giving me it with the Gamecube to beat this game.

I can´t find more detailed wors other then I wanna exlpore the seas and play more of Wind Waker.

It´s time for me to experience what Zelda does best. Making you go on an adventure. If I would ever get stuck I could just ask my friends so I have no exuse not to beat this game.

The first DS game I got is also one of my favourites! This game had it all! Awesome platforming, great level design, music and variety! Also babies......

Having diferent kinds of babies was a great idea as each baby had uniqe powers that went very well with the gameplay. Baby DK could climb vines, Baby Bowser shot fire etc. It added a nice touch to the overall experience of it.

The game looks great too having nice sprites with a lot of colors. Sound design is great with verything sounding like it should.......God damn baby screams.

So why have I not beaten this game yet? This is a case of when The Mayor is to mighty to look at a walkthrough and is stuck at a Puzzle level.

I have no idea what to do and I usally don´t play handheld games to much and I forgott about it. It´s a shame since I would say it´s´one of the best platformers I have played. Oyeah Yoshi is in it and stuff........Cause I rather do like Yoshi. Who would have guessed? Now when I thin about it, why isn´t Yoshi in my name? Owell.

But now I wish to beat this game and triumph over the Puzzle! You can´t stop The Mayor!

I´ve never been the biggest rpg guy since I found grinding a bunch and then go beat a boss and my argument as a kid: You can´t really avoid the bad-guys attacks. Now ofcource this how the games are designed and I rather do like Pokemon since....It´s Pokemon.

Then I picked up this game a few years ago. An rpg with Mario, Luigi and Bowser? You cab avoid the attacks to and have to use timing? Sign me up! You could also do this in the Papper Mario games and other Mario rpg games but I wasn´t really aware of them.

This is by far one of the best games I have ever played. All the characters has a major boost in character as Bowser here is really fun! He´s grumpy, funny and evil with a more fine tuned aditude. Mario and Luigi are expanded upon with out saying any real dialog but through the animation and situations. The story is that Peach gets kidnapped.....but not by Bowser! I won´t spoil to much other then Fawful, the bad-guy from Super Star saga is back and you gotta stop him. He really is as cool of a villain as the internet says.

The idea that the Mario Brothers are inside Bowser is pretty funny and this goes very well with the gameplay. It also has a more connecting naritve then regular Mario games whch I really liked. Rpg elements are fun to with lots of gear and badges and the combat which is based on hitting the buttoms or using the touch pad at the right time makes for incaging gameplay.

Heres the thing. I´m stuck at a boss. A really hard boss. I have yet to beat it. Simple as that. I have to man up.

I am ashamed. I have not beaten this masterpice in gaming. I have come to not last but second last stage. The last world is really hard atleast for me, and I really want to beat this game.

Super Mario Bros 3 is a platforming game with great levels, controls, creativiety and more. It´s a classic for a reason. The game isn´t perfect no but it´s defenetly a 9/10.

I am a pretty big Mario fan and that haven´t finished this game is a damn shame. I guess I can´t explain it better then I need to beat Super Mario Bros 3. It is a game that I have gotten so much ennoyment out of it I owe it to see the final ending by myself.

And thus my list is done. I own none of the music or pictures.

      Haggaring Out.
