    • Does The Legend of Zelda need a reboot?

Since reboots are all the rage these days, it's gotten me thinking about some series' that might need one, and one of those that came to mind is The Legend of Zelda. Now don't get me wrong, I loves me some Zelda and no matter what Nintendo does with the series, I'll still probably enjoy it.

However, with the Zelda timeline being officially released after years and years of silence, and with the recent release of Skyward Sword revealing the origins of Hyrule (among other things), could now be the right time to leave the current set of games in their own "reality" and start an entirely new series? Similar to the way Mega Man X was in some ways a reboot?

I don't know, I'm pretty much just thinking (typing?) aloud, but it would be interesting. Nintendo has shown that it finally wants to make more cinematic games with the release of Metroid: Other M and Skyward Sword, and what better time to continue that trend than by putting a cap on the first 25 years of the series and starting fresh?

Again, just thinking aloud. What do you g1's think?

    • Hyrule Historia Being Localized

Yes! The fabled item, Hyrule Historia, which fans of the The Legend of Zelda series have been begging for, is finally being localized and being published by Dark Horse Comics no less.

The item is not just an art book that covers the entirety of the franchise (excluding the CD-I games), but there are also snippets of a never-before-released manga , and a (never would have imagined it possible) timeline! Yes a timeline, which not even die hard fans thought Nintendo would ever go for after Shigeru Miyamoto himself said “there is no timeline”. Times sure have changed.

Diamond Book Distributors has listed Hyrule Historia as part of Dark Horse Comics’ January 2013 release schedule, priced at $34.99, with a specific date of January 29, 2013. Here is the full product description:

Dark Horse Books and Nintendo team up to bring you The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia, containing an unparalleled collection of historical information on The Legend of Zelda franchise. This handsome hardcover contains never-before-seen concept art, the full history of Hyrule, the official chronology of the games, and much more! Starting with an insightful introduction by the legendary producer and video-game designer of Donkey Kong, Mario, and The Legend of Zelda, Shigeru Miyamoto, this book is crammed full of information about the storied history of Link’s adventures from the creators themselves! As a bonus, The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia includes an exclusive comic by the foremost creator of The Legend of Zelda manga — Akira Himekawa!

      • The Legend of Zelda franchise has sold 68 million copies since the release of the first game,
with the original Legend of Zelda being the fourth best selling NES game of all time, and The
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time holding the record for the highest reviewed video game of all
      • Covers the full history of The Legend of Zelda franchise.
      • With an introduction by game designer Shigeru Miyamoto.
      • Includes the official timeline of The Legend of Zelda games, never-before-seen concept art, The Legend of Zelda manga, in-depth information on the making of the The Legend of Zelda franchise, and art by some of the most storied concept artists in video games.

    • What if Zelda was the villian in the next game?

This is by no means a well thought out thesis or idea, this is just a spurt of the moment thought that came to me while watching GT's recently released Timeline video on the Zelda series. According to Skyward Sword the goddess Hylia sacrificed her divine powers to save the "humans" by becoming reincarnated as the mortal Zelda, which explains why each subsequent Zelda has divine powers and is tasked with protecting the Triforce and Hyrule.

Now, what if, somewhere down the lineage, a Zelda started to resent the fact that she was tasked with such heavy responsibilities? What if she was tired of being the virtuous guardian of Hyrule and decided to turn on her people? Maybe have her turn heel (wrestling terms!) halfway through the game, so the person you were working with up until then (and for the last 25 years) suddenly became your main opposition. Again, just thinking out loud (typing out loud...?), but what do you g1's think? I think it would be a very interesting twist in the Zelda mythos and would make for one hell of a narrative to experience as Link.
