    • Super Paper Mario (Wii) review by Jnes3

      Jnes3

Mario and his friends, old and new, are on a journey to stop Count Bleck before he uses the Chaos Heart to open an inter-dimensional rift known as "The Void", which will eventually engulf the entire universe !

      Story

I've got to say, for a mario game, it is amazing ! it's pretty original and it is very charming with it's humor and tone, there are some people who think that the game is too text heavy, in which I half-agree, since there is some unnecessary narration every time you enter a chapter or finish it, but as for the rest, the story is very well told but with a few plot-twists that can be predictable very easily.

      Gameplay

Super paper mario plays just like a mario platformer which you only use the wii remote sideways, but the gameplay also has a lot of new things, the game is a mixture of platforming with RPG elements, in which you can earn XP (which are named "Points") by defeating enemies, use coins to buy items, etc. But there are also some new gameplay mechanics included in the game, such as some new characters named pixls where each of them can be found each of them have an ability to throw or destroy obstacles, become tiny, defend against enemies, or to progress through a certain chapter. But there is a certain pixl named Tippi, who is also a main character, which will be your main pixl (meaning she will always be with you), where she can allow you to use the Wii Remote pointer to highlight and read the descriptions of items and enemies, or spot any hidden objects. But of course, the new gameplay mechanic that makes the game unique has to be the ability to turn the game from 2D to 3D which allows you to maneuver around obstacles impassable in the 2D perspective, or find items, enemies, etc. However, you are limited in a certain timer when you're in the 3D perspective and if the timer runs out, Mario's health will be depleted.

The game uses a lot of very different ways of gameplay in order to progress through the game, most of them are ver good and original, but most of them are very annoying and frustrating, so in short, the gameplay is very mixed with good and bad moments.

      Graphics

The graphics look just like its previous game "Paper mario: the thousand year door", they are colorfull and charming at the same time (with a few exceptions...), but it has a different enviroment, where it's previous game had 3D environments and 2D characters, this game has mostly 2D enviroments, but the game can look 3D if you "flip" into the 3D enviroment.

      Music and sound

This is where the game is bad at doing, the music is pretty bland and not very memorable, most of them sound very mediocre and some of them are kind of decent, but not as good as the songs of other Paper mario games.

The sounds are pretty decent, but not enough to call them good, and as for the voice acting... there isn't any, there are just grumbles just like in any other nintendo game, the sound that you will only hear mostly in this game is the noise it makes when the text is being shown (but thankfully it doesn't sound too bad though...)

      Presentation

Continuing on the RPG elements, the main premise of the game is to collect 8 pure hearts in each chapter of the game, but the chapters are represented as doors to other dimensions in a town named flipside, in which is your main central-hub where you can buy items, speak to people, etc. It is also a place where you must place each pure heart into it's pedestal, in which they are hidden somewhere in town, in order to unlock a door to the next chapter, but it is really frustrating to do since some of them can take time in order to find them, other things included in the RPG elements are that mario has an heatlh meter where you can increase it by leveling up, mario can also use some items in order to heal him, but there are also some items that can increase his defence or attack, and where he can damage enemies, however these items must be activated by tilting the remote in a right order or by shaking it. One other thing I would like to mention is that the game also gives you the ability to switch main characters, where you can also play as peach, luigi and even bowser ! however they must be unlocked first in a certain chapter in order to play as one of them.

There's also a lot of things to do in the game to the point in which you don't have to worry about this game being short, for example there are things such as a secret bar in which you can play minigames by using the wii remote's capabilities, and there are also collectibles such as recipes in the town's kitchen, and cards where each of them have a character in them, which they are all fine since they are just optional, but the one activity that you will most spend the whole time in the game is backtracking, so get ready to do that a lot in this game ! and yes, the backtracking can be frustrating and boring and, for some parts, a waste of time...

      Overall

This is a Paper mario game that's mixed with both good and bad things in it, most people were very mixed with this game when it came out, some people hate it, but most people love it, and the question that you guys might be asking is: which side do I fit better ?

My answer is neither, since I have mixed feelings with this one so Im somewhere in between, so anyway if all the parts of this game on this game sound interesting to you and you don't mind the bad parts that I've mentioned, then go ahead and give this one a go, but if you don't like some of the things in this game and you're very indecisive with this one, then my recommendation is to rent it if you can, as for me this game gets...

      a 7/10

    • Mushroom Men: The Spore Wars (Wii) review by Jnes3

      Jnes3

A comet crashes to the Earth, raining down a strange green dust in its wake. The space dust is harmless to humans and goes unnoticed, but they failed to notice that flora, fauna and fungi including mushrooms, cacti, and kudzu gained sentience, and in order to survive, the newly conscious mushroom people soon formed into tribes, and war inevitably followed. Pax, a lone bolete mushroom who is trying to find his place in mushroom society, discovers a lepiota named Pester who plans to take over the world and now must stop him before it is too late.

      Story

The story has this little depth behind it that doesn't make this game seem bland, but the whole overall execution of how it is being told leaves it with some interest since the game mostly focuses more on the gameplay aspect, as for the story itself, it's decent.

      Gameplay

The game plays like a 3D platformer, your character pax can glide through the air, built weapons and can use a power called the "sporekinesis" as well as other abilities, you can use the power by just pointing the wii remote and then pointing it at only the objects that has a spore marking on them, so that then you can make a gesture to throw the object, but there are also other switches in which you can activate with the sporekinesis by pushing or moving them by moving the cursor to the designated area. And as for building weapons, you must collect a lot of certain items in order to convert them into said weapon, and by each time, you get to build a stronger weapon, and there are four types of weapons: slashing, bashing, thrusting, and radical. Even though there is not much of a difference between these, they do have some strenghts and they are useful, they're even of some importance in one level where you must eat him by having a certain weapon.

Even though the game sounds has an interesting concept, the game was not executed very well, since there are some problems residing in it wich makes the game tedious and frustrating, like for example: most of the game pretty much focuses on collecting items, and it can be a chore to do since some levels, while they are not very big, they are very complex and it is an obligation to backtrack almost the whole level, it can get very frustrating and boring for the most part, and it's also worse considering that the camera is not very helpfull if you want to throw an object while using sporekinesis or if you're in a very close area and it is also extremly sensitive to control ! and speaking of the controls, you can only attack by shaking the wii remote, while it is not very bad at some extent, it does become very redundant... and not to mention that there's a guard button in which, in my experience, is not very useful...

So the gameplay could've been a lot more better if it was polished well, but aside from that, the game is designed very well and the whole enviroment feels very atmospheric to the point in which it does feel like you're playing a tiny creature in a big world.

      Graphics

Im not going to lie, but the graphics feel a little dated, to the point in which the game looks like it came out during the very first release of the PS2, however it doesn't look too bad and the work very well and they are somewhat detailed for the most part, but another thing I want to mention is that the game has this weird dark tone behind it, since the game for the most part takes place at night or at a closed space, yes there are a few levels where it's daylight, but even those levels look kind of dark as well ! and another thing that I want to mention is that the game also has this gross enviroment as well where there are some disgusting things in the level, it is not very effective, but they do look kind of nasty to watch...

      Music and sound

While there are a few tunes that are catchy and a few that sound cool, the whole soundtrack is not very memorable but at least they sound very decent, however one thing I want to metion is that few of the songs were composed by someone named Les Claypool of "Primus" fame, which to be honest... I don't know who that is...

As for the sounds, they are okay, they're pretty simple and they get the job done, as for the voice acting... there isn't any, there are just grumbles when the characters speak, in which the text can also appear in other languages depending on what language do you speak.

      Presentation

The game is kind of short if you play games in one sitting but there are a lot replay value in the game included so that it won't be too short, for example: as I've said, most of the game focuses on collecting items, be it weapon parts, collectibles and meteor chunks, which they are spread throughout the entire levels and if you colect all of the meteor chunks, you will receive infinite ammo, and there's also a gallery menu where you can check out the soundtrack, some concept art in which you must unlock first by collecting them in the game, and there are also 5 minigames included ! but all of them range from decent to mediocre.

      Overall

Yeah, Im pretty mixed with this game, while the game is designed very well when talking about the enviroments and the desing, the gameplay however is pretty mediocre, and as for the other stuff you can do in the game, they don't really give me some sort of comfortability to keep playing it more, so if you're interested in this game, then give it a rent if you can, and if you don't then don't bother since you're not missing much, so overall this game gets...

      a 6/10

    • Battle Royale ! Kirby's Epic Yarn VS Kirby's Return to Dream Land

      Jnes3

Ever since the Wii launched, a lot of people have been hoping for Nintendo to release games for returning franchises, one of them being Kirby, while this franchise has got its fair share of games on portable systems, people however wanted Kirby to return to consoles, but then in late 2010, Kirby's Epic Yarn has been released ! the game received a lot of praise from critics and consumers alike ! while there are some people who didn't liked the whole different changes from the other Kirby games, it was still a highly praised game ! and then in late 2011, the pink puffball is back in Kirby's Return to Dream Land ! the difference being that this was developed by the original creators of the franchise that took them more than a decade to make ! going through different concepts, art style and even gameplay, the game was finally released ! however, a lot of consumers didn't gave it the same praise that Kirby's Epic Yarn got, while the some critics did praised it (somewhat...), the consumers really didn't gave its attention to this title since there was more "Big-Budgeted" titles to be released a month later of its release, but the question is, did Kirby's Return to Dream Land really deserved this reception ? even though it's a Kirby title with the classic formula that this franchise was always familiar with unlike Kirby's Epic Yarn ? and an even better question, which one of these recent console Kirby titles is better ? which one was more fun ? which one deserved it's praise it received ? which one of these mark as the amazing return of Kirby console games ? and since I haven't seen a discussion for this, in this article I'm going to put these two games together and see which one is better !

        VS

      Best Story

      VS

In Kirby's Epic Yarn, Kirby was just minding his own business in dreamland, and then he spots a metamato, and when he wanted to swallow it, a character appears by the name of Yin-Yarn, an evil sorcerer, telling kirby to stop trying to swallow the metamato, and when Kirby doesn't listen and swallows it, Yin-Yarn then banishes Kirby to Patch Land that's inside Yin-Yarn's sock, and Kirby sees that he's made out of yarn and when he wanted to help someone from trouble, he also realizes that his inhaling ability is also useless ! but as it turns out, he uses his new found powers that the metamato which was magical gave him, to save this certain character named Prince Fluff, and after saving him he explains that the evil Yin-Yarn has separated Patch Land into pieces, which was tied together by magic yarn, and so Kirby decides to help Prince Fluff to collect all seven pieces of the magic yarn and restore Patch Land.

The story in that game is REALLY simple ! but to be honest, it's a cutesy story that's charming and harmful for everyone to enjoy, in fact, it did had a plot twist that it was good ! and I admit, the story was really good in its own way and I did think that the game had very cute moments !

In Kirby's Return to Dream Land, when king dedede and waddle dee was chasing Kirby that was holding a cake, and metaknight just relaxing reading a book, a strange spaceship crashes on Pop Star and Kirby and his friends (Waddle Dee, King Dedede and Meta Knight) was looking at the ship, they've eventually found out that inside the spaceship is an alien creature named Magolor and he finds out that the ship was missing a lot of pieces and all of them are scattered around Pop Star, but Kirby and his friends are willing help him out to recover all of the pieces and fix the spaceship so that it can fly again.

Again, this had a simple story, however ! it did had more plot twists that really impressive, while one of them was clichéd, it was still not that predictable ! and it is also wrote in this whole "epic" tone behind it (ironic isn't it ?) ! while it did lacked more on it (since the game was more concentrated on the gameplay) the story was still good !

Comparing to these two, Kirby's Epic Yarn is pretty much the simplest of the two, while it has more cuter moments in that game, I felt that Kirby's Return to Dreamland was really more enjoyable than the other game, since it had more good plotwists, more epic moments, and the most overall well-made story, so Kirby's Return to Dream Land wins this category !

      WINNER:

      Kirby's Return to Dream Land

      Best Gameplay

      VS

Kirby's Epic Yarn (also known as Keito no Kirby in japan) is a plaformer game that only uses the Wii remote sideways. You are first put on Patch Land in order to select a world by just traversing through the land and then walk to the designated area or by teleporting right to it and then selecting a level by entering one of its doors, and in the levels, one of the main obvious differences in it'd gameplay is that Kirby doesn't have the ability to swallow or spit out enemies, instead, he can attack with a whip of yarn that can either destroy the enemy or grab them and turn them into projectiles, in which doing the latter can be essential to progress through the game, and you can do other moves such as turn into a parachute while on the air to glide down, turn into a car by tapping left or right twice to run faster, etc. and you can also find spheres called "Metamortex" in certain levels to transform into some object that can help you go through the game, be it a dolphin to swim on the water faster, a monster truck to race, etc. Kirby does not have health or extra lives, instead, you can lose beads that you collect, and collecting a certain amount of beads can give you a respective medal for that level. The game also includes two player co-op multiplayer where the second player is prince fluff and both of you can help each other collect beads, go through the levels, etc.

The gameplay in this game might be pretty simple, but it's also different from the other Kirby games since in this game it doesn't allow you to copy abilities in here, so the question is, does it work ? for me, it does, because even if it's not like the other Kirby games, it's still fun and enjoyable like a Kirby game would, while the game is too simple to the point it doesn't have to much depth into it and might be very slow paced to some people, I still give it some respect to take chances of being different and also be fun at the same time and not soil the Kirby name.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land (also known as "Kirby's Adventure Wii" in Europe and "Kirby of the Stars Wii" in Japan) is a 2.5D side-scrolling platform game in which it only uses the Wii remote sideways. The game starts you in the level select screen so that you can select which world to go and then which level to go in an area where you can run around and go through one of the doors that represents the levels. You play as Kirby, you can inhale indefinitely to suck in nearby objects and enemies, and the inhaled objects can either be propelled back out as projectiles or swallowed, however there are certain enemies that when swallowed Kirby will gain a copy ability, and it depends on what that certain enemy is, for example if Kirby swallows someone who has the ability of fire, Kirby will gain the ability of fire, and such, The game is pretty much a reminiscent of the traditional Kirby formula when it comes to gameplay, and there are some returning gameplay mechanics like each copy ability for example has multiple forms of attack that are summoned depending on the button-presses you are making, just like in Kirby Super Star for the SNES and a lot of copy abilities from other Kirby games such as the cutter, the tornado, the fighter, etc. and then there's also the "Super Abilities" which are a more powerful version of a copy ability, and the secondary task of collecting the missing starship pieces called "energy spheres", where some of them are hidden and some of them require you to do a certain task in order to collect it. This game also includes 4 player drop-in drop-out cooperative multiplayer where the second, third and fourth player have a choice of playing either as Meta Knight, King Dedede, and Waddle Dee or even another Kirby ! but sadly, only the first player can only play as Kirby and while in cooperative multiplayer, you can easily defeat enemies and bosses and do other things that you couldn't do in single player like for example the ability to be carried by someone playing in the game, someone carrying an object for you and more.

This game's gameplay is really fun ! it has a very reminiscent design of the other Kirby games that's been done in an amazing and enjoyable way ! it has tight controls, a fun multiplayer and fast paced gameplay too ! it's definitely a Kirby game that everyone can enjoy !

Comparing to these two, I definitely going to side with Kirby's Return to Dream Land, not that I hate Kirby's Epic Yarn mind you, it's just that Kirby's Return to Dream Land was more much fun to me for it's great, fast and enjoyable gameplay it offers that uses elements from other Kirby games and mixes it together to make a Kirby game with an amazing gameplay ! while I do give credit to Kirby's Epic Yarn for being fun and also being different, I still would have to go with Kirby's Return to Dream Land !

      WINNER:

      Kirby's Return to Dream Land

      Best Graphics

      VS

Kirby's Epic Yarn's graphics is mostly well known on how original and good looking it was back in E3 2010, in which gametrailers and gamespot named it as the game with best graphics when comparing with other big budgeted titles ! and the reason why is this, this game uses rendered graphics that shows a unique knitted design based on animated yarn and a world of cloth and textiles and it makes it very colorful and unique from other games released in that year, but not only that, the game also works its graphics style into the gameplay by creating an interaction between the game and its graphical style, for example Kirby can pull out some buttons from a certain scenery, and also some stray threads, zips and spin balls of yarn in order to reveal hidden areas or alter the shape of the terrain that can actually make you progress through the game.

While the game's graphics are charming and colorful just like any Kirby game should be, and it actually works since the game's gameplay is slow paced, you will have more attention to its graphics, however that said and done, they are not original, since I saw this kind of art style in Yoshi's Story for the Nintendo 64, but still, even if it's not original, it's still looks good if not for it's really simplistic look and lack of more depth into it.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land graphics were designed as a 3D model in a 2.5D setting, and each of the stages and it's background is very detailed whit things such as more colorful objects, cool looking lightning effects, and also some visual cues that certain background objects have that indicates which can be destroyed whit your Super Ability, and it also has the charm and colorful style that the Kirby games are always known for, but it also has its own kind-of dark setting and design, but it doesn't look out of place for a Kirby game.

To be completely honest, they look really good, while some stages look rather simple most of them have an amazing detail behind them with a lot of things that makes it look deep and even atmospheric at times ! but sadly most of your attention will be focused on the gameplay since it's fast paced unlike in Kirby's Epic Yarn, but still, the game is still pretty good looking with its great amount of detail behind it and its deep and atmospheric look it has !

So which one of these do I prefer the most when it comes to its graphics department ? well Kirby's Return to Dream Land of course ! it's just that I loved the amazing detail and depth that was put on this game while also be colorful just like any Kirby game should ! Kirby's Epic Yarn, while it is more charming and colorful, just looks too simple and lacks some depth into it, and I also disagree that its original, while some people think that Kirby's Return to Dream Land graphics look very generic, I still say that at least it's has an amazing details that makes it good looking and how it's a great-looking 2.5D Kirby game, therefore it gets my vote !

      WINNER:

      Kirby's Return to Dream Land

      Best Music and Sound

      VS

Kirby's Epic Yarn Soundtrack is composed by Tomoya Tomita, Hirokazu Ando and Jun Ishikawa, and it composes of a lot of variety in the style of music like orchestrated, tropical or even an instrument solo and so much more, my favorite songs from this game are Lava Landing, Big Bean Vine and Bubbly Clouds. The sounds are very simple and cutesy but it good nonetheless, it needed a little bit of impact in it though.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land Soundtrack is composed by Jun Ishikawa and Hirokazu Ando, and it also composes a lot of variety of styles such as a few orchestral scores and even a lot of songs have instruments that are reminiscent to the older Kirby games (more specifically Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards for the Nintendo 64 and Kirby's Dreamland 3 for the Super Nintendo), and my favorite songs from this soundtrack are Cookie Country, Boss Prelude, Cloudy Area. The sounds are also reminiscent from the old Kirby games of them being simple and they sound alike, but still, it felt that it needed more impact on it, but as it is, at least I can give credit where it's due.

This was hard for me to choose, but after much thought on this situation, I would definitely go to Kirby's Epic Yarn on this one ! the soundtrack in this game is just so amazing and it works as well ! this game being slow paced, it has more time of showing you the music therefore leaving more of an impact and attention to it unlike Kirby's Return to Dream Land, and the sounds also are more effective for this game as well, since Kirby's Epic Yarn is a simple and cutesy game, it is understandable to use cute and simple sounds, something that Kirby's Return to Dream Land doesn't do well since it's much more of an action focused game and the sounds lead more to be desired, and because of this, Kirby's Epic Yarn gets my vote for this category !

      WINNER:

      Kirby's Epic Yarn

      Best Presentation

      VS

Kirby's Epic Yarn's presentation, while it lacks in some certain areas, it actually works for this game, since one of the key features of this game is that there are some certain moments where you can actually interact with the environment, like pulling a button so that the environment changes to reveal another path, or destroy certain environments while you are transformed by a Metamortex object. and this is because the game was designed to be a world made out of fabric that can be used to knot or knit objects like yarn, buttons, cloth, etc. As for the replayability, each level in this game has three secret treasure chests for Kirby to find in order to get furniture which can then be used to customize Kirby's living space, and a cd in which it can be added in your music library to listen to, and there's also the medals that you can collect by getting a certain amount of beads in each represented level, and with the treasure chests and the medals you can unlock extra minigames by some characters that are also living in the hotel located in Patch square (where Kirby’s living space and a record that keeps track of your collectibles by percentages), in which these provide a hide and seek type of game, a race to the finish game, etc. and each minigame might get harder later on, and speaking of the living space, you can decorate it with wallpapers and furniture that you have collected or purchased at the store.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land does has some deep and atmospheric environments thanks to its graphics, even though they look like they're just there just for show, I kept in mind that this is a Kirby game so I didn't expected a whole lot, and it does has some charming moments just like any other Kirby game, but I felt like it lacked a little more of it, but that doesn't mean that it's bad or anything because of that, and it does give a great presentation to this version of Pop Star planet. As for the replayability, you can unlock a lot of thing in Magolor's spaceship such as some challenge rooms, copy abilities rooms, and some minigames that you can play with your friends as well depending on how much energy spheres that you have, there's also more content when you beat the main game like an Arena mode, a sound test and another main game called the Extra mode where it's the main game but harder, when you beat the extra mode, you can unlock the True Arena, a much harder version of the Arena mode, and beat both of these and you can actually play them again but with a different character like Meta Knight, King Dedede, and Waddle Dee, and lastly, complete both arenas and get 100% completion on Main and Extra game and you will unlock a special video that really wasn't that rewarding to be honest...

Now this was hard for me to pick ! both of these games left me with a great impression ! but after putting much more thought into it, I will have to say that Kirby's Epic Yarn gets this category ! now I know that Kirby's Return to Dream Land has more replayability, but it's just that Kirby's Epic Yarn's whole idea is to represent this world in a fabric land and you can also interact with it, it was done very well and does its job more respectively, while as I've said before, Kirby's Return to Dream Land whole setting feel like they're just there just for show, and not to mention, comparing to Kirby's Epic Yarn, Kirby's Return to Dream Land is very fast paced when it comes to gameplay and has a lot more content as well, but the thing is most of its great developed assets such as the graphics and the whole presentation might get ignored because of it, and it downgrades some of the cutesy nature and some of the charm in the environments that Kirby's Epic Yarn has included in its game, and because of this, Kirby's Epic Yarn gets my vote !

      WINNER:

      Kirby's Epic Yarn

      Overall Best Game !

So we've reached the end of the category, which means it's time to count the total votes to decide which of these games are better ! And the winner is...

KIRBY'S RETURN TO DREAM LAND !

      Score:
      Kirby's Epic Yarn - 2
      Kirby's Return to Dream Land - 3

While I do admire Kirby's Epic Yarn for it's well executed Presentation that works for this game and it's amazing soundtrack that's pretty much one of my best videogame soundtracks, Kirby's Return to Dream Land is just the greater game, and let's not forget that it took more than a decade for this to come out ! unlike Kirby's Epic Yarn where it wasn't a Kirby game at all in the beginning of its development ! and also, Kirby's Return to Dream Land, as I've said before, is like a love written letter for the older Kirby games in the franchise, since it has a kind of simple but great story, amazing and enjoyable gameplay and great and detailed graphic that all of them are reminiscent of the older Kirby games, therefore, in my opinion, I name Kirby's Return to Dream Land as the great return of the console Kirby games !

So what do you guys think ? Did you prefer the other game more ? or do you actually agree to my opinion ? Let me know in the comments !

    • Deadly Creatures (Wii) review by Jnes3

      Jnes3

Two creatures, one tarantula and one scorpion, are having a deadmatch againts each other, but many obstacles and other animals are interrupting their fight, be it insects, rats, reptiles and even humans...

      Story

The story, which setting is supposed to be in real life, is kind of unrealistic on how it is being told, but it is very interesting and keeps you being interested in it, but then the story gets kind of darker later on, but then the ending goes from darker to even more darker to the point in which is even disturbing to even think about it...

      Gameplay

The game plays like an action adventure game, you play as either the tarantula or the scorpion depending on what chapter are you playing, both of them can climb walls, but they have a very different style of play, for example the tarantula's abilities focuses more on exploration and the scorpions's abilities focuses more on combat, and both of them have different style of combat (the tarantula can shoot webs and the scorpion can guard, etc.), but some of their abilities like the scorpions digging and the tarantulas web shooting must be unlocked at certains parts of the game. In combat, you can attack other animals along your way by pressing the buttons and shaking the wii remote and nunchuck while also performing combos as well for extra damage, the whole shaking can be a little tedious while exploring, but thankfully it is not necessary in combat (but with a few exeptions...), as for the exploring, the levels are mixed with linear paths to open land depending on what chapter are you on, they are very well varied with obstacles and views and they are never bland, however, there are certain parts in which you must backtrack a few times, and it can get a little annoying.

However there might be a few glitches and bugs (no pun intended...) in the game like for example in a certain level where you don't know where to go so then you explore and then you end up falling down for no good reason, but these problems are not frequent and not too possible to perform... if you know what you're doing.

      Graphics

The graphics depend on what desing are we looking at, the enviroment looks great in some parts and in some other parts are ok but it gets the job done, the insects look really good and the other animals look kind of dated, but the humans do really look a little outdated but not by much.

      Music and sound

The music has this calm but creepy tone, it does work for some parts, but it is kind of over the top at times.

Even tough some insects are always quiet, they do make a sound in this game depending on their reactions, however they sound really unnatural and it looks like the sounds were forced to be put in, but as for the other animals such as the rats and the reptiles, they are ok. But one of the most important things about this game has to be the humans, they were not voiced by just some people, they were voiced by familiar hollywood actors Billy Bob Thornton and Dennis Hopper, and they are incredible in this game ! only if the game is in english, since the game can speak other languages as well and not just english.

      Presentation

The game is told in chapters and some of them progress through the tarntula's story and the other chapters progress through the scorpion's story, they are told with their point of view and both of them are progressed on what they are doing and there's one certain ocasion where their chapters will affect each other and it is pretty cool, but to bad it doesn't happen a lot of times, now what I liked more about the game is how well represented the enviroments are, complete with a camera pretty good positioned for a great point of view. As for replayability, there are some grubs spread on the entire levels in which you must collect (by eating them...) and when you collect a certain amount of grubs, some artwork can be unlocked in the extras menu, and there are also some leaf crickets in which you must collect in order to increase your creature's health meter.

So as you can see, there are a lot of creepy bugs in the game, and while they don't look too real, they still look kind of creepy, so if you're an arachnophobe, you might find this game very creepy.

      Overall

Deadly Creatures, while it may not hold you forever, is a pretty good playthrough that people should at least experience once, since the enviroment and the story, for the most part, is pretty interesting, but the gameplay could've been a little more better, so if this game sounds good to you or you somewhat like insects or creepy stuff, then go ahead and give it a go, but if any of this interests you just a little, then give this one a rent, maybe Im being too honest with this game, but for me this game gets...

      an 8/10

    • Wario Land: Shake it ! (Wii) review by Jnes3

      Jnes3

The shake dimension, a world within an ancient globe exhibited in a museum, is in trouble as the marauding pirate Shake king imprisons Queen Merelda and her merfle subjects and claims the legendary ?Bottomless Coin Sack?. Desiring the legendary treasure, female pirate captain syrup from the outside world steals the ancient globe and sends it to the only person who can save The shake dimension, and that person is... Wario ?!

      Story

So yeah, this story is pretty different from your typical wario land game, in which it has the same premise from the other games, but told in a very different way, the story from the beginning is really well told, however once it's pretty much told to you, the story doesn't get a lot of focus while in the playthrough, since it focuses more on the gameplay, but I can tell you this, the ending is pretty original and awesome ! it was very typical from your wario game and it pretty much doesn't ruin the game by a whole lot.

      Gameplay

If you played any wario land game, then these controls might be familiar to you, wario land shake it ! is a 2D platformer in which it only uses the wii remote sideways, wario can shoulder charge into enemies and can also butt stomp into a broken object, but he can also pick up an enemy in which it must be stunned and throw them at any direction depending on tilting the wii remote and also shake them by shaking the wii remote in order to take out an item (but most of them don't have an item), wario can also butt stomp into a high altitude and break into certain objects that are not destroyable by just normaly butt stomping it, he can also perform an Earthshake punch that stuns on-screen enemies and raises certain obstacles by shaking the wii remote if it's not holding any enemy, in which it has is own meter so you can't perform another if the meter isn't full yet.

The objective of all the levels is pretty simple easier said than done, in which at the end of the level there's an imprisoned merfle that you must release by grabing the cage and shake it by shaking the wii remote, however this will trigger an alarm and then later you must race back at the beginning of the level in a certain amount of time (but in the Subwarine levels is not applicable), the game does have a variety of things on each level, like there are some cannons in some levels you can use like for example a cannon that can launch you into another cannon aiming at it by tilting the wii remote and another one where where you enter it and then wario can run faster non-stop, and there's also some switches in which you must trigger them by trowing an enemy at it, but keep in mind though that not every enemy can't be picked up as you normally do if you don't stun it in a certain way, but the main focus of the game is to collect as much treasure as possible in order to progress through the game, generally done by finding sacks of money and shaking the coins out of them by shaking the wii remote, you need this money in order to buy a continent map in captain syrup's shop, and you can also buy other things such as recovery potions to recover his health, and life vessels to extend his maximum health, the whole game has some familiarity from the other wario land games and even though it's not similar, it works for the most part, but as you can see, the game does focus on shaking the wii remote a lot and it can get very tedious in every way.

      Graphics

The whole game is designed in an animated form in which it looks like an anime for children and it feels like you're playing a cartoon, and even the cutscenes look like an anime for children ! they may look simple in some areas, but for the most part it looks really amazing and the animations are pretty flawless too !

      Music and sound

The music is pretty well done, there are some songs in which are very simple and not that amazing, but there are other songs in which they are so good that they are catchy ! so the overall soundtrack is pretty mixed with simple and awesome songs in there.

The sounds are very cartoonish in some way and very simple as you can get, it gets the job done but they sound kind of "meh...", but as I've said before, the game does includes cutscenes (but they are only in the beginning and at the end of the game sadly), but they don't have any voices in them, the characters just grumble just like in any other nintendo game, but they sound kind of decent though and wario can say something at the start of a level ("yeh ! let's a go !"), instead of voices, the cutscenes have subtitles on what the characters are saying depending on what language you speak.

      Presentation

The whole game (also known as "Wario Land: The Shake Dimension" in europe) takes place in a menu (in which wario shakes his butt in front of you ! D: ) where you can select which level do you want to go to, and you can also check out what treasures you just collected and a media room in which you can listen to a song in the level, but there's this weird "achievement" system called misions in which you must do a certain thing in a level in order to achieve it, and if you do them all in a certain level, you will unlock it's song in the media room, to some people, the game can be a little short, because there are 7 continents in total, and 5 of them have 4 main levels and a boss level, however there are 2-3 hidden levels in a continent in which you can unlock by finding a secret map by earthshake punch a certain sparkling area in a certaint main level (in which the game will tell you what level has one if you beat the game once), and that's another thing that this game relies on too, the secrets, the game has hidden levels, hidden treasures (in which are collectible) and hidden areas in where it has a big sack of money or a diamond in which is a high amount of money ! and if you do all of the misions of every level, you can get the final song unlocked in media room, and if you get all the treasures as well, you can gain a gold decor and throne in wario's room, so there is a lot of replay value to be found in this game, but I find most them to be very frustrating to find them, and it is kind of annoying on how the treasures don't do anything unlike in wario land 3, and the game can get unfairly challenging in certain areas (specially in the bosses !).

      Overall

Even though the game was good, I find it to be very frustrating and unfairly challenging in some certain areas, like the whole shaking mechanic and the secret findings, however if you like these type of games and you don't mind the whole secret finding, then this game is for you, but if you don't like the idea of the whole shaking thing, then give this a rent if possible, as for me this game gets...

      a 7/10

    • Bully: Scholarship Edition (Wii) review by Jnes3

      Jnes3

James "Jimmy" Hopkins arrives at Bullworth academy after his mom and new stepfather drop him off while they prepare for their honeymoon, but in order to fit in, Jimmy must earn each student group's respect while "keeping his nose clean" at the same time.

      Story

For a story about bullyism (if that's even a word), the story is pretty well done ! well ok, the whole story is pretty over the top and can even get a little unrealistic, but the story is represented that way because it's main focus is to be humorous, and the game does bring some good humor !... but the humor really focuses on the whole being mean to someone or in other words "Bullying", but even if you're offended by those type of things, it's still very humorous because none of this is meant to be taken seriously, and because this is from the same studio that also made the Grand Theft Auto games...

      Gameplay

Bully: Scholaship Edition is a sanbox game that plays kind of similar to Grand Theft Auto, but not by much since you can't steal people's cars and focuses more on the teenager stuff rather than the mature ones found in Grand Theft Auto, however at the start of the game, you are limited to go to the city since there are sections where the roads are blocked and they can be unlocked if you've done a certain main mission, and even though there are cops as well, the shool does have prefects and if these prefects caught you doing something unusual like violence against girls, smaller kids, etc., they will chase you (which you can also escape from them) and if you get caught (which you can also shake away from them), you will go to detention, you will also get busted by the teachers and even some townspeople if you're in the city, and if this happens, the mission Jimmy was doing will be a failure, and most of Jimmy's weapons are confiscated.

The game requires the wii remote and nunchuck controls, throughout the game, you will unlock different weapons such as a slingshot, eggs, stinkbombs, firecrackers, you know, "prank items", you can use this items by just throwing them or lock on to someone and throw it at them or by using the scope and you can aim to where do you want to throw, but ther thing is, you can't move the cursor, it always stays on the center and the only thing you can do is move around the wii pointer and that way the cursor in the center can move, and it can move through different speeds depending on how far is the wii remote pointer at the edge of the screen, but since there is no cursor to indicate where the wii remote pointer is, it can be a little frustrating to control, but on the positive note, you can also punch by selecting your fists as a weapon and then shake the wii remote and nunchuck in order to emote each punch, and you can even learn some combos and special moves later on, and unlike most games, the shaking feels very natural and responsive as well, and such the controls
      overall are fine.

But the game also relies on minigames as well, since you're in school, the classes you take are played like a minigame and can be broken into five levels of increasing difficulty, and if you and if you complete them in a certain range, not only will you get a good grade, but it will also benefit you on the gameplay, like for example in Chemistry is a "quick time event" minigame (and a very good one mind you), and if Jimmy does well, he gains the ability to create firecrackers, stink bombs, and other items at his chemistry set in his room at the dorm, and another example is the Shop classes, if you do the minigame correctly, Jimmy can build increasingly high-performance BMX bikes, and use them in either races or a bike park. There is also minigames in the city where you can win money as well so you can buy a lot of things such as items, something out of a machine like a soda or an arcade machine and even change Jimmy's physical appearance to your liking by purchasing new clothes, haircuts, masks, or even tattoos. And there's also a carnival that has minigames as well, and based on your performance, you will win some tickets so that you can buy other things in the gift shop.

There's also even multiplayer included in the game, but sadly you can only play the classes minigames rather than playing coop in the main story, but even so, I find the multiplayer to be very fun and competitive, so no gripes there.

So there's that and so much more to do in the game, but Im afraid I can't list them all in here since this is just review and not a novel , so yeah, this game is pretty fun and had a great time playing this game.

      Graphics

They look ok and they can get the job done, but it could've been a lot more better, I mean the character desings are fine, but the whole backgrounds and everything have this kind of a pale-ish color that makes this game look somewhat muddy, even though it will not affect your gameplay aspects, you can't help it to feel like it should've been more, if not, a little better.

      Music and Sound

There are two songs that are very catchy and good that meakes them very memorable, but as for the rest, some of them are ok, and some of them are just decent.

The sounds are very good too, they do an amazing job on how a thing should sound like, and even though some sounds kind of hear unrealistic, the majority still does a great job. And as for the voice acting, there is a lot of voice actors where they each represent a person, and they all sound amazing ! the students sound very natural, the teachers sound just how they are represented, and other people do a good job as well, but the game is english only, so you will only find your other language on the subtitles.

      Presentation

Wow... where do I start ? ok so, let me get this out of the way first, this game was originally for the PS2 simply called "Bully" and "Canis Canem Edit" in PAL releases (... for some reason...), and this game is the "Scholarship Edition", which includes 8 new missions, 4 new characters, 4 new school classes (Biology, Music, Math and Geography) and new unlockable items and clothing.

The game's enviroment takes place in a fictional town where it's supposed to take place somewhere in the New England area of the United States, the town is split into four separate boroughs including the school, be it the town, some factories, the slums, and much more, however the whole place feels a little small, but it is very convincing that it is a city since the interactions with the students, the teachers, the adults and others all feel very natural and not that awkward at all.

Aside form that, there is a lot to do in the game, be it a lot of collectibles in which you can unlock some things if you collect them all, the minigames, and even when you finish it, the game still continues in which you can do whatever you want ! so yes, the game does have a lot of replayability and it can get a lot of time in order to complete this game in 100%.

      Overall

This is a great fun game ! I really enjoyed the whole game and I felt that there wasn't any gripe included into it, and if they where, they were easily gotten used to because of the fun gameplay, the interesting story, the amount of things to do in the game and so much more ! so don't hesitate on this game, if you can find it, then go ahead and pick it up ! Hopefully you won't regret your purchase ! and as for me this game gets...

    • Jnes3 is back !... sort of...

      Jnes3

Ok, I know a lot of you guys might be asking this "who am I ? and why should I care ?", well I'm Jnes3 (obviously) and because I was in some sort of hiatus... but why am I saying that I was in here before since almost all of you don't know who I am ?

Because believe it or not, I've actually registered into this site back in 2009, since I was seeing this site's content since 2007 it was that year (2009) where I decided to register and become a g1 like you guys, I've posted an introduction blog, stating that I was going to post some blogs and all of that stuff... but I never got around to do it, I mean sure I've posted some comments in some blogs made by other g1s, but I never posted a blog  in here like I said I was going to do, and I also stopped posting comments altogether. And if you care, there were three reasons why:

1.- Because I was rather busy and didn't had the time.

2.- Because I didn't knew what to write in my blog.

3.- Because of a few problems.

Well, why did I decided to come back after all this time ? well... this may sound myself as an anti-g1, but it was because of a favor.

You see, months ago, I've joined a small independent website called Wiiware Wave and they've accepted me as part of the staff as a videogame reviewer, and since then, they still love my work and I'm also doing some new things on that site as well.

But the thing is, there isn't a whole lot of visitors in that site, and the owner asked all of the staff to try to invite some people in that site, and of course, my only idea was to get back into this website, and try to get you guys interested into our site, and to do this, I can post my reviews as well as articles from our site to this one.

Now, before everyone calls me a "fake" g1 and that I'm only here to just post from another website, I've sent a permission to screwattack (specifically Bryan) asking them if they would let me do this and they were fine with it, and I'm also going to post a few comments on your blogs, videos, etc. just like I used to do back then... If I have the time to do so that is...

But one thing I will definitely reply to and come back to the site for is your comments in my reviews and articles, since I want to see if I can improve my reviewing, my way of bloging and such things, I know there are a lot of people who love my reviews and such, but I want to hear from you guys as well !

If you still think that I'm awful because I will be  posting reviews and articles from another site... well at least I asked permission and told you I will be doing it instead of just come out of nowhere in the blog section screaming "JOIN THAT SITE !!!!!" like a spambot...

But anyway, it's good to be back ! look for my reviews as well as other stuff soon !

    • Battle Royale ! Super Mario Galaxy VS Super Mario Galaxy 2

      Jnes3

Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 are one of the most well received and greatly praised games for the Nintendo Wii, the games that pretty much critics and fans loved so much in fact that they are actually one of the all-time best reviewed games in gamerankings and metacritic, and for good reason ! in my opinion these games were really fun, enjoyable, it pretty much became one of my favorite games of not only in their respective years, but maybe in all of my time as a gamer ! but since these games have been both highly praised, there was one question that really had me stuck once the sequel came out... which one of these games are better ? which one of these is actually better than the other ? which one had left me a with better impression ? I've haven't seen someone make a decision about it, so in this article I’m going to look at both Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 and see which one is better !

               VS

      Best Story

      VS

In Super Mario Galaxy, Mario is invited to the centennial Star Festival by Princess Peach to celebrate the comet that passes overhead every one hundred years, but then when mario was getting closer to the castle, Bowser invades the Mushroom Kingdom with a surprise attack in a fleet of airships, then they summon a giant flying saucer, Peach's entire castle is removed from the ground and it is lifted into outer space (ok is it me, or am I getting a Paper Mario vibe from this ?), and then Mario gets thrown off to across the cosmos. Then he awakens on a small planet and later on he meets Rosalina and her companion stars, the Lumas, is a watcher of the stars, who uses the Comet Observatory to travel across the universe, however Rosalina wants Mario's help in order to go to a journey across the universe to reclaim the Power Stars that all have been stolen by Bowser and restore power to Rosalina's observatory in order to help him rescue Princess Peach.
The story in this game is really amazing ! it had a great beginning and an epic ending ! sure, the gameplay was the main focus of this game and there isn't a whole lot going on throughout the game, but hey it's a Mario game, and the gameplay was enjoyable enough so I didn't expected much.

In Super Mario Galaxy 2, Princess Peach invites Mario to share some cake at the Star Festival, a time when Star Bits rain down from the skies over the Mushroom Kingdom, however on his way, Mario finds a Luma, who immediately befriends him and grants him the ability to spin, shortly thereafter when Mario almost arrives at the castle Bowser, who has grown to an immense size (after swallowing Grand Stars... somehow), is there and attacks Princess Peach's castle, kidnaps the princess and escapes into outer space in order to recreate his empire at the center of the universe. After launching into outer space with the help of a Luma, Mario later on meets a crafty Luma mechanic called Lubba in a broken mobile planetoid ship piloted by other Lumas, and Mario accepts Lubba's help to retrieve the power stars in order to make the ship better, so Mario is given control of Starship Mario, which it has now transformed in the shape of his head, and goes into his mission to fly across the universe in pursuit of Bowser and the Princess and to help Lubba find the lost Lumas that were part of Bowser's evil scheme.
... Ok, I need to say this now, but this story wasn't very good to be honest, not only because the first one was better, but because this story is not that interesting, the beginning was ok, but the ending gave me the feeling that it lacked something, sure it was charming, but when you go from Super Mario Galaxy's story from this, I ended up being disappointed.

And another thing is that Super Mario Galaxy 2's story is exactly like the first game ! It's just the first game just with different side characters ! I really thought that the sequel's story could've been different or maybe even improved a little. The first game's story really left me with a great impression unlike the sequel, so that means the first game gets my vote !

      WINNER:

      Super Mario Galaxy

      Best Gameplay

      VS

Super Mario Galaxy is a 3D Platformer that only uses the Wii Remote and Nunchuk. The main hub is the Comet Observatory in which contains six domes where they can provide some galaxies that you can enter and then select a mission in order to collect a Power Star, by either completing the mission or by defeating a boss. But one of the most unique gameplay mechanic this game has included a new physics system that makes each celestial object to have its own gravitational force, allowing you to completely circumnavigate rounded or irregular planetoids, walking sideways or upside down, there are still some areas where you can usually jump from one independent object and jump towards another one nearby, and there are also several areas in the game in which the movements are restricted to a 2D plane, which is reminiscent to the 2D Mario games. But not only that, there are also some new powerups other than the fire flower and the rainbow star, such as a bee, where you can fly for a limited time, a boo, where you can transform into a boo and be transparent, and others ! and finally there's also co-op multiplayer ! but sadly, it's just a second star pointer that can only gather Star Bits and shoot them at enemies, it can also make mario jump and stops some enemies by holding them with the A button...
The game is really fun ! each galaxy contains a number of planets and other space matter for the you to explore, so there's some variety in the game while you are progressing ! one of the things that I didn't liked though is the whole "Prankster Comets" concept, where every once in a while a comet is going to appear in a galaxy and if you enter that galaxy, you will see that this is the same level, but with a special challenge that you can earn an extra power star, like replay an episode within a varying time limit, complete the objective without being damaged once, etc. but the problem is that you don't know when the comets are going to appear, in which it can be annoying if you want to collect all of the stars, and the multiplayer was kind of disappointing, but as it is, the game is still really fun despite it's flaws !

Super Mario Galaxy 2 is a 3D Platformer that only uses the Wii Remote and Nunchuk. it's pretty much like the first game, but this time with a whole new features ! instead of being in a Comet Observatory, you can choose a galaxy by being on a map select screen kind of like in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, where you must collect a certain amount of power stars and star bits in order to go further in the map, there are also new galaxies, new powerups such as the Spin Drill, which allows you to burrow through some planets and emerge out the other side, Rock Mario, which allows you to smash through obstacles, such as boulders and enemies, and others, and let's not forget about the inclusion of Yoshi ! even though he's in some certain levels, yoshi changes the gameplay where your Star Pointer is replaced by a red dot which allows you to point at various objects and manipulate them with Yoshi's tongue meaning you can use his tongue to swing across gaps, pull levers, and swallow enemies. But not only that, he even has its own powerups ! like the Dash Pepper, that allows Yoshi to run quickly, giving him the ability to run up walls and run on water, and lastly to mention is the Cosmic Guide, similar to the New Super Mario Bros. Wii's "Super Guide" feature, the Cosmic Guide appears (in which it looks like Rosalina !) if you have failed during a level a certain number of times, and with this it can allow the game control Mario for you in order to complete the level, but the problem is you will only be awarded a Bronze Star, which means that you must complete the level without using the Cosmic Guide in order to earn a Golden Power Star.
This game is also fun, and there is some great variety of new concepts in the game that not only makes it different from the first game, but also improve it ! like for example whole Prankster Comets concept is still there, but instead of waiting for a comet, there are these coins called the Comet Medals where when you collect one, a comet will appear in a galaxy. The multiplayer is also kind of improved, this time the second player controls an orange Luma, it's still like the first game, but this time the second player can also can also physically attack enemies and collect items and power-ups.

Both games are fun in its own right, but Super Mario Galaxy 2 has some improvements over to the original, in which were a few flaws and it also included new things in the game as well, not to mention that the game is also harder than the first one, meaning it can appeal to everyone in which include casual gamers and hardcore gamers, and to me gameplay is best when it wants to appeal to everybody so my vote goes to Super Mario Galaxy 2 !

      WINNER:

      Super Mario Galaxy 2

      Best Graphics

      VS

This... is going to be difficult to do, both games do look similar when it comes to the graphics, so in order to determine the winner of this category, I’m going to have to go very deep into these games...

Ok so, in order to determine which one has better graphics, I've made a subcategory in order to determine each and every one of the details that these games have put together, in which they are:

Water - both of them look the same, but in the sequel I've noticed that the details were a little more improved due to how good looking they were.

Fire - the first game didn't looked too bad, but the sequel had more color and more vibrant.

Metal - the sequel actually had an improved lightning effect than the first one, just very slightly though.

Character Models - they look the same, sure, but in the sequel they've actually slightly improved the details and the lightning effect to them.

Background pictures - plenty of them were blue skies, but I thought that the sequel were prettier and cool looking

Lightning effect - again even though the first game had a few amazing ones, the sequel actually improved it by making it a little more frequent

Allright then ! so that means that the sequel gets this vote !

      WINNER:

       Super Mario Galaxy 2

      Best Music and Sound

      VS

Super Mario Galaxy's soundtrack, by Mahito Yokota and Koji Kondo, mostly includes orchestral music and also remixed songs from other games such as Super Mario Bros. 3, the most favorite songs from the soundtrack according from a lot of people were Good Egg Galaxy, Gusty Garden Galaxy and Melty Molten Galaxy. However my personal favorite ones are Purple Comet, Rosalina's Comet Observatory and bunny chasing.

Super Mario Galaxy 2's soundtrack, by Mahito Yokota, Ryo Nagamatsu, and Koji Kondo, also includes mostly orchestral music but it also has some variety of songs in it as well, like one that song that sounds kind of country folk-ish, one that sounds like jazz, etc. but it does a good work at making them fit into a space style setting, the most favorite songs from the soundtrack according from a lot of people were Nostalgic Fortress and Puzzle Plank Galaxy, my personal favorites however are Bowser's Galaxy Generator, Final Boss Battle and Starship Mario 1.

Both of these soundtrack are amazing and memorable as well, I had a hard time picking my winner for this one, but the more I think about it, Super Mario Galaxy 2's soundtrack not only includes more really good songs, but there are also some songs from the first game as well ! so that means that Super Mario Galaxy 2's soundtrack gets my vote for having more good songs which are also from the first game !

      WINNER:

      Super Mario Galaxy 2

      Best Presentation

      VS

Super Mario Galaxy is set in an outer space environment, where it focuses on going from planet to planet with its own gravitational force, and some levels can change the tone of the game, but it still has that family friendly tone that the mario games are known for, and again it's still does a very good job at it. The way the Comet Observatory is presented is really great and maybe even beautiful, the way the Lumas are there and some of them moving around, the way the domes were presented, it felt like a unique experience that was relaxing and amazing. And as for replayability, you can collect all of the 120 stars that are in the game... but you can also collect 120 stars as luigi as well if you collected all of the stars as mario (and a secret level...) ! and maybe collect as many coins and star bits as you can in each level.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 setting and tones are also the same as with the first game, but without the Comet Observatory, instead it's the mario ship you're in, it's setting is pretty good though, with a calm and great environment with the characters that you can meet through the game in there and such, but the way you can use the ship is through a map select screen, instead of exploring the domes in the first game. As for the replayability, there's a lot to do ! there's 242 stars this time ! unlock a secret world by beating the game once and the green stars challenge if you complete the game but with 120 stars, and much more !

Super Mario Galaxy's presentation is actually better that the sequel, but the sequel has more content in terms of replayability, but if I had to pick just one of these, then I guess I'll have to go with the first game, since I feel like it left me with a great impression with its presentation when compared to the sequel, and don't get me wrong there is nothing wrong with the sequel, it's just that I liked the first game more, despite its lack of content when talking about replayability, so in the end, the first game gets my vote !

      WINNER:

      Super Mario Galaxy

      Overall Best Game !

So we've reached the end of the category, which means it's time to count the total votes to decide which of these games are better ! And the winner is...

      SUPER MARIO GALAXY 2 !

      Score:
      Super Mario Galaxy - 2
      Super Mario Galaxy 2 - 3

Even though Super Mario Galaxy did an amazing job at creating a good atmosphere and keeping a good tone and setting, Super Mario Galaxy 2 does a better job at having great gameplay and content that everyone can enjoy, an amazing and varied soundtrack and (very slightly) better graphics ! To be honest, I kind of feel bad for the first game to lose, but I guess I can give a lot of respect for the sequel too.

    • Klonoa (Wii) review by Jnes3

      Jnes3

Follow Klonoa and Hewpoe on an adventure to stop Ghadius from turning Phantomile, the land of the dreams, into a world of nightmares !

      Story

The story is very traditionally great, it starts out very charming and interesting just like in any good adventure game, but then later on it gets a little darker for a type of game like this, and not to mention that the ending is kind of sad too.

      Gameplay

Klonoa plays just like a 2D platformer, the controls are very different from any other platformers I've played, however they're simple to control too, you use klonoa's weapon which is a ring called the "wind bullet" in order to grab enemies so that you can throw them at other enemies or jump on them on mid-air to do a double jump, there's also a "whirlwind" move you can do, but to be honest, I really don't know what it does or what is the purpose of it...

The game is a traditional platformer but with a really interesting design, since it has items which you must open by tossing at it with an enemy, like and egg, or a clock which is a checkpoint, or a creature which multiplies the gems you collect by 2x for a short amount of time, and there are also prisoners which are collectible throughout the game which you can unlock a bonus if you collect them all, and later on in the game it includes platformer-based puzzles in order to progress in the game, the gameplay is very interesting and it is fun to play ! and it also supports any type of controller you have, be it the wii remote sideways, with the nunchuck, with the classic controller or even the gamecube controller !

      Graphics

The game is designed in a 2.5D world and, for the most part, looks really great and colorful ! even though some areas look a little aged, the game still looks very appropriate for it's type, and you can even sometimes reach items from the environment around you like it feels like a 3D game !

      Music and Sound

The music, even though it's not memorable, it's really good ! most levels have their own music, some of them actually don't represent the level, but it's not that bothersome even though that's what makes it not memorable.

The sounds are cutesy and simple, but appropriate for a game like this, and there's also voice acting in the game ! depending on where what language do you speak (English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, etc.), I thought that the voice acting was really good, but I can see that some people might not like it since the voice acting sounds cheesy and cutesy like it came from a children's cartoon, BUT ! there's also an option which you can change the language to "Phantomile", which is the original language for klonoa, where the characters grumble and don't speak... however I do like the voice acting better though.

      Presentation

Klonoa is actually a remake from a playstation game called "Klonoa: Door to Phantomile", however I haven't played that one so I can't compare this for the other. So even though the game sounds good, there is a problem with it: it's too short, since the game has only 13 levels (14 if you count the extra level), later on the levels gets longer, but not by much if you play games in one sitting, but there are some extras unlocked once you beat the game which are costumes, a time attack, a movie viewer, a character viewer, a mirror mode and an extra level in which you must free all prisoners in the game in order to unlock this level and once you beat the extra level you will get a jukebox, and you can also try to collect all the gems in all levels (good luck with that if you're trying to do that...).

      Overall

The game is very good and fun for a platformer fan like me, however the game is too short and if you don't like those type games but if you like platformers, give this a rent if possible, but if any of this interests you and don't mind short games, then go ahead and buy this, as for me, this game gets...

      an 8/10

    • Star Fox 64 (N64) review by Jnes3

      Jnes3

Andross has declared war on the whole Lylat System ! and it's up to the Star Fox team, consisting of members Fox Mcloud, Peppy Hare, Falco Lombardi and Slippy Toad, to stop him !

      Story

Believe it or not, the story in this game is really good ! ok fine, the game actually focuses more on the gameplay, but sometimes the story mixes with the gameplay in some sections of the game and, to be honest, it does an amazing job while doing so ! however, you will not get the "true" story in a first playthrough, since you must do certain things in the game in order for the game to tell you the true version of the story, but once you do, it really is very good !

      Gameplay

Star Fox 64 is an arcade shmup (shoot em' up) game, but instead of being 2D, the game progresses through this "Corridor Mode," which forces your air craft vehicle named "Arwing" down a fixed path straight forward through the environment, you can maneuver around the screen to move and you can also go fast and slow down, but you can't stop no matter what you do, pretty much just like in the original Star Fox for the SNES, but the game also includes an "All-Range Mode" in some stages of the game and also some bosses, where you can fly freely in a fairly large map in order to engage in a big combat.

The main point of the game is to go from point A to point B while shooting up a lot of enemies on your way, but also trying to survive as well ! even though the game sound too simple, it has a lot of variety included in the gameplay mechanics ! like for example there's the arwing you control, you not only you can just move it around, but you can do a lot of things with it while flying, you can charge up your laser in order to shoot a powerfull lock-on laser, you can also somersault to evade enemies from behind you and you can also do a barrel roll in which you do a spinning maneuver which is capable of deflecting enemy fire. Another example in the variety of the game's gameplay mechanics is that you can also control a tank called the "Landmaster" which kind of controls just like the Arwing, but it's has a few different features, like you're on the ground instead of the air and you can hover to evade obstacles, but sadly the tank is only available on two levels, there's also a submarine in the game named "The Blue Marine", but that is only available in just one certain level...

One of the things that include in the gameplay is powerups, you can find some powerups while shooting a certain group or just one enemy or by just picking them up from a certain spot, such powerups are the shield rings, which the silver ones can cure your ships damage and the gold ones can upgrade your ship's health meter if you collect 3 of them, Smartbombs, which can blow up in an area where you are pointing with a press of a button, and the laser upgrades, which can upgrade your laser's attack power where there's only 3 levels of powering it up. Another thing to mention is that the game has many branch out levels where you choose two paths or even three, but to do this, you must first accomplish a certain task or destroy a certain boss, but be carefull, once you took an alternate path and gone straight to another alternate level, the game can get more difficult depending on which path you took.

And finally, the game also supports multiplayer up to four players simultaneously ! There are three modes of multiplayer play: "Point match" in which you must shoot down a certain number of times to an opponent to win, a "Battle royal" which is pretty much just like a "last man stand" match where the last player not shot down wins, and a time trial where you destroy enemy fighters, you can also unlock other vehicles as well, but you must obtain a certain amount of medals in order to unlock them, but I will get to that later on...

The game is fun, but it can get a little tiresome later on, since even though the game has a lot of variety in the gameplay, it does get a little repetitive and not to mention that the game gets a little difficult as well, but since this is a shmup, I guess I cannot say anything bad about that.

      Graphics

Well, for being a game released a year after the Nintendo 64 has been released, they do look really good ! nowadays, there are some parts that haven't aged well, but the character models look decent and the little animation box when they are talking still look good, and as for the whole, the game still looks good to be honest.

      Music and Sound

The soundtrack in this game sound good ! some songs are actually memorable and some are not but they were close ! they really fit the mood in the game in a certain situation and they do it very well for the most part !

The sounds are very good too but good as in "Action-packed" good, the lasers do the classic "pew pew !" sound and the "kaboom !" sound is really awesome too ! but, strangely, there are some parts of the game where there's no sound, even where there should be ! so I don't know what happened there... and as for the voice acting, well I'll be ! there is some actual voice acting in this game ! in fact, I think this is one of those early Nintendo 64 games to have actual voice acting in them ! and even though the voice quality is not very good, the acting in each character are very good !

      Presentation

From what I've read, the game (which is also named "Lylat Wars" in Europe) is actually a reboot to the original Star Fox for the SNES, but since I haven't played that game yet, I really don't know the difference so... and another unique thing this game has is the ability to include a "rumble" feature on the original Nintendo 64 controller, since the game included a rumble pack in the packaging for the Nintendo 64 controller ! but, for some odd reason, there is no rumble feature on the VC version ! well, maybe nintendo has done this because the classic controller didn't really had a rumble feature... but what about the gamecube controller ?! that one is compatible too ! but meh, whatever...

One unique thing that this game includes is the ability to see your teammates too ! unlike a lot of shmups, you can actually see your teammates what they are doing, they even request for help if they are in trouble just to help them take down an enemy behind them... and that's it... and you can also switch into first person view by pressing a button, and the first person view is pretty much looking from the cockpit of the Arwing ship, so the game does a great job to immerse you into the game as a pilot of an airship, and that's something you just have to give kudos for.

And as for the replayability, even though the main game is really short (as in you can easly beat it in an hour or so), there is still a lot of stuff to do in the game ! like I've said, the game has many branch out levels where you choose two paths or even three, so that you can replay the game again and do a certain task this time in order to get to the "true" story of the game, another thing this game also includes are medals, where you can collect them by just destroying a certain amount of enemies in a level, and by doing so, you can unlock some things incluiding the Landmaster tank in multiplayer mode, and "expert" mode if you collect them all, and that mode has it's own medals too ! so there is a lot of stuff to do in the game, and while some of them are rewarding, most of them are pretty challenging for doing them, so if you want to try to do some of them, then good luck to you !

      Overall

I found this game to be fun, the gameplay was good but a little tiresome, the story is very good, and the voice acting was a very nice addition ! but sadly, if you're one of those people who only play the main story and get satisfied with it, maybe you should skip this game, since there is no rent option on the VC, but if you like a good shmup game with a lot of replay value, which some of them are very difficult to do them, then go ahead and buy this ! and as for me, this game gets...

      an 8/10
